PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dr. Robert Vieth

Dr. Robert ViethDR. ROBERT VIETH

Dear Parents and Students,

I want to thank all the parents who attended Back-to-School night, there was excellent attendance and I appreciate the many positive comments regarding the presentations by teachers. I am very proud of the excellent teachers at San
Marin High School. Our master schedule is set and we do not anticipate any other changes for this year.

At the September 2, 2008 Novato Unified School Board Meeting staff and students made a presentation about Early Bridge to College. We started developing this program last fall and it has taken off. We have many more students taking courses at the College of Marin, Indian Valley Campus than last spring, and we want to encourage even more students to take courses this spring. We should have a sign-up process in place on the San Marin campus if students are interested in taking a course this spring. Please check in with the College and Career Center or your Counselor for more information.

We are looking forward to moving to our modified block schedule on October 6. Many parents, students and faculty are excited about the changes. I have held three different meetings to discuss the changes, and all parents who attended these meetings strongly supported the modified block schedule. If you have any concerns please feel free to contact me.

Finally, if you were unable to visit the afterschool tutorial at Back-to-School night it is possible to contact Mr. Tim Blok the teacher in charge of the program to assist with arranging help for your student if you feel it would be desirable. Either call the school at 898-2121 or email Mr. Blok at tblok@nusd.org for more information.

Sincerely,
Robert C. Vieth, Ph.D. Principal

San Marin High School does not currently have an API, due to complications from District's switch from one student data system to another. We will have an API later this year.

At this time we do know several things about how students did on the 2008 CST exam (STAR) taken last May:

Comparison of student data from 2007 and 2008:

  • In 2008 635 students (of 855 students tested) maintained or increased their proficiency level as compared to 2007.
  • Increase in total number of advanced and proficient students in CST U.S. History
  • Increase in total number of advanced and proficient students in CST Ecoscience
  • Increase in total number of advanced and proficient students in CST Science
  • Increase in total number of advanced and proficient students in CST World History

Highlights from 2008:

English Language Arts

  • Grade 10 and 11 increased % advanced and proficient
  • Grade 10 increased to 71% advanced and proficient in writing conventions
  • Grade 9 increased % advanced and proficient in writing strategies

Math

  • Grade 9 (Geometry) exceeded 70% advanced and proficient (73% with 35% tested)
  • Grade 11 Algebra II increased slightly to 24% advanced and proficient (20% tested)

History Social Science

  • 10th grade World History increased to 56% advanced and proficient
  • 11th grade U.S. History remained the same with % advanced and proficient (50%)

Science

  • All grades and all subjects increased % advanced and proficient in science
  • 9th grade Biology exceeded goal to 84% advanced and proficient (36% (36% tested)
  • 10th grade Biology and Chemistry increased to 45% and 67% advanced and proficient respectively (56% and 32% tested)
  • 11th grade increased in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to 27%, 36% and 60% respectively (4%, 21%, and 7% respectively
  • 11th grade Earth increased to 61% advanced and proficient (24% tested)

One of the goals of the school is to more deeply analyze how students are performing and continuously improve our

performance. Later on this year we will share in this newsletter our specific goals for increasing student achievement.

GirlsLaxWinner2008MR. MIKE CASPER- HOMECOMING 2008

When: October 11, 2008

Parade: Begins @ 12:00 pm at the intersection of San Carlos Way/San Marin Drive

Game: Varsity Football kick-off @ 1:00 vs. San Rafael High School

Dance: Begins @ 8:00 pm in the San Marin High School gymnasium. Dance ends @ 11:00 pm

Homecoming weekend is always a festive and special time for the entire San Marin Community. Parents please know exactly what your teenage son or daughter is doing and where they are going before and after the dance. Make sure your child's cell phone is turned on at all times so you can keep open the lines of communication with them. A popular post homecoming dance destination for San Marin students is San Francisco. We do worry about your kids when they leave the dance, especially when they board busses or limousines.

We want to assure that all of our students have a memorable, fun, and safe homecoming weekend.

The football game vs. Novato High School takes place at San Marin on November 1st @ 2:00 pm. The game against our cross town rival

is always a hot ticket, so get there early. We won't be adding additional seating. We'll have additional staff and police present at this game. Go Mustangs!

The California High School Exit Exam will be administered to all 11th and 12th grade students who haven't passed on October 7th and 8th.

The intervention course is taking place in the library after school. Mrs. Taggard teaches math on Mondays and Wednesdays and Mr.

Macleod teachers English/Language arts on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's critical that all the students scheduled to take the test this October spend time getting that extra help after school.

HOMECOMING WEEK - From Leadership Class

Game on!  San Marin's annual Homecoming festivities are coming upon us.

