Penguin EmpireROBOTICS CLUB NEWS

San Marin Robotics Club Penguin Empire Team  competed in the First Robotics Competition (FRC) Regional Event at U.C. Davis from 3/20 to 3/23.

The team did amazingly, won 2nd Place among 37 teams, the Highest Seed Rockie Team award, and 2nd place as the Captain  of the Alliance team for the finals.

As a roockie team, our standing is way beyond what we have ever imaged.  The competition was fierce with 37 teams from various parts of CA, and two from out of state.

See video for one of the matches.  In this film, Aurora (Penguin Empire 2008 Robot) is the blue team with blue flag and holding the blue ball

Each robot is approximately 120LBs and 6 ft tall folded.

This is an amazing exxperience for all and I am sure we will be entering into next year's competition.

Watch for Aurora's ambassador work, coming soon to Sinaloa, Hill, School Fuel event, Rotary Club meetings. etc.

The team also created a website and create a 3-D Animation for  competition.

Advanced Placement (AP) Testing (May 5 - 15)

Students who are enrolled in AP courses this year are highly encouraged to take the AP Exam in May.  The AP Exams are essential part of the AP experience and provide students and colleges and universities with a standardized measure of what a student has accomplished in the AP classroom.

Colleges and universities expect that students enrolled in an AP course will take the AP Exam at the end of the course.  Students' AP Exam grades, if sufficiently high (scaled 1 - 5), could earn students college credit, placement, or both at thousands of colleges and universities in the United States.  Essentially, students can earn up to a full year of college credit (sophomore standing) once students have attained a sufficient number of qualifying AP Exam grades.  Visit www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy for more information.  Below is the 2008 AP testing schedule.

AP Signups - Signups for AP testing will begin March 24th.  AP Exam fee is $84 for each exam.  Students need to complete an AP Exam Order Form available from their AP teacher or in the Counseling Office.  Return the completed AP Exam Order Form to Mrs. Ramadan in the Counseling Office with a check payable to San Marin High School.  Deadline to sign up to take an AP Exam is March 27th.

AP Fee Reduction - The State of California, College Board, and San Marin High School provide fee reductions for academically qualified candidates who are in acute financial need.  If the student is a member of a family whose taxable income for 2007 was at or below the figures provided in the table below, and the student is enrolled in the AP Course, that student qualifies for a fee reduction.  Students who qualify for a fee reduction will pay $54 for each exam.  If your family qualifies for a fee reduction, please see Mr. Hu with your completed order form, and a signed copy of your most recent Tax Form 1040.

Dear San Marin Parents and Supporters,

In June of 2008, San Marin High School will host a Safe and Sober Grad Night celebration commemorating a major achievement in the lives of the graduating seniors.   This parent planned and monitored event, held annually in Novato for almost 20 years, provides a fun and safe graduation party that is memorable without alcohol or drugs.  In light of the potential danger when young people make poor celebration choices, we feel that this event is of critical importance to ensure the safety of our Seniors.

I am writing you with the hope that you will be able to assist us in this year's fund raising efforts for this important event..  All donations go directly to the students.  As a community, we hope to give the graduating students an event that will be remembered and treasured for a lifetime.

PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association)
Girls Softball 2007 Champion

Last month PTSA membership information was sent home to all families who did not already sign up to be members of the PTSA. Why join? On all levels, national, state, district, local supports student and teacher initiatives. A portion of your PTSA membership stays at the school and helps fund our budget.

Here are a few examples of what the PTSA has accomplished this year: help fund science plays, fund green school initiatives, purchase books and technology for the college and career center, print the monthly newsletters, and support counseling services through Novato Youth Center, and Valenthings for the teachers and staff!

Please be advised that all senior students who are PTSA members are eligible to apply for PTSA scholarships. A district scholarship application will be given to each senior student member during the month of March.

We are currently seeking board members and event chair people for the PTSA. There is no experience necessary. Please contact Norma Dawson if you are interested in joining the fun!

The San Marin PTSA would like to thank all the members and the parents who donated money, supplies and time to Valenthings event. The teachers are extremely grateful for all the supplies.

Thank you for all your support of San Marin & PTSA!

Carol England, Dept. Chair, Special Education is knitting scarf after scarf after scarf. Why, you ask is she doing this? Well, she is knitting all these scarves to raise money for students in the Special Education Dept. who will be attending college in the fall. Her goal is to raise $2000!!

