PRINCIPAL'S ADDRESS
Dr. Robert Vieth

On Friday, February 8, the Marin IJ ran a story about San Marin High School developing a code of conduct for parents at sporting events. There are a variety of reasons why the school will develop a code of conduct for parents. Evidently, we are the first high school in Marin County to do so, but there are codes of conduct at a variety of schools across the state and the nation. We will publish our code in this newsletter if it is finished in time for publication. It will be on our website as soon as it is available.

It is important to recognize the vast majority of parents that do a wonderful job at sporting events; most of the time it is joy for everyone to be at these events. Unfortunately, there have been about ten events where parents have been behaving badly, which required a coaching or administrative intervention with specific parents.
There are a variety of reasons for the code of conduct, and I will elaborate on a few of the reasons for establishing such a code. First, parent attacks on San Marin coaches have to stop. Coaching at the high school level pays next to nothing when you figure out the salary on a per hour basis, and coaches participate for the love of the game and for the wonderful relationship they develop with your sons and/or daughters on the playing field. When parents get in the face of coaches during and after games, it is simply not fun for anyone.

A positive consequence of the news article has been the response by students. Many students have shared just how embarrassing it is for all student participants when one or more parents behaves poorly, and how particularly embarrassing it is for the child of the parent who is out of line. For me, this is a major reason for the code of conduct.
A third reason for the code of conduct is to deter the amount of abuse officials take during games. Officials make mistakes and occasionally influence the outcome of the game, however yelling at the officials seldom improves the performance of the officials. On the rare occasion that officials may do such a poor job of officiating that an event is unsafe, parents have the obligation to follow-up with the A.D. or an administrator about what was observed. With the code of conduct in place, we are expecting that parents will not take the matter in their own hands, but bring back to the school administration to deal with.  Blaming officials for the outcome of the game sends the wrong message to students, and we hope to positively educate students participating in sports, not negatively educate them to blame others for outcomes.
Finally, the most important outcome of the code of conduct is for parents to help regulate other parents who start to act inappropriately.  There are many sporting events at the high school where no direct supervision from teachers or administrators takes place.  Ultimately, we hope to gain help from all responsible parents to change the culture of the few parents who are acting inappropriately at our sporting events so everyone acts responsibly and most of all, have fun at the events.

The administration hopes to have a parent meeting with all spring sport parents after we return from the February vacation break. I appreciate all the positive voices of parents regarding this issue. Working together we can make San Marin sporting events a positive and worthwhile experience for all concerned. Thanks to everyone for attending to this important matter.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS' ADDRESS

We are well into our second semester and our Counselors are in the midst of meeting with students to select courses for the 2008-2009 school year.  My hope is that you have had discussions with your child to carefully select courses that will best meet his/her academic goals.

Students who are planning to take an Advanced Placement or Honors course should be aware of NUSD Board Policy 6141.5 concerning the placement criteria for AP/Honors Courses.  The complete policy may be found on the Novato Unified School District website.  Some important criteria include:

To qualify a student must meet all three requirements
  1. STAR Test Results - Advanced level on California Content Standards or an equivalent standardized test in the Honors/AP Subject Area
    • English/Language Arts
    • Math
    • Social Science
  2. Overall Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) in Honors/AP Subject Area
    • 3.3 GPA - English/Language Arts
    • 3.3 GPA - Math Classes
    • 3.3 GPA - Social Science Classes
    • 3.3 GPA - Science Classes
  3. Assessment or Prerequisite Course(s)
    • For English 9, English 10, English 11, and English12, a common writing prompt and scoring rubric will be used.  A placement committee with readers from each high school will be formed to read and score the writing samples.  Each student's writing sample will be read and scored twice.  Eighth grade students will do their writing samples at their current sites.

It's been an extremely exciting basketball season for both girls and boys varsity teams. Our boy's team ended their playoff drought by knocking off host Terra Linda High School the final game of the regular season in dramatic fashion. Down by one point with two seconds left on the clock, center Mike Lopez drained two free throws to seal the victory and lock up the #2 seed in the MCAL playoffs. The boys play Marin Catholic on Friday February 15 at 7:30 pm at Redwood High gym. The winner plays for the MCAL championship the following evening. Get there early Friday night because the playoff games sell-out quickly.

The girl's varsity team upset Marin Catholic 51-49 in Kentfield on Tuesday night to earn a trip to the second round of the playoffs. Jessica Steinmetz and Jessica Restivo were huge factors ripping down rebounds and consistently holding Marin Catholic to one shot on each possession. It was a tremendous victory and it won't get any easier. The girl's play #1 seeded Justin Siena on Thursday night February 14 at 5:30 at Redwood High gym. Good luck girls! The winner plays for the championship at 5:30 on Saturday night at Redwood.