This year's themes are centered on classic board games: the seniors are Candy Land, the juniors are Monopoly, the sophomores are Life, and the freshmen are Clue.

Homecoming week kicks off Monday October 6th with our first spirit day, Pajama Day, Tuesday is Superhero Day where students dress up as their favorite superhero, then on to Wacky Wednesday where students wear mismatched clothes, then Thursday celebrates the 80's and Friday is Green and Gold Day.  San Marin Leadership class will be hosting a rally on Friday where the Homecoming King and Queen candidates strut their stuff.  Then the seniors will be hosting a lunch time barbeque for all staff and students.

Our newest and biggest addition to the activities will be a barbeque for friends, families, students, alumni and community members on Friday, October 10th at 6 p.m. on the field.  The cost will be $5 per person in advance and $7 at the event.  Tickets will be available at the front office and at the football games beginning September 27th.  Dinner and the pep rally are included in the price.

If you would like to assist the leadership students in preparing for this big weekend please contact Mrs. Ryan Fedoroff by email at rfedoroff@nusd.org or by phone at 415-897-2154 x 760. Volunteers are most helpful and needed for the day of the events.

Edinburgh ParticipantsDRAMA DEPARTMENT NEWS

Casting has just been completed and rehearsals started for the drama department's Fall production of Figments.

The production gives the opportunity for 28 actors and 31 tech crew members to be involved. The dates for Figments were incorrectly printed in the school calendar. The correct dates are: November 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 18. Tickets will be on sale in the school office. We look forward to seeing you at one of the performances.

The students going to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform as part of the U.S. team next summer began working over the summer to raise money for the trip. They sold snow cones at Novato's Fourth of July parade. They entertained and sold refreshments at the Movies in the Park sponsored by the Novato Multicultural Commission. They recently held a car wash, and will be holding another on October 5 in front of San Marin. The students also performed Shakespeare scenes at the North Bay Shakespeare Company's production of a Midsummer's Night Dream. Also, look for future fundraisers in the newsletter and eNews.

Edinburgh Scotland Fringe Festival 2009 has been the buzz of the San Marin Drama Department all summer.  It was quite an honor to be chosen as one of 90 schools out of 1600 from around the country to be part of the US Team.

Don't miss this hysterical comedy November 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18 (New Dates)

If you are looking at high schools and are interested in drama, or any of the other performing arts, make sure you look at San Marin High School!

The San Marin Drama department is exceptional and boasts many awards such as:  Golden Bell for the San Marin Drama Program 2008, best dramatic scene and comedic monologue at 2008 Marin Theatre Company Teen Scene Fest, Silver medals for both scenes and monologues at the 2008 Lenaea State Drama Competition at Sac State.

YOU CAN HELP!
Listed below are just a few ways you can help enhance the art program at San
Marin High. The department needs help as we prepare for the 2008-2009 school
year.  We would like to enhance the technology in the department, as well as upgrade
some basic supplies such as brushes and paper cutters. Please look over the list below
and check how you can contribute:
____MY COMPANY HAS A PLACE TO DISPLAY STUDENT WORK - This is something we
would really like to see happen this year! Please think about how you can help get our students' artwork shown around Novato.
____Volunteer as a guest artist in the classroom
____Hang student art at shows
____Bake/Sell for a bake sale
____Chaperone for a field trip
____Help setup at Art Fair
____I have a skill such as carpentry, art or photography
____Cut wood or materials preparation
____Take pictures of student art for website
____Help Art Boosters plan events and fundraisers
____Other (Explain)__________________

Donations are needed and much appreciated to help run a successful art program.
San Marin art students already pay a small amount for art supplies that allow them to
use things besides pencils and paper. But the Art Department needs donations for larger
fixed supplies such as easels, drawing horses, lighting for still life setups, frames for art shows and film cameras. More funding would also enable art students to go on field trips.
If you would like to help by donating to the Art Department, please make a check payable

SAT will let students pick which scores to show colleges
High school students seeking to put the best shine on their college applications will soon be able to choose which of their SAT scores to share with admissions officers and which to hide.

The new policy, starting with the class of 2010, will allow students to take the widely used college entrance exam multiple times without admissions officers seeing their less-than-stellar efforts.  Now, colleges receive scores of all the times a student attempted the dreaded test, whether the results were spectacular, mediocre or worse.  Students will have more control over their scores which will make the test experience more comfortable and less stressful.
The SAT, which takes three hours and 45 minutes to complete, has three sections -- math, critical reasoning and writing -- and a perfect score of 2400 requires earning an 800 on each part.  Colleges typically use the test results as a uniform way to compare students who come from schools across the nation with varying grading policies and curricula.  Grades, recommendations, extracurricular activities and other factors also figure into the admission selection process.

