PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS
Dr. Robert Vieth

Dr. Robert ViethDR. ROBERT VIETH- As many of you know the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) visited San Marin High School on March 30 through April 2 for our accreditation visit. While we haven't received the final report we do know some of the recommendations and accomplishments of the school that are part of the report.

First, some of the accomplishments of the school:

* The school is a safe learning environment for all students.
* The school has an excellent College and Career Center.
* There is an outstanding and comprehensive co-curricular program with  high participation.
* There are many dedicated and caring teachers providing strong programs.
* There are many excellent parent groups including a strong and supportive PTSA.
* There is a new strong leadership team providing excellent guidance and support to the  total school community.

Now some of the major recommendations:

* Continue to improve the sheltered classes so the English Language Learners           continue to make academic gains. (Staff development for all teachers in strong teaching strategies for ELL students)
* Fully implement Data Director so all teachers have the skills and tools to analyze student achievement data to improve instruction.
* Implement a tutorial program. (This will probably happen right after the normal school day and will be for athletics and non-sports students on different days).
* Further develop teacher leadership capacity throughout the school.  (I will be recommending the Site Leadership Team fund Marin County staff development in this area as well as start the National Board Certification process for interested teachers.)

The full report from the visiting committee sent to WASC should be on our website before school is out this spring and we will hear about the term of accreditation before school starts in August.

I want to thank everyone for participating in all the hard work that went into completing this worthwhile process.
website.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS' ADDRESS
GirlsLaxWinner2008MS. MEGAN PETTIS - The year is quickly coming to an end.  We are hard at work creating a master schedule that will meet the needs of all of our students, while also absorbing the impact of the budget cuts and staffing reductions at the high school level.  We will still be offering class size reduction for 9th grade English and math, and are confident that we will be able to continue to offer a wide range of classes that meets the needs of all of our students.  We do know that the master schedule will be much tighter for 2008-09 than it was for 2007-08.  What this means for students is that they may not have much flexibility in making schedule changes in the fall.

It is extremely important that if a student knows they would like to change their schedule request, they make an appointment with their counselor to do so as soon as possible.

Prior to the last day of school, verification letters will be mailed to all students listing the courses they have requested for the 2008-09 school year.  Some students may see classes on their verification that are different that what they originally requested, if they do not meet the pre-requisite criteria for the course they signed up for.  Students and parents will have an opportunity to change requests prior to student schedules being finalized.  Instructions regarding the procedure for making a change will be detailed in the letter accompanying the verification list.  In addition to parent/student requests for change, staff members may also contact students to encourage a change of course consideration.

Please read the back to school information to find out when schedules will be available for student pick up.

Have a wonderful summer, thank you for a great year, see you in August.
GirlsLaxWinner2008MR. MIKE CASPER- We're in the final stretch of another successful and outstanding year at San Marin High School.

We completed the sixth day of STAR testing on Tuesday May 7, 2008. The teachers have done a terrific job motivating their students and stressing the importance of the STAR tests for not only them, but San Marin High School as well. I've been very pleased with the feedback teachers have given me in regards to their student's effort and attitude during testing. I'd like to stress again that STAR testing is just one of many ways student progress is assessed.

I want to thank all the parents for supporting the school and urging their children to participate and take the STAR tests seriously.

STAR testing make-up tests will be Monday May 12-Friday May 16.  Students will be called out of class at the beginning of 2nd period on these days. We'll begin Monday with Life Science make-ups, and simply go 1st-7th period in that order. Please call me at San Marin if you have any questions or concerns.

SAN MARIN GIRLS SOCCER
I want to congratulate the San Marin Varsity girl's soccer team for reaching the MCAL playoffs. The girls lost a tough 1-0 match in the first round of the playoffs to Marin Catholic. Marin Catholic scored mid way into the first half, but San Marin applied most of the offensive pressure in the second half. First year head coach Adam Billington did an excellent job and we look forward to another successful year next year. Great job San Marin varsity girl's soccer!

LAST Booster Meeting of this school year ~ Wednesday, May 21 - at 7:15p.m.
School FuelDRAMA DEPARTMENT

As the school year comes to a close, we would like to thank all the parents who have supported the drama program this year.  Without the parents who build the sets, help with costumes, sell refreshments and tickets, and who have become drama boosters members, there would be no drama program. Thanks so much.

We would like to announce some exciting news for next year. San Marin Drama Teacher, Linda Kislingbury Cain got exciting news on April 29.   San Marin Drama was chosen as one of 99 schools from around the country to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August of 2009.  With a thousand performing companies from all over the world, The Fringe is the largest arts Festival in the World. San Marin will part of the US team.

