Gary Gates Pasta Dinner March 1st

 
The annual pasta dinner for the Gary Gates Memorial Foundation will be held at Our Lady Of Loretto on March 1 from 5:30 - 11PM. The evening includes dinner, silent and live auctions and a dessert auction as well as dancing to the music of DJ Frank Sarubbi.  Tickets are still just $15 and can be purchased at the front office at San Marin High School.
 
TalentShowThe field at San Marin is the only lighted high school softball field In Marin County and has been used to host both MCAL and MCS playoff games.  The permanent bleachers are now in place.  Proceeds from the evening will help with completion of landscaping and handicapped access areas.

NUSD Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5th, evening
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS 

1. San Marin Sweeps the Marin County PTSA writing contest at the high school level.  Finalists include:  Cory Gilpin, Maddy Richter, Caitlin Simmons, Michael Scott and Winner Jocelyn Anderson.  Her work will be submitted to a statewide competition.

2. Local poet Terry Glass visited the Creative Writing class to help students with poetry recitation.

3. San Marin students will participate in the Poetry Out Loud competition for the first time.  January 16-19 students will recite poetry in room 404 and the student center where they will be judged on voice, fluidity, inflection, movement.  Students must have their poems memorized.  School winner earns a $50 prize and is eligible for the county-wide competition.  Winners can go on to state and eventually national competition in Washington D.C. where the winner will receive $20,000.

4. English students will be participating in the Laws of Life essay contest sponsored by Rotary Club of Novto Sunrise

5. Our department is working on revising our curriculum maps at each grade level as well as creating and revising our common assessments to ensure that San Marin has the most rigorous English program in the county. Our commitment to PLCs and our work with the CSU system means our students will be prepared to succeed at the University level.

6. Creative Writer Jack Leask published his poem "Creativity" in the Ned Gazette, a newspaper in Colorado.

SPRING MUSICAL 'THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE' COMING in March

 
The San Marin Music Department's Spring Musical:
  "Thoroughly Modern Millie" will be held two weekends -- March 7-9 and March 14-16.  Both the Friday and Saturday shows will open at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.  Tickets go on sale the week of February 25!!  So mark your calendars and join us for another entertaining musical theater production under the direction of Emily Gates!

Dear San Marin Parents:

           

It's that time of year again for the San Marin Senior Fashion Show on March 28th at 7PM in the San Marin gym.   The fashion show is an event that brings the entire school community together to celebrate the senior class, bid on auction items, see the hottest clothing of the season and eat a fantastic dinner.  This event is open to the entire San Marin community not just senior parents and we would love to see you there!  Tickets will be available in the front office beginning two weeks prior to the event.  Proceeds from the event benefit the senior class and are used to fund their senior ball.  As well, money has been donated back to San Marin and to various non-profit organizations.

 

The seniors are also looking for any donations items.  If you have something that you would like to donate or have any questions about doing so please contact our leadership teacher Ryan Fedoroff.  Thanks for always being so supportive!

Penguin EmpireROBOTICS CLUB NEWS
 
San Marin Robotics Club Penguin Empire Team  completed their first ever FRC  'Aurora' Robot after many days of hardwork after school (thanks to Auto Shop for allowing us to use their shop and tools and for the practice field at the library during the break). 
 
The robot is being shipped today to be inspected and ready for the March 20 FRC comptition at UC Davis.
 
The team also created a website and create a
3-D Animation for  competition.

 San Marin Robotics Club made waves and headlines
 
The Club just entered into the prestigeous First Robotics Competition (2100
teams from the world participating)
and will be working sever days a week for the next 6 weeks before their robot is shipped for inpsection and then the competition  
    (Working into the Nights)              starts in UC Davis late March.

2008 Lenaea State Drama Competition

 

02/04/08   San Marin High brings home the silver, bronze medal and a most improved medal in the State Drama competition.

 

The San Marin Advanced Drama Team brought home many awards from this year's Lenaea State Drama Competition at Sacramento State this last weekend. 

 

San Marin was one of 70 schools that participated  from the Pacific West Coast.  This is the largest high School  drama competition in North America.   

 

Keith White brought home a silver  medal for his wonderful song from The Last Five Years.  He entertained  the entire Award ceremony (1500 people) with his song.  Julia Gorman got a most improved performance for her song from the same play.  Haley McFadden won a silver medal for her very moving monologue from Black Angel, Laila Banejad won the bronze medal for her monologue from Second Class.  Kyla Ainsworth and Chris Zander, wowed the responders and won a silver medal with their tense scene from the Glass Menagerie.  Rose Oser and Christian Stranne took on a challenging scene from a new play,  Months on End  and scored a Bronze Medal. 