There is a school dance on Friday February 29, 2008 from 8-11 pm @ San Marin High gymnasium. Parents, please talk to your child about what they will be doing before and after the dance. Members of the Novato Police Department will be present at the dance to help ensure a safe environment for all of the students. Please approve and check your child's attire before he or she departs for the dance. The San Marin High School and NUSD dress code will be enforced at the dance. We may send students home to change if the administration feels that a student's attire is too inappropriate. Thank you very much and remember school is closed the week of February 18-22.

GREEN SCHOOL CAREER DAY PARENT PRESENTERS NEEDED!

San Marin High School and Next Generation are proud to announce the first San Marin High Green Week and Earth Day celebration!  Part of this event will be Green Career Day, held on Wednesday April 23, 2008. We would like to invite you to participate by giving a presentation highlighting your green career, including what it entails, how you became interested and trained, and how it benefits your community and the planet.

Green Career Day is an exciting event, which promotes careers, actions, and products that focus on sustainability and allows students a glimpse into potential jobs that can benefit themselves, their communities, and the environment. The morning will be filled with inspirational speakers from a variety of green and environmentally oriented professions, followed by a lunch for the speakers put on by San Marin PTSA.

We are looking for green professionals to speak in classes. Presentations should be visual, stimulating, and interactive.  The periods are 43 minutes long, and time should be left for a brief introduction and closing by the teacher.    Presentations will be during periods 2 through 4 (9:16-9:59, 10:04-10:47, 11:02-11:45), followed by lunch during period 5 (11:50-12:33). Ideally, we would like speakers to be available to speak all three periods, but it is not required.

If you are interested in participating in San Marin's Green Career Day, please respond by Friday, March 14 with time availability and any equipment that you will need for your presentation, including audio-visual.  Also include a brief summary of your presentation content.

Thank you very much!

    ATTENTION SOPHMORE PARENTS

This month we are working with the sophomore English classes on a career and interest search. The students are using our Bridges Transition program. This program allows students to explore different career pathways, giving them information on the education required, employment forecast, earning power, other related links, and interview with a person in the field and other useful information. The programs allow the students to set up a profile and save information. The Bridges program is accessible from home. Parents check out what is available for your student here at San Marin.

College Fair: College of Marin IVC Campus

Wednesday, March 19th: Health professions and Environmental Sustainability.

Dental assisting, nursing, medical assistant, emergency medical technician. An extraordinary collaboration of regional hospitals and learning institutions resulted in the  opening of a state-of-the-art emergency simulation facility that will provide vital training opportunities to healthcare students and emergency workers in the area. The Center directly addresses two of the primary challenges in getting more nurses into the field: a lack of trained nurse educators and too few clinical settings for students to practice necessary emergency skills. The other opportunity will be Environmental Sustainability. The Center for Sustainable Horticulture focuses on the education and training of landscape professionals and Marin residents in low-water use and environmentally friendly landscape design and maintenance. The Center is a growing community-wide collaboration, including COM's Biology and Environmental Landscape Program, Marin Conservation Corps, Marin's Water Districts, and Marin County's Workforce Investment Board among others.

Registrationand field trip permission forms are required for this event and are available in the College and Career Center. The students will be transported by bus to this event and lunch will be provided.

    FINANCIAL AID:

    · The FAFSA for the 2008-09 school years is now available on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You can download a worksheet on the website to help you with the process. You must first apply for a pin. The pin application can be found at www.pin.ed.gov. All students and parents should fill out these forms and submit them to the colleges they plan to attend. Many of the scholarships offered at the individual colleges require the FAFSA to be completed in order to be eligible. The CAL Grant GPA verification forms are also available in the CCC. All students going to a junior college, four colleges or university in California should fill out this form. It is a simple form and should be turned in the registrar at the counseling office when completed.

    · All scholarships are being updated on the Prep HQ web site and made available in the College and Career Center. Be sure to check weekly and apply to any that you may qualify for. Someone has to win these scholarships. Why not make it our students from San Marin.

    · Marin Education Fund is now coming to San Marin to meet with students and assist them with the Financial Aid process as well as present their scholarship opportunities. Sign-ups to meet with them are in the College and Career Center

    Upcoming Events:
College in Career Center in partnership with our School to Career Liaison will presenting monthly Career Panel in the Library at the lunch hour. A WORD FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE

Want to know what colleges and universities are looking for in students?

Find out by signing up for Prep HQ.  It's free and it takes 3 simple steps to register!

Prep HQ is a new feature to the San Marin High School's website where the counselors will post important information about colleges, scholarships, summer program opportunities and much more.  It is also students' personal web page to organize information as they figure out what they want to do after they graduate from high school.