Ms. K. says it's been a long process.  Surprised in January to find out that San Marin Drama had been nominated by the Lenaea Drama Festival Director, Scott Adams (Lenaea is the largest drama competition in North America).  Kislingbury only had a few weeks to get the extensive application put together. In addition to the written application, we had to include a DVD of clips from different plays, press releases, and recommendations.  With the help of Drama Booster parents Janice and David Blair (who put together nine copies of very professional folders) and Drama Booster President Val Zabko (who helped with the questionnaire) the application was submitted.    Nine Advisors (University theatre professionals from around the country) then ranked the completed applications.

Ms. K feels this is the opportunity of lifetime for her students.  "We will start our extensive fundraising activities now," she said.  "Stay tuned for more on that."    Students are thrilled to know they will represent their country as part of the US team.  Students will be housed in dorms at University of Edinburgh and be able to explore not only Edinburgh and other sights in Scotland but see theatre from around the world.

It's going to be an exciting year in 2008-09. See you next year.

MUTIMEDIA / VIDEO PRODUCTION ELECTIVE

San Marin High School is proud to offer new Multimedia and Video Production electives for next year.  It is expected that by the end of these three courses, students will gain strong visual and media literacy for life-long use; graphic related vocabulary and skill; aesthetics perception and analysis skills; historical and cultural awareness as related to multimedia; and awareness of career and high education choices in the multimedia field.

The course prepares students for college study in multimedia-related majors; employment in a communication or arts-related field; and/or personal digital communication.  Students completing the Video Production course will satisfy the 1-year Visual Performing Arts requirement for University of California and Cal State University admission requirements.   Please see your child's counselor if you are interested in the courses.

Mr. SpinradMR. SPINRAD, GOLDEN BELL AWARD WINNER

Mike Spinrad has always enjoyed teaching and came to San Marin after years of teaching private drum lessons, Sunday School, and serving as assistant band director at Kent Middle School.

The classroom feels quite natural to him since it is the "family business." His father and sister are both professors. Always pursuing a rich and varied life, before entering the teaching profession Spinrad worked as a marketing professional for Bay Area engineering firms, served as a marriage, family, and child counselor intern, and toured the United States as a professional musician.

In five years he has worked on raising the number of social studies honors and AP offerings at San Marin from one to four, strived to incorporate professional learning community concepts in his department, and helped support the community with his musical talents.

A born performer, Spinrad played rock music on Gary Gates field to raise money for the music department and emceed at a San Marin event benefiting San Diego fire victims.

Last year he received a Certificate of Recognition at a lunch hosted by the Novato Rotary Club. The luncheon honored a teacher from each of Novato's schools. He was also nominated by two class of 2006 students and recognized by UC San Diego's Teacher Recognition Program. He received an Award of Excellence certificate from UCSD for academic year 2006-2007.

As part of a three-year Teaching American History program, Spinrad and another teacher presented at the California Conference for the Social Studies conference March, 2007 in Oakland.

Spinrad's work has been published in Percussive Notes and his jazz is quite popular in Japan.

SanPedroSchoolSEEDS OF LEARNING

¡Por favor!  Be part of our gift!

Greetings to the San Marin community from Señora Watson, of the Foreign Language Department.   For the last two years, my students and I have participated in a sister school relationship with Escuela San Pedro, in Nicaragua.  The school is located in a small rural community of the same name, San Pedro, and was built with the help of volunteers from Seeds of Learning (SOL), a non-profit organization based in Sonoma, CA.  As our school year moves toward a close, we would like to be able to make a gift of funds to Escuela San Pedro, to support their efforts to offer educational opportunities to the young people of their community.

I first learned of  SOL when attending the memorial service of Deborah Standish, a beloved San Marin teacher. Deborah, along with her husband and daughters (both SM graduates), spent several vacations as a SOL volunteer, working side by side with community members from San Pedro, building this very school.  She would be delighted to see the sets of drawings, poems and cultural information sent to us three or four times a year by the students of San Pedro.  My students have enjoyed reciprocating with some beautiful writing and illustrations.  They have shared descriptions of themselves, their preferred activities, and the ways their families celebrate favorite holidays. In February, we composed poems of love and friendship.  My fourth-year students wrote some very thoughtful poetry exploring the theme of adolescence, which I think the older students in San Pedro found particularly interesting.

We invite you, in fact we implore you, to join us in supporting our sister school by making a donation, large or small, to this fundraising effort.  A contribution can be sent through one of my students, if you happen to know one, or can be sent to the main office, to the attention of Marcelyn Watson.  Checks should be made payable to Seeds of Learning, with a notation on the memo line "for Escuela San Pedro".  If your address is on the check, SOL will send you a receipt for tax purposes.