 

The school also performed a very clever sketch comedy, Hard Candy.  The Cast: Michael Stephan, Mace Baratta, Alisha Hodges, Pete Carroll, Chelsea Cymrot, Ryan Rohtla, Akiko Aspillaga, Erik Lindberg-Hernandez, Zac Mead, Kaela Lenhart and Haley McFadden were complimented by the judges for their great comic timing and ensemble work.

The Diary of Anne Frank, performed by two excellent casts, was a huge success. The Sunday matinee performance was enhanced by Hans Angress with his spell binding talk after the play. Mr. Angress had previously met with the Advanced Drama students during one of their classes to give them background on his experience during the Holocaust and about his school mate, Anne Frank, at the Jewish Lyceum School before they both went into hiding. He returned for one of the final rehearsals to help the actors fine turn their performances. We are grateful to Mr. Angress for his heartfelt conversations and all the help he provided the students.   We also want to thank all of the parents who helped with the production. 

 
FEBRUARY DRAMA NEWS

The Advanced Drama class took a field trip to see their fellow classmate, Ryan Rohtla, perform in the ACT youth theatre play Broken Wings on which he has been working since last summer. It was wonderful for them to support Ryan and to see the possibilities available to those interested in expanding their theater experience.

The Beginning Drama students have begun working on their holiday plays. They are always a lot of fun and are performed for students from nearby elementary schools.
 

In preparation for the Lenaea competition, the Advanced Drama students have selected Hard Candy as the one act play they will perform at the competition. Look for a Café Theater on January 29 if you would like to see the play

Louise Gould, a student at Dominican University, is student teaching this semester in Denise Mozzetti's Drawing and Painting class first period, and Christine Chu's fourth period Art and Design class.

 

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (A.P.)

Ms. Mozzetti (affectionately referred to as Mizmo) is teaching an A.P. art class

first period, and this semester is adding to that a pre-A.P. class for those wanting to go into A.P. art next year.

 

"REFLECTIONS"

There were over 30 entries from San Marin's art department in the "Reflections" - 2007-2008 program.  This year's theme is "I can make a difference by.."  A gallery showing was held Friday, January 11th at the school district office.  Check out the PTA website for the "Reflections Gallery" at www.pta.org or www.capta.org. 

 

AWARDS

We had quite a few winners in both categories- 2-D visual art and photography.  Elaine Murphy (2-D) and Branden Healen (photography) will go on to the state competition in Sacramento.  Stay tuned-

KnittingSCARVES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
 
Carol England, Dept. Chair, Special Education is knitting scarf after scarf after scarf. Why, you ask is she doing this? Well, she is knitting all these scarves to raise money for students in the Special Education Dept. who will be attending college in the fall. Her goal is to raise $2000!!
 
Her scarves are made of a variety of yarns. Many of the yarns have been sent to her by a friend in Mulheim, Germany. The scarves can be seen in the "mini scarf botique" in the Resource Center located in room 603.  Prices range from $32.50 to $55 and come in a variety of colors.

    The Early Bridge Program (a collaboarion between College of Marin IVC campus and San Marin High School) is underway.
     
    Students have met with the College of Marin Counselor and picked up registration information.
    The course registration can be turned in to Mrs. Cunnie at the College and Career Center.

    · Santa Rosa Junior College will be at San Marin on February 14th at 10:10 in the College and Career Center to speak about the registration process, testing and scholarship.
    · College of Marin will be at San Marin on  March 11th at 9:00 in the Library to speak to the students about the registration process, testing and scholarship.

    Both Junior colleges this year will be offering placement testing at San Marin. Times and dates will be posted on the eNews and PrepHQ. You will be able to sign up for these events on PrepHQ

    WACAC COLLEGE PREVIEW FAIR

    Thursday, April 23rd

    Western Association for College Admission Counseling will be hosting a college fair at Dominican College the evening of April 23rd. There will be more than 100 colleges attending and distributing information about their programs. There will also be workshops offered with topics pertaining to the college selection process. Informational postcards will be mailed to your home in the Spring.

    ATTENTION SOPHMORE PARENTS

    This month we are working with the sophomore English classes on a career and interest search. The students are using our Bridges Transition program. This program allows students to explore different career pathways, giving them information on the education required, employment forecast, earning power, other related links, and interview with a person in the field and other useful information. The programs allow the students to set up a profile and save information. The Bridges program is accessible from home. Parents check out what is available for your student here at San Marin.

    ATTENTION ALL PARENTS
    In April of this year we will be conducting a "Green Career Day", Wednesday, April 23rd. The students will be hearing from speakers who are in environmentally friendly careers. We are in need of speakers for this day. If you are involved in an environmentally sensitive career or know of anyone who is and would like to participate in this great day please contact Francine Cunnie at
    fcunnie@nusd.org or by phone at 898-2121 ext 127. We are hoping to have the speakers in the morning before lunch. The PTSA will be hosting a lunch after the speakers present.

