DR. ROBERT VIETH
Dear Parents and Students,
One of the major recommendations from last spring's accreditation committee, (WASC), was for San Marin High School to develop a comprehensive assessment system that can be used to determine the success of our overall program. Our work, therefore, this year is to develop such a plan. This plan will include a variety of traditional measures that all schools monitor such as Grade Point Average, graduation rates, and the number of students who are eligible for the University of California and the California State University System. While all of this data is important, it is highly desirable for the school to review how students are proceeding throughout the school year, not just at the end of the year.
For this reason, Novato Unified has a district goal of collecting common assessment data for all courses. This means for the first time, San Marin will be collecting and analyzing assessment data for every major course four times in the school year. This effort requires all teachers who teach a particular course to work together and develop an assessment, grade the assessment, and determine which students are advanced, proficient, basic, below basic, and far below basic regarding the meeting of important educational standards. These indicators are the same terms used on the STAR testing reporting form. The major benefit in having common assessments throughout the year is that teachers can make changes in their instruction to help students increase proficiency as the year progresses. This common assessment system will be a cornerstone of our comprehensive assessment system at San Marin High School. By next year, we should have all aspects of our assessment system in place; and we will be reporting out how the school is progressing.
The overall goal for student achievement is to have 70% of the students at San Marin High School be advanced or proficient in all courses that have a California Standards Test (CST). Currently, most CST scores at San Marin are at the 55% to 62% level. By using the common assessment data, we believe we will have an important tool in helping increase student achievement to the 70% goal. One of the most important uses of our late start meeting time on Wednesday mornings is for teachers to work on this common assessment strategy. We are addressing a school need, and we believe students will benefit from this change.
Sincerely, Robert C. Vieth, Ph.D. Principal

Ms. MEGAN PETTIS The class of 2009 is beginning the college application process. Students have received a copy of their complete transcript for coursework completed, including their rank in the class. With this information, questions arise about how class rank is done and what it really means in regards to the college application process, and also how our valedictorian and salutatorian are chosen.
Students are ranked based on their weighted total grade point average. This takes into consideration weighted value for grades earned in AP classes (A=5, B=4, C=3, etc), as compared to non-weighted grade points earned in non-AP/Honors classes (A=4, B=3, C=2, etc.). Honors taken during 11th and 12th grade are weighted. Students who have the exact same weighted GPA (to four decimal places) share a rank. Ranking is done in the fall for the purpose of college applications, and then again after final spring semester grades are submitted, for overall ranking in the graduating class.
Some students are concerned with the effect that taking non-weighted grade classes has on their overall GPA. For example, students may choose to not take an elective class during their senior year just to have a higher GPA for college entrance purposes. "Is this a good idea?" is a question that administrators and counselors are asked. The answer is it really depends on what your post-high school goals are. For some colleges, GPA and Ranking are very important, while most colleges look at the "whole picture", in other words, does the student have something to offer the college other than academics.
It is important to know that the Master Plan for higher education in California has "established an admissions principal of universal access and choice, assigning UC to select its freshman students from the top one-eighth (12.5%) of the high school graduating class and CSU from the top one-third (33.3%)". What this means is that ranking is not a factor for UC/CSU admissions. Students are compared to all other graduating students in the state of California, based on their completion of UC/CSU a-g approved courses, so for some schools greater that the percents identified above will be eligible for freshman admissions.
In regards to the selection of class valedictorian and salutatorian, this process takes place after the end of the first semester of the senior year. The formula for determination of valedictorian and salutatorian includes starting with a non-weighted GPA, then looking at the total number of AP and Honors classes that a student has taken during their entire four years in high school. Students are not penalized for taking more of fewer total courses. To be considered for valedictorian and salutatorian students must: have taken a minimum of five AP/Honors courses; been a full time student for all of 11th and 12th grade; students must take a minimum of six classes during 9th, 10th, and 11th grade and a minimum of five classes during 12th grade; students will not be disadvantaged by taking more than the minimum number of classes and earning A's. The valedictorian is the student who ranks 1 based on above criteria and the salutatorian is the student who ranks 2 based on the above criteria.
We strongly encourage all students to be involved in as many academic and extra-curricular experiences as possible during their time at San Marin High School, and to have these experiences documented on the student's transcript. Competitive colleges look at co-curricular and extra-curricular activities as a means of differentiating one student from another when determining which students they accept. |
MR. MIKE CASPER
Homecoming weekend was a tremendous success. Mrs. Fedoroff and Mr. Bergman did a fabulous job planning the weekend events and festivities. The students were well behaved and had an excellent time at the dance. The homecoming rally was particularly funny and spirited. The impressive victory over San Rafael High School made the weekend extra special for the class of 2009. The win also put our football team back in playoff contention.
My main duty at San Marin High School is keeping all the students and staff safe. Students must feel safe at school if they're going to be successful academically. This is my third year at San Marin and the school is the safest it's been since I arrived in Fall 2006. The data clearly shows this, but the best means of evaluating the overall safety of the school is talking to the students. I interact with the students daily and often ask them how they feel about San Marin. The students use words like "mellow", "chill", and "fun" when they describe the school atmosphere. During break and lunch, students aren't hostile, rather you see the students behaving well, laughing, and having fun. When students do misbehave and break rules, the students are held accountable and dealt with fairly. The culture of the school has changed in the three years I've been here.
The class of 2010 were freshman my first year. I spent a lot of time that year working with this class and helping them adjust to high school. At times, it was very difficult and discipline needed to be administered. Today, the class of 2010 are leading our underclassmen by example and showing them how to be well-behaved, productive students. Not only has this group of students made the adjustment to high school, they're looking at colleges and planning for life after high school. I'm extremely proud of the progress this class has made. More importantly, they're a group of very nice kids.
I'm using the class of 2010 as an example of how the culture of the school has improved and become safer in the past 3 years. Here is some suspension date. Notice the drop in the total number of suspensions from 2006-07 to 2007-08. The numbers are continuing to decline this year.
~~ 2006-07 first semester- 104 second semester- 172
~~ 2007-08 first semester- 72 second semester- 54
I presented the safety plan to the staff on 10/15/08 and reviewed safety procedures. I'll be presenting the safety plan for approval to the Site Leadership team on November 5. We count on everyone keeping the students safe so if you ever hear of something that concerns you please do not hesitate to call me. |