As we battle on to protect funding for education in our own community, perhaps we can feel some solidarity with people all around the globe whose most fervent hope lies in the education of their children.  And if you were touched by the vibrant and generous spirit of Deborah Standish, as so many in this community were, consider this an opportunity to honor her.  A few dollars will help purchase much needed supplies for some very eager students in San Pedro, Nicaragua.  ¡Mil gracias!

TrophyMARIN ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Melanie Gauci One of three universities is going to hit the lottery next fall. Be it the University of Maryland, Purdue University or Gonzaga University the winner will be thrilled to be receiving San Marin's Melanie Gauci as an undergraduate. Melanie has narrowed her post high school choices to those three institutions and plans to major in biomedical engineering. At San Marin, Melanie was an outstanding basketball and soccer player and team leader. She was named MVP and team captain of the basketball team in both her junior and senior years, receiving All-league recognition. Her love of basketball and soccer has led her to coach both sports at the youth level. When the Mustangs had difficulty finding a freshman basketball coach for summer league she stepped up and took the job. She was an NCS, CIF Scholastic Athlete award winner all four years. Melanie maintains a 4.08 GPA despite a tough workload, which includes Honors English and Spanish and AP Biology, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry and Calculus. Her parents, Ken and Sue, are proudest of the fact that Melanie has been able to be totally committed to her athletics while maintaining her GPA.

Christopher Sangster
This UC Berkeley bound tennis and water polo star is leaving a big hole to fill at San Marin High. For four years Christopher Sangster has been a mainstay of the Mustang's tennis and water polo teams and his shoes are going to be hard to fill. He was voted the MVP of the water polo team in both his junior and senior seasons. He was also the MVP on the tennis squad as a junior. This 4.18 GPA student-athlete took home All-league honors in both sports. Christopher's move to Berkeley will have an equally devastating impact on the San Marin community in general. His volunteerism has been widespread including working for a third grade ELL summer school class working one-on-one with Spanish speakers. He has also earned scouting's highest honor -- Eagle Scout. His Eagle project was building a brick labyrinth in the yard of the St. Francis of Assisi Church . At San Marin Christopher is a seven-semester CSF member and was a volunteer counselor at the Walker Creek Outdoor Education project. Although he doesn't see himself as a Division I athlete, Christopher hopes to participate at the club and intramural levels.

Girls Lax Defeats NovatoSAN MARIN GIRLS LACROSSE

Beating TAM on May 2 put the San Marin Varsity Girls Lax Team 4th in the final league standings with a berth in the MCAL playoffs!!   A "first" for the SMHS Girls Varsity Team since its first season in 2003 and an amazing turnaround from last season's 1-6 record.

The  San Marin Girls psyched themselves up to take on the undefeated Redwood team. Playing on Redwood's home field, San Marin fought hard, but was only able to score 3 goals to Redwood's 23. San Marin never gave up and moved players around as well as using their second string to shake up Redwood. Both teams have a large contingent of seniors, so returning San Marin players look forward to a rematch next season!

SMHS Varsity Girls Lax Team would like to thank their coach Justin Kurland for a terrific season!

One of San Marin Robotics Club's mission is to cultivate interest and to help develop strong science and technology as well as business related knowledge and skills for our youth in Novato.  We plan to accomplish this by outreaching to the community.

On May 20th, the Robotics club visited Sinaloa Middle school and  made a wonderful presentation to Hill Middle Visit 2008interested students.  (BTW, Sinaloa's professional projection equipment was quite impressive and made the video presentation almost like how they did it at the FRC Kickoff meeting at U.C. COLLEGE PLANNING

This is a secure internet-based tool for students and their counselors to manage the college and career planning process.  We will be able to communicate with students about new scholarships, summer programs, college representative visits, etc.   Students and parents will be able to track applications as they proceed through our office and much, much more.  We are excited about this new way for students to do their application process.

Juniors -- Visit the Counseling Office and College & Career Center and get materials to register for the SAT I and SAT II test administrations in May and June.  A plethora of information (and if you don't know the word "plethora", you'd better get busy) is available at the SAT "mothership", at http://www.collegeboard.com or you can also get information about the ACT to see if that style of standardized testing is more appropriate for you.   Explore ACT test prep at http://www.actstudent.org where you will find information about acquiring practice tests with real ACT test, practice essays for the optional ACT Writing Test with real-time scoring, and a comprehensive content review for each of the ACT's four required tests - English, Math, Reading, and Science.