Under the new policy, students who take the SAT or the supplemental SAT subject exams multiple times will be able to decide whether to let colleges see one, some or all of their scores. There is no extra charge, and students must opt into the program online or on the telephone; otherwise all scores will be shared.
Visit www.collegeboard.com for additional information.

Tips for College Essays

(Compiled from comments of college counselors from all over the world)

The student should write about something he/she cares about.  Proofread!  Proofread!  Proofread!  It can be about the most mundane subject, but I want to see your reflection in the essay.

If you are writing about an influential person, use the essay as an opportunity to see your personality reflected through the prism of that person.  Why are you different than you would have been if you hadn't known the person?

Tell about yourself through a story/anecdote. Allow plenty of time to write a first draft, proof multiple times for edits, and finalize essay (don't even THINK about waiting until the night before the deadline)

Don't write on a topic that "sounds" impressive.  Write in a style that reflects who you are.  Don't write about your summer trip to Israel or any event that you know that 5 of your friends could write about.

Make sure that the essay could only be written by you.  You must present a personal perspective that allows colleges to view an aspect of you that is not reflected elsewhere in your application.

The opening sentence needs to "grab" the reader.  An imaginative opening will get their attention.

Be sure to focus on the "why" of an experience, not the "what."  Those essays that reveal an intellectual epiphany are rare - but impressive.  For those who find their intellectual passions while in high school and somehow tie it to their collegiate goals, that'll impress any sound admissions counselor.   (Brown)

Above all, be yourself.  Good writing is lean, progressive, imaginative, grounded in specifics, energized by apt verbs, and respectful of the reader's intelligence.
Go for depth rather than breadth, answer the question, write about something you care about, use the essay to explain a problem, illustrate an interest, be sincere, be interesting, and proofread.

DON'T write a glorified list or a travelogue or blame others for your situation.  Focus on a specific idea, not a generality (like taking a picture and focusing on one specific part of the picture)

Be clear, concise, and insightful.  1.  Own it.  2.  Keep it short.  3.  Make one point well.  4.  Do not use a thesaurus.  5.  Like it.

Share the essay with someone, preferably an English teacher, to catch the minor syntax things you don't catch because you know what you meant to say.
Be yourself, write your own essay, use your own voice and have a little fun with it.  It is not a book report.  Remember, someone is going to be reading yours, alongside 80 - 100 other essays that day and the same for the next 12 weeks.

NOVATO SCHOOL FUEL

Welcome to the New School Year from School Fuel

School Fuel wants to welcome all families and community members back for the 2008-09 school year.  The Novato Unified School District has some wonderful new programs in place, several enthusiastic new teachers and administrators, and most importantly, approximately 8,000 students who are looking forward to a productive and enriching school year.

This academic year, School Fuel is proud to be able to continue its support for elementary music, visual and performing arts electives at each middle school and high school, and we are also providing funds to support teacher training and classroom supplies for the new science curriculum that has been adopted K-12 for the district.  We want to thank all of you who have helped make these important programs available to our students!  Because of all of your efforts, we have been able to donate $152,000 to the schools to fund these programs for this academic year.

We hope that you were able to read our letter in your Back-to-School packets, and that you will continue to help us build a strong foundation for Novato's students this year.   To this end, we want you to know about the following three events that will be coming up in 2008 and should be great fun.
Upcoming School Fuel Events

* Bocce Tournament on Sunday, October 19th --  School Fuel will be hosting our first-ever bocce tournament this fall at the lovely bocce courts in San Rafael.  Find a foursome and come join in the fun.  More details and registration information will be posted on the School Fuel website soon.

* School Fuel Haunted House, Friday October 24th --  School Fuel will be hosting a haunted house at the NUSD administration building on this evening between 5:00 and 7:30 pm.  This was a great time for the whole family last year, and this year will be even better.

* Start your holiday shopping at Matt & Jeff's Hand Car Wash on Thursday, November 13th - Come visit the terrific gift shop at Matt & Jeff's Hand Car Wash on November 13th.  Matt & Jeff will donate 20% of the proceeds to School Fuel from all items purchased at the gift shop this day to School Fuel.  In addition, in the evening, there will be refreshments and live music by Novato students.  Don't forget that you can also save money for yourself with Matt & Jeff's discount cards that give you 10 cents off per gallon when you purchase a car wash.  You can save even more when you use your Costco American Express card to pay.

Matt & Jeff's has always been a fantastic supporter of School Fuel, and donates a penny per gallon to School Fuel for every gallon of gas they sell every day.  Over the years this has added up to over $90,000.  Your patronage of their business has helped them support School Fuel.  Thank you.