    CAREER PANEL LUNCH PRESENTATIONS

    From January to May the College and Career Center in partnership with the School to Career Liaison will be offering students the opportunity to hear and speak with professionals in their designated careers. Each month will have a different career cluster focus.

    · February, Careers in Multi Media and Business
    · March, Careers in the Health Industry
    · April, Ecological Responsible "Green Careers"
    · May, Careers in the Trade Industry

    The panels will speak during the lunch hour in the library. Students will be able to speak with panel speakers afterwards with questions in their career focus. Dates will be announced and sign ups will be taken through PrepHQ and in the Career Center.

    College Fair: College of Marin IVC Campus

    Wednesday, March 19th: Health professions and Environmental Sustainability.

    Dental assisting, nursing, medical assistant, emergency medical technician. An extraordinary collaboration of regional hospitals and learning institutions resulted in the  opening of a state-of-the-art emergency simulation facility that will provide vital training opportunities to healthcare students and emergency workers in the area. The Center directly addresses two of the primary challenges in getting more nurses into the field: a lack of trained nurse educators and too few clinical settings for students to practice necessary emergency skills. The other opportunity will be Environmental Sustainability. The Center for Sustainable Horticulture focuses on the education and training of landscape professionals and Marin residents in low-water use and environmentally friendly landscape design and maintenance. The Center is a growing community-wide collaboration, including COM's Biology and Environmental Landscape Program, Marin Conservation Corps, Marin's Water Districts, and Marin County's Workforce Investment Board among others. 

    Registrationand field trip permission forms are required for this event and are available in the College and Career Center. The students will be transported by bus to this event and lunch will be provided.

    FINANCIAL AID:

    · The FAFSA for the 2008-09 school years is now available on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You can download a worksheet on the website to help you with the process. You must first apply for a pin. The pin application can be found at www.pin.ed.gov. All students and parents should fill out these forms and submit them to the colleges they plan to attend. Many of the scholarships offered at the individual colleges require the FAFSA to be completed in order to be eligible. The CAL Grant GPA verification forms are also available in the CCC. All students going to a junior college, four colleges or university in California should fill out this form. It is a simple form and should be turned in the registrar at the counseling office when completed.
     
    · All scholarships are being updated on the Prep HQ web site and made available in the College and Career Center. Be sure to check weekly and apply to any that you may qualify for. Someone has to win these scholarships. Why not make it our students from San Marin.

    · Marin Education Fund is now coming to San Marin to meet with students and assist them with the Financial Aid process as well as present their scholarship opportunities. Sign-ups to meet with them are in the College and Career Center

    College in Career Center in partnership with our School to Career Liaison will presenting monthly Career Panel in the Library at the lunch hour. Each month they will cover different career clusters and have a panel of speakers and presentations. Look for more information on the San Marin website, PrepHQ and E-News. In January the panel will be from the health professions, February Public Safety, March Multi Media and Film and May Arts and Trades Panel.     College of Marin Career Days

    College of Marin presents programs offered at the College as well as the career opportunities available through skills acquired through these programs. It is a free event for the students and they are transported to and from school and given lunch. If they are interested in the careers presented or the programs at College of Marin this is a great opportunity to explore. Registration is required and parent permission to attend.

    WORK PERMITS
    By California State Law, all students under the age of 18 are required to have a work permit for after-school and weekend jobs.  Permits may be obtained in the CCRC.

    During the school year, students may work a limited number of hours, determined by their age.   A parent's signature is required on the application for a work permit before the permit is issued.  A student must keep a 2.0 or higher GPA to work.

    Prep HQ is a new feature to the San Marin High School's website where the counselors will post important information about colleges, scholarships, summer program opportunities and much more.  It is also students' personal web page to organize information as they figure out what they want to do after they graduate from high school.

    FRESHMEN

    We encourage freshmen to actively take part in a sport, school club, music or drama group, or community volunteer activity.  Remember that colleges would rather see real involvement on one or two activities than a loose connection to several activities.  Visit the Counseling Office and the College & Career Center for more information.  It's a great time to meet your counselor.

     

    SOPHOMORES

    Next semester, sophomores and their parents will have an opportunity to meet with their counselor in an important and valuable part of the Guidance Program.  The sophomore counseling program provides for a half-hour personal guidance planning appointment for each sophomore and his/her parents or guardians.  These appointments, which will be scheduled from February through March, will give students and their parents an opportunity to review progress towards graduation, gather information about college and admission requirements, school-to-career programs, and plan the remaining two years of high school, while making sure that scheduled course work will enable the student to meet his/her goals.  We are exciting about this opportunity to support your student's future plans and look forward to meeting with you.

