San Marin Cheer Third Annual Pasta Feed Banquet

San Marin Cheer will be holding the Third Annual Pasta Feed Banquet at Margaret Todd Center from 6-9PM, Friday, November 21st.
The cost is $20 for general admission/adults, and $10 for students/teachers/children.
Cost of admission includes salad, pasta, garlic bread, dessert and sodas.
There will be a no-host bar, cake auction, silent auction, raffle and of course performances by our cheer and dance team. Proceeds will go toward Cheer competition expenses and buying our mats.
Tickets can be purchased from the Front Office as well as any of the San Marin cheerleaders.
 San Marin Cheer won 1st place for the X-treme routine (a routine learned at camp), a unanimous superior for all of our superior evaluations and performances, and a most improved award for our JV team.
The team was invited to perform at the pro-bowl in Hawaii and 4 cheerleaders made All-Stars. They are Danielle Carlos, Grace Waters, Joyce Cabrera and Kaitlyn Leonard. They are invited to perform in the London New Year's Day Parade.

Madrigal Feast at San Marin - December 5, 6, 7
 At San Marin High School, where home economics is no longer a part of the curriculum, music students recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop to make their costumes for The Madrigal Feast which will be held Dec. 5, 6 & 7.
Students learned to cut patterns, iron their fabric and use a sewing machine - with the help of several music parents. Some students made their entire costume on the day of the workshop!
The Madrigal Fea st is an evening of feasting and medieval entertainment and takes place in the Emily Gates Student Center, which will be transformed to resemble an old English castle. Students - dressed in period costume and using the dialect of the period - serve a meal, entertain the guests and perform an original play. The night ends with a choral concert.
Reservations for the evening must be made in advance. San Marin music students have reservation forms or you may also pick one up in the school office. Reservations are accepted by mail only. The $25 ticket includes Wassail, chicken or vegetarian dinner, and flaming pudding - along with two hours of non-stop entertainment!

 AERIES GRADING SYSTEM REMINDER
Please note that teachers(*) update their electronic grade book weekly, therefore when you view your student's grade, it may not yet reflect work that your child has most recently turned in.
If you are concerned about your student's grade in a class where it appears the grade book is not being updated regularly, then it is appropriate to follow up with the teacher.
Additionally, we are in the process of recording progress grades, which will be mailed home at the end of next week. During this time you may not be able to view grade books, until the grading window for teachers close on Wednesday November 12th. You should be able to resume access to your student's grades on Thursday November 13th.
(*) Note: Not all teachers are using the grade book now; but will be after the start of the second semester.

 SAN MARIN STUDENTS AWARDED AP SCHOLARS STATUS

The AP Board honored 43 San Marin students as AP Scholars in September for their outstanding scores on last year's AP exams.
In addition to the 20 San Marin students who received grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams, 2 received a national scholar award for earning an average grade of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams, 13 received a distinction award for earning an average grade of 3.5 or higher on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. 8 received honors award for scoring an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
In addition to receiving an award certificate, this achievement is acknowledged on any AP Grade Report that is sent to colleges the following fall.

AP Chemistry Field Trip
To the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

On October 22, twenty six students from the AP Chemistry course visited the Advanced Light Source, or ALS, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as part of a unit of study of atomic structure and electron configuration of atoms.
The ALS is a third generation synchrotron that accelerates electrons to the speed of light (3.00 X 108 meters/second). The electrons are then used at over forty work stations to study electron structure and behavior in atoms. Applications for this research included determining the three-dimensional structure of molecules like proteins, in order to design more specific therapeutics for human diseases like cancer, increasing the efficiency and capacity of electronic storage devices like computer chips, and developing novel ways to treat and dispose of waste products that are harmful to the environment.
The students and two parent chaperones received a tour of the ALS and had the opportunity to hear from several scientists that talked about their research and its applications. Following the tour, the students received ALS-issued periodic tables and pencils, and had lunch in the campus cafeteria high in the Berkeley hills.
The students were asked to reflect on their experience there. Questions they had to consider included the nature of the research done at the ALS, the applications and limitations of the research, political, social and economic influences guiding funding and pursuit of the research, and if the students could picture themselves working in that type of environment in their future.
Despite being a little overwhelmed by the caliber of knowledge and research going on there and all the information they received, all the students (and the parents and the teacher!) had an interesting and fun experience.

We are slowly making progress toward our goal to raise funds for the trip. You will be able to see a performance of Charlie Cox Runs With Scissors, the play we will be performing in Edinburgh, in late January.

SENIORS
Senior Meetings - The counselors and Mrs. Cunnie have met with seniors in small groups in the College and Career Center during the week of October 13th. We reviewed important information that all senior should know regarding high school graduation, transcripts requests, SAT and ACT score reporting, NCAA eligibility, college application process, College and Career Center services, ROP Programs, and Financial Aid. Please log into Prep HQ from the San Marin website and go to "Shared Files" to download the Senior Meeting PowerPoint presentation.
Letters of Recommendation - Seniors who need a letter of recommendation from their counselor for college and/or scholarships need to make an appointment with their counselor to complete a Counselor Recommendation Packet. Please give your counselor at least 20 days prior to the first deadline.
JUNIORS
Now is a great time to start exploring post-high school options. Encourage your child to begin researching colleges, technical schools, and trade schools. There are many resources in the College and Career Center to help you get started. Communication between parents and students is so important in deciding which alternative to pursue. If your student is considering college, what criteria has he/she set in terms of a major, location, cost, and size? What type of employment would your child like to gain after high school and how can he/she prepare now? Students and parents are encouraged to contact the Counseling Office or College and Career Center to find information about each option and the necessary steps to pursue each.

PLAN Test - San Marin is pleased to offer the PLAN test to all sophomores on Saturday, November 15th. The PLAN is a practice test to the ACT test and gives students a forecast of how they might do on the ACT test. The ACT is taken in the junior and senior year and is used for college admission and placement. In addition to gauging academic achievement, PLAN provides extensive information for educational and career planning.

POST testing for reading and writing skills for both agency requirements and Academy entrance will be performed during the day.
Representatives from North Bay Area Law Enforcement Agencies will be available to answer questions and engage in recruiting during the day's activities.
Demonstrations of law enforcement equipment will be conducted by agency representatives. Academy staff will also make training simulators available to participants. Wear loose clothing, preferably sweat pants and shirt or a jogging suit. Running shoes of sufficient quality are recommended for the physical training portion of the day's activities. Youth Educational Development Program Aide
Fall 2008.Our ultimate goal is to have all students from our community enroll in college. Volunteers should work well under limited supervision with both students (middle school, high school, and college aged) and staff. Volunteers not only help our students with homework, but also with Canal Alliance sponsored projects.This opportunity is offered M-TH from 4:00-6:00 here at Canal Alliance. We would need at least 2-4 volunteers per class. We
invite high school students, preferably ages 16 and over, to work with our middle school program. Volunteers should be available at least one full shift per week, beginning Tuesday, Sept 2 and ending December 19. Training will be provided. Instructor: Jim Galindo, California Driving Academy
Driver's Education is the classroom course required by the Department of Motor Vehicles for under 18 year olds to obtain a driving permit. Our class will span 7 hours each day for 4 days (two Sat/Sun consecutive weekends). Minimum age for the class is 15 years old.
Please bring a notebook, something to write with, a bag lunch and drink.