Her scarves are made of a variety of yarns. Many of the yarns have been sent to her by a friend in Mulheim, Germany. The scarves can be seen in the "mini scarf botique" in the Resource Center located in room 603.  Prices range from $32.50 to $55 and come in a variety of colors.

Contact her via email at cengland@nusd.org or she can also be reached at San Marin Tuesday-Thursday each week.

GREEN SCHOOL CAREER DAY PARENT PRESENTERS NEEDED!

San Marin High School and Next Generation are proud to announce the first San Marin High Green Week and Earth Day celebration!  Part of this event will be Green Career Day, held on Wednesday April 23, 2008. We would like to invite you to participate by giving a presentation highlighting your green career, including what it entails, how you became interested and trained, and how it benefits your community and the planet.

Green Career Day is an exciting event, which promotes careers, actions, and products that focus on sustainability and allows students a glimpse into potential jobs that can benefit themselves, their communities, and the environment. The morning will be filled with inspirational speakers from a variety of green and environmentally oriented professions, followed by a lunch for the speakers put on by San Marin PTSA.

We are looking for green professionals to speak in classes. Presentations should be visual, stimulating, and interactive.  The periods are 43 minutes long, and time should be left for a brief introduction and closing by the teacher.    Presentations will be during periods 2 through 4 (9:16-9:59, 10:04-10:47, 11:02-11:45), followed by lunch during period 5 (11:50-12:33). Ideally, we would like speakers to be available to speak all three periods, but it is not required.

If you are interested in participating in San Marin's Green Career Day, please respond by Friday, March 14 with time availability and any equipment that you will need for your presentation, including audio-visual.  Also include a brief summary of your presentation content.

    Thank you very much!

This program allows students to explore different career pathways, giving them information on the education required, employment forecast, earning power, other related links, and interview with a person in the field and other useful information. The programs allow the students to set up a profile and save information. The Bridges program is accessible from home. Parents check out what is available for your student here at San Marin.

The pin application can be found at www.pin.ed.gov. All students and parents should fill out these forms and submit them to the colleges they plan to attend. Many of the scholarships offered at the individual colleges require the FAFSA to be completed in order to be eligible. The CAL Grant GPA verification forms are also available in the CCC. All students going to a junior college, four colleges or university in California should fill out this form. It is a simple form and should be turned in the registrar at the counseling office when completed.

    SCHOOL FUEL BULLETIN
    December 26, 2007

School Fuel is sending you the following budget news as part of our mission to keep you informed about what is happening in local education.

CALIFORNIA BUDGET DEFICITS LIKELY TO HIT NOVATO SCHOOLS

The latest state budget news indicates that California is facing a huge budget deficit.  According to a press release issued by the Governor's office
    (
http://gov.ca.gov/press-release/8379/), Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he will declare a fiscal emergency and call a special session of the Legislature because of California's darkening budget picture.  He wants to work with lawmakers to cut programs before shrinking tax revenue from the collapsed housing market leaves the state with a budget shortfall that could reach $14 billion over the next year-and-a-half.  The emergency declaration will be issued next month along with his proposed budget for the coming fiscal year.  The declaration triggers a special session and a constitutional requirement for the Legislature to reopen the current budget and cut costs or increase taxes within 45 days.  In the statement, Schwarzenegger said he wants to control the deficit with spending cuts.  According to press reports, each state department has been directed to find cuts of ten percent of their spending.

Because state funding is the primary source of operating funds for Novato schools, state budget cuts may have a serious impact on the money available for education programs locally.  The Novato school board trustees and administrators will be monitoring the situation closely as they develop their budget for next year.  However, there is no doubt that a significant cut in funds from the state could have a dramatic impact on the educational programs that the district provides.

School Fuel will continue to follow the local education budget situation, and keep you posted on important developments.

For more information about how the state education budget affects local districts, visit
    www.edsource.org.

School Fuel Cycling for Schools Event Coming This Spring

The second annual Cycling for Schools event will take place at San Marin High on April 26, 2008.  Students and their families can join the bike rally to Stafford Lake, participate in the carnival, see a bike anti-gravity show, get a smoothie blended by pedal power, be active, learn about safety and wellness, and more.  This event was a great day of family fun last year, and promises to be even better this year!  Each NUSD school is encouraged to participate with an activity or game booth at the carnival.  There will be a meeting on January 16th at 7:00 in room 107 of the NUSD administration building for school representatives.  If you would like to help with this healthy and fun event, or for more information, please contact June Haugen (thehaugens@verizon.net or 898-4497).
