EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION/TEACHER OCCUPATIONS INTERNSHIPS
LAST CHANCE TO EARN ACADEMIC CREDIT DURING THE SUMMER...
Enjoy working with Children? Early Childhood Education/Teacher Occupations Internships still available for Summer
Students interested in working with children and earning academic credit can still sign-up for a summer internship. The summer program provides students with hands-on experience in teaching young children. Field placements are located at pre-school sites, elementary schools and in other education-related programs. Internships are designed to cover the variety of ages and developmental needs found in children. The program also includes an ROP class that covers child developmental psychology, positive discipline, lesson planning, observations skills, and professionalism. In addition, this course gives students an overview of K-12 education occupations.
The summer program begins the week of June 23 and concludes the last week of July. Students are in the field approximately 9 hours/week and attend the ROP class for 2 - 3 hours/week. Students will earn high school elective credits, American Heart Association CPR Certification, and an ROP Job Readiness Certificate.

CAUGHT RECYCLING -
RECYCLING STAKEHOLDERS DONATE TO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS When Novato Unified School District was grappling with the news of a $160,000 bill for trash pick up this spring, a Recycling Stakeholders Team was formed to help the district establish more effective recycling programs-beginning immediately at both of the high schools. The team was comprised of representatives from district staff, Novato Disposal, Marin Conservation Corps, the Novato Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class Green Team, Novato LiveWell Network, Next Generation, Sustainable Novato, and the Green Schools Coalition of Novato. The various groups successfully collaborated to launch recycling programs on Earth Day. In an effort to make the high school recycling programs more sustainable as new freshmen enter the campus next fall, Novato Disposal and the Chamber Leadership Class Green Team have collectively donated $1,000 to split between the two schools to fund recycling incentives like poster contests and raffle prizes in a "Caught Recycling" Program. When students are caught recycling, they are given a raffle ticket to put their name and contact info on for collection at the main office. Drawings are made regularly at each school, and the winner(s) are announced over the PA system. The prizes will typically be gift cards to popular coffee or smoothie hangouts.
The donors from the Chamber Leadership Class represent State Farm Insurance, Bradley Electric (WBE), and Novato Sanitary District. The other hardworking members of the Chamber Leadership Class represent the Courtyard by Marriott and the Novato Youth Center. The program will be administered by the Green Schools Coalition of Novato. For more information, please contact my.ch@comcast.net |

CLASS SCHEDULE VERIFICATION
Your students' Class Verification Sheet for 2008-2009 has been mailed home. Please verify the classes on the sheet.
The following is from Ms. Megan Pettis, Assistant Principal -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your Verification Sheet is Correct, no further action is required.
If your Verification Sheet is incorrect, please make your corrections directly on the Verification Sheet and return it with a parent signature to the Counseling Office by Friday, June 13, 2008. Remember that before you can sign up for a course, you must meet the prerequisites, including the placement criteria for Honors or AP courses. (Refer to the Academic Planning Guide for complete details for each course).
The number of students requests for each course determine our staffing needs for next year. Therefore, "lateral" schedule changes (i.e. elective course changes) will not be permitted after the Verification Sheet have been returned. If your Verification Sheet is not returned by June 13, 2008, we will assume that your requests are accurate and no changes are needed.
The ONLY Schedule change requests that will be allowed during the first 5 school days are for the following reasons 1). Missing a class period on schedule; 2). Incorrect placement on a Core Subject; 3). Academic Need (Graduation / College Requirement); 4). Drop a Course without adding a new one.
NO schedule changes will be permitted after the first 10 school days per Board Policy 5121. All courses, with the exception of Health/Geography and American Government/Economics, are yearlong courses, therefore students will not be permitted to drop a course at the end of the first semester and add a new course.
Please contact your counselor or administrator at 898-2123, if you have any questions. |

NOVATO SCHOOL FUEL EVENTS
Walk for Schools on June 28th! A group of Novato parents is organizing a Walk for Schools on June 28th. The walk will start and end at Marion Field near the intersection of Grant Ave. and 7th St. Bring your friends, the kids, and even your dog, and come out to walk to show our support for the schools, have fun, and raise some money for the schools at the same time. The event will start at 9:00 am, and you can choose a walking route of 2, 4, or 6 miles. To register, stop by the Walk for Schools booth at the Novato Farmers' Market, or send the registration form to the School Fuel office at 448 Ignacio Blvd., #410, Novato, CA 94949.

Early that morning, the Tamalpa Runner's club is organizing a race and fun run that will start on Grant Ave. The group is working in cooperation with School Fuel to help support local schools. See http://www.tamalparunners.org for more information and to register online for the race or walk.
Also, the Novato Unified School District and School Fuel are working on a combined Novato Schools entry in the Novato 4th of July Parade. We want to make sure that every school is represented and that our students have the opportunity to show their stuff for the whole community. Every student, staff, or family member is welcome to join the contingent. If you have questions or a particular idea about our entry, please call Susan Mathews at 209-9616.

SCHOOL FUEL
A BIT MORE HELP STILL NEEDED TO SAVE SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR NEXT YEAR!
School Fuel, the foundation for Novato public schools, is still working hard to help fund programs for the 2008/09 school year. Hundreds of community members and businesses have contributed already, and so far School Fuel has raised enough money to continue funding an elementary music teacher, and one elective class at each of the middle and high schools. For just a few thousand dollars more, we can also fund these programs for our schools next year:
* Restoring library clerk hours at the secondary schools so that students have access to the libraries before and after school ($25,000);
* Funding the school-to-career coordinator at the high schools to help match students with internship opportunities ($35,000);
* Teacher training for the new elementary (K-5) science curriculum that will be implemented next year ($30,000).
Please take a moment to send in your donation (or an additional donation) as soon as possible. Every child at every school will benefit. If you've misplaced your donation form, donation envelopes are available in school offices, the form is available for download on the School Fuel website, or you can make an online donation at --
www.novatoschoolfuel.org/sdonors.htm.
Let's make sure we are all doing what we can to keep our students on track next year! For more information call Elizabeth Sleath at 892-4490. Plan to Kick-Off the New School Year with a Little Shakespeare

THIRD EYE BLIND to headline 6th Annual Rock'n Blues By the Lake - Sept 27th, 2008
Blues By the Lake Foundation is proud to announce that this year's headliner for the 6th Annual Rock'n Blues By the Lake is THIRD EYE BLIND. This event which takes place Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Stafford Lake, Novato is lucky to have this mainstream bay area band. THIRD EYE BLIND is hugely successful and their CD's have produced one mega-hit after another. They have consistent airplay on radio and have just returned from touring the East Coast selling out venues night after night including two nights in New York City. THIRD EYE BLIND along with other popular supporting acts will make for another highly successful show. A very important part of the show is the performances by the middle and high school bands. San Marin and Novato High perform on the high school stage between the headliners next to the main stage. On the teen stage, there will also be a Battle of the Bands hosted by FOX Radio following the middle school performers. The carnival will once again have booths from all the schools and there will be a children's stage with entertainment starring Tim Cain. A new addition to the event this year is "GUITAR HERO" and X-BOX. They will located in the teenage area. The inventor of GUITAR HERO will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs. Another tricked-out car will be in the silent auction area along with lots of great other raffle items. Food as always will be from local vendors who are graciously donating at least 50% of the money to the schools. Novato public schools will be selling tickets for this event at the beginning of school in August. There will be extra monetary incentives for schools that get volunteers and sell tickets. There will be Volunteer voucher ticket this year for those who work a 3-hour shift. Please contact your Rock'n Blues REP for more information.