    Getting Registered:

    1.  Log-on to your school's Prep HQ website.

Access Prep HQ via link on San Marin's website under Counseling or College & Career Center or visit https://www.prephq.com/?id=sanmarin

    2. Register by clicking "Click here to register" link (grey box on left)

Last name, student ID, email and parent's email will be required for registration.

    3. Create unique Username and Password to log-in.

Creating a user profile at the time of registration will be required for log-in access.

    FRESHMEN

We encourage freshmen to actively take part in a sport, school club, music or drama group, or community volunteer activity.  Remember that colleges would rather see real involvement on one or two activities than a loose connection to several activities.  Visit the Counseling Office and the College & Career Center for more information.  It's a great time to meet your counselor.

    SOPHOMORES

Next semester, sophomores and their parents will have an opportunity to meet with their counselor in an important and valuable part of the Guidance Program.  The sophomore counseling program provides for a half-hour personal guidance planning appointment for each sophomore and his/her parents or guardians.  These appointments, which will be scheduled from February through March, will give students and their parents an opportunity to review progress towards graduation, gather information about college and admission requirements, school-to-career programs, and plan the remaining two years of high school, while making sure that scheduled course work will enable the student to meet his/her goals.  We are exciting about this opportunity to support your student's future plans and look forward to meeting with you.

    JUNIORS

Start getting ready for your college admission standardized tests.  A few practices should help you decide whether you prefer the SAT I or ACT, and which SAT II subjects interest you.  Your PSAT or PLAN results can also be a guide to realistic planning.  When you receive your early test results, check the question and answer printout to see which sections gave you problems.  Practice with a parent or friend, or get a tutor to help you strengthen the sections win which you are weakest.

PSAT results will be available to students in early-January.  Counselors will review the score reports with each student and provide information on registering for spring SAT test dates.  Registration materials and sample tests are available in the College & Career Center.  Highly selective colleges require or recommend the SAT Subject exams, along with the SAT Reasoning exam for admission.  Students can take up to three SAT Subject exams per test date.  The SAT Subject exams cannot be taken on the same day as the SAT Reasoning exam.

GRIEF COUNSELING at San Marin High School:

Hospice by the Bay (formerly Hospice of Marin) will be leading a 4-6 week counseling group for students who have experienced the death of a loved one.  We will also be forming a group for students who are living with someone who is seriously ill.  Meetings will be during the school day on campus and are free. For more information, contact Guidance Counselor Annan Paterson at 897-2154 x122

    SCHOOL FUEL BULLETIN
    December 26, 2007

School Fuel is sending you the following budget news as part of our mission to keep you informed about what is happening in local education.

CALIFORNIA BUDGET DEFICITS LIKELY TO HIT NOVATO SCHOOLS

The latest state budget news indicates that California is facing a huge budget deficit.  According to a press release issued by the Governor's office
    (
http://gov.ca.gov/press-release/8379/), Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he will declare a fiscal emergency and call a special session of the Legislature because of California's darkening budget picture.  He wants to work with lawmakers to cut programs before shrinking tax revenue from the collapsed housing market leaves the state with a budget shortfall that could reach $14 billion over the next year-and-a-half.  The emergency declaration will be issued next month along with his proposed budget for the coming fiscal year.  The declaration triggers a special session and a constitutional requirement for the Legislature to reopen the current budget and cut costs or increase taxes within 45 days.  In the statement, Schwarzenegger said he wants to control the deficit with spending cuts.  According to press reports, each state department has been directed to find cuts of ten percent of their spending.

Because state funding is the primary source of operating funds for Novato schools, state budget cuts may have a serious impact on the money available for education programs locally.  The Novato school board trustees and administrators will be monitoring the situation closely as they develop their budget for next year.  However, there is no doubt that a significant cut in funds from the state could have a dramatic impact on the educational programs that the district provides.

School Fuel will continue to follow the local education budget situation, and keep you posted on important developments.

For more information about how the state education budget affects local districts, visit
    www.edsource.org.

School Fuel Cycling for Schools Event Coming This Spring

The second annual Cycling for Schools event will take place at San Marin High on April 26, 2008.  Students and their families can join the bike rally to Stafford Lake, participate in the carnival, see a bike anti-gravity show, get a smoothie blended by pedal power, be active, learn about safety and wellness, and more.  This event was a great day of family fun last year, and promises to be even better this year!  Each NUSD school is encouraged to participate with an activity or game booth at the carnival.  There will be a meeting on January 16th at 7:00 in room 107 of the NUSD administration building for school representatives.  If you would like to help with this healthy and fun event, or for more information, please contact June Haugen (thehaugens@verizon.net or 898-4497).