ACT believes that since the ACT Assessment is a measure of your academic achievement, it is not possible to "cram" for the test.  But test-prep classes and programs such as ACT Online Prep can help students become familiar with the tests, easing a lot of the anxiety often encountered on test day.  The same is true of practice tests and computer programs designed to familiarize students with SAT I and II.  The more familiar you are with the structure and style of a test, the more comfortable you will be when the real test is actually in front of you.

Remember, June is a good time for juniors to take the SAT II Subject Tests, especially for courses which end in eleventh grade.  While you're visiting the guidance counselor, you should also pick up information to sign up to take the AP Exam in May.  AP credits are a wonderful way to defray college expenses and give you time to take more electives, go abroad without jeopardizing your major, or even graduate early.  Don't miss out on this great deal.  By the way, colleges like to see transcripts which include AP classes.  These show that a student is taking the most challenging curriculum a high school can offer.  They also give admissions officers a chance to see how a student can relate to actual college-level work.

If you are planning to visit colleges in the spring, write or call admissions offices for brochures and information.  Talk to your parents about visiting schools.  Start leafing through college books.  Develop some ideas about what you like and find out what schools address your interests.  This is an ideal time to prepare a preliminary college list, discuss travel and interviewing skills, and find out what range of colleges are good fits for you.  If you play a spring sport that you'd like to continue in college, ask your coach to help you talk to college coaches or athletic directors.  Videotape your skills.  By this time next year, it will be too late to strut your stuff in person.  It also helps to make an appointment to talk to college coaches and athletic directors when you visit the campus for a tour and admissions interview.  It might help you decide if you'd like to play for the college team or just stick to club sports.

The programs allow the students to set up a profile and save information. The Bridges program is accessible from home. Parents check out what is available for your student here at San Marin.

COMMUNITY EVENTS
SCHOOL FUEL

A BIT MORE HELP STILL NEEDED TO SAVE SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR NEXT YEAR!

School Fuel, the foundation for Novato public schools, is still working hard to help fund programs for the 2008/09 school year.
Hundreds of community members and businesses have contributed already, and so far School Fuel has raised enough money to continue funding an elementary music teacher, and one elective class at each of the middle and high schools.  For just a few thousand dollars more, we can also fund these programs for our schools next year:

*  Restoring library clerk hours at the secondary schools so that students have access to the libraries before and after school ($25,000);
*  Funding the school-to-career coordinator at the high schools to help match students with internship opportunities ($35,000);
*  Teacher training for the new elementary (K-5) science curriculum that will be implemented next year ($30,000).

Please take a moment to send in your donation (or an additional donation) as soon as possible.  Every child at every school will benefit.  If you've misplaced your donation form, donation envelopes are available in school offices, the form is available for download on the School Fuel website, or you can make an online donation at --
www.novatoschoolfuel.org/sdonors.htm

Let's make sure we are all doing what we can to keep our students on track next year! For more information call Elizabeth Sleath at 892-4490.

THIRD EYE BLIND to headline 6th Annual Rock'n Blues By the Lake

Blues By the Lake Foundation is proud to announce that this year's headliner for the 6th Annual Rock'n Blues By the Lake is THIRD EYE BLIND.  This event which takes place Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Stafford Lake, Novato is lucky to have this mainstream bay area band.  THIRD EYE BLIND is hugely successful and their CD's have produced one megahit after another.  They have consistent airplay on radio and have just returned from touring the East Coast selling out venues night after night including two nights in New York City.  THIRD EYE BLIND along with other popular supporting acts will make for another highly successful show.

A very important part of the show are the performances by the middle and high school bands.  San Marin and Novato High perform on the high school stage between the headliners next to the main stage.  On the teen stage, there will also be a Battle of the Bands hosted by FOX Radio following the middle school performers.  The carnival will once again have booths from all the schools and there will be a children's stage with entertainment.

A new addition to the event this year is "GUITAR HERO" and X-BOX.  They will located in the teenage area.  The inventor of GUITAR HERO will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs.

Another tricked-out car will be in the silent auction area along with lots of great other raffle items.  Food as always will be from local vendors who are graciously donating at least 50% of the money to the schools.

Novato public schools will be selling tickets for this event at the beginning of school in August.  There will be extra monetary incentives for schools that get volunteers and sell tickets.  There will be Volunteer voucher ticket this year for those who work a 3-hour shift.  Please contact your Rock'n Blues REP for more information.

The Foundation can use as much sponsor participation to support and pay for this years show.  It is also a great way to have your business name out there in front of thousands of community members.  Please call the Rock'n Blues hotline at (415) 897-9383 or send an email to epshopgirl@yahoo.com.

Thank you for supporting the schools and see you at the lake,