     

    JUNIORS

    Start getting ready for your college admission standardized tests.  A few practices should help you decide whether you prefer the SAT I or ACT, and which SAT II subjects interest you.  Your PSAT or PLAN results can also be a guide to realistic planning.  When you receive your early test results, check the question and answer printout to see which sections gave you problems.  Practice with a parent or friend, or get a tutor to help you strengthen the sections win which you are weakest.

     

    PSAT results will be available to students in early-January.  Counselors will review the score reports with each student and provide information on registering for spring SAT test dates.  Registration materials and sample tests are available in the College & Career Center.  Highly selective colleges require or recommend the SAT Subject exams, along with the SAT Reasoning exam for admission.  Students can take up to three SAT Subject exams per test date.  The SAT Subject exams cannot be taken on the same day as the SAT Reasoning exam. 

     

    GRIEF COUNSELING at San Marin High School:

    Hospice by the Bay (formerly Hospice of Marin) will be leading a 4-6 week counseling group for students who have experienced the death of a loved one.  We will also be forming a group for students who are living with someone who is seriously ill.  Meetings will be during the school day on campus and are free.     Looking for a support group for your teen with Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis?

     

    My daughter was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in April 2007. The gastroenterologist gave us the diagnosis after a colonoscopy. All she said was 1) ulcerative colitis is not as bad as Crohn's Disease; 2) Take this prescription;3) she would see us in a month. That's all. No additional information.

     

    My husband and I were left to surf the internet for information about this diagnosis that we had only thought applied to old people.

     

    Inflammatory Bowel Disease is tough on anyone but harder on teens. Its embarrassing to discuss and they can loose their freedom because the intense pain and bathroom trips, so I am looking to start a support group for parents and teens since we have not found one here in Marin County.

     

    We are currently attending a support group at Cal-Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco sponsored by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (www.ccfa.org), however, it is only attended by adults over 30 (not alot in common with a teenager).

    This is a lively evening of fun for students, parents, teachers and visitors!
    NUSD student musicians will perform live music for attendees and once again,
    California Grill & Rotisserie and Villa Roma Sourdough Pizza Company

    have generously agreed to provide a variety of delicious appetizers for the event. 
    For those who can't make opening night, regular gallery hours for the show will be
    March 8, 9, and 13-16: Thursdays and Fridays from 4 to 7pm, Saturdays and Sundays from Noon to 4pm.

    ·Northbay ArtWorks will have two workshops for students wanting assistance either starting or completing their individual pieces.  The workshops will be at Northbay ArtWorks and run by art instructor, Stephanie Hart. 
    Workshop dates are Friday, February 1 and Friday, February 8 from 6pm-8pm. 
    The workshops are free to students who bring their own materials, otherwise there will be a $10 materials fee. 

    Student submissions of creative work for exhibit will be due immediately after the February break,
    no later than Wednesday, February 27

    Student creative work and permission form may either be dropped of in school front offices
    or at Northbay ArtWorks.  Students decide whether they would like to sell their pieces to benefit School Fuel
    or retrieve them after the show to keep for themselves.  There is no obligation to sell any artwork,
    as our main objective is to draw attention to the creativity and talent of our students and the importance
    of artistic outlets and art education for our kids. 

    Artwork for exhibit can include, but is not limited to fine art, poetry and/or creative writing, sculpture, photography and video productions. (Students must provide equipment for video productions, which will be locked up after each gallery showing.)

    SCHOOL FUEL BULLETIN

    School Fuel is sending you the following budget news as part of our mission to keep you informed about what is happening in local education. 

    CALIFORNIA BUDGET DEFICITS LIKELY TO HIT NOVATO SCHOOLS

    The latest state budget news indicates that California is facing a huge budget deficit.  According to a press release issued by the Governor's office
    (
    http://gov.ca.gov/press-release/8379/), Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he will declare a fiscal emergency and call a special session of the Legislature because of California's darkening budget picture.  He wants to work with lawmakers to cut programs before shrinking tax revenue from the collapsed housing market leaves the state with a budget shortfall that could reach $14 billion over the next year-and-a-half.  The emergency declaration will be issued next month along with his proposed budget for the coming fiscal year.  The declaration triggers a special session and a constitutional requirement for the Legislature to reopen the current budget and cut costs or increase taxes within 45 days.  In the statement, Schwarzenegger said he wants to control the deficit with spending cuts.  According to press reports, each state department has been directed to find cuts of ten percent of their spending. 

    Because state funding is the primary source of operating funds for Novato schools, state budget cuts may have a serious impact on the money available for education programs locally.  The Novato school board trustees and administrators will be monitoring the situation closely as they develop their budget for next year.  However, there is no doubt that a significant cut in funds from the state could have a dramatic impact on the educational programs that the district provides.

    School Fuel Cycling for Schools Event Coming This Spring

    The second annual Cycling for Schools event will take place at San Marin High on April 26, 2008.  Students and their families can join the bike rally to Stafford Lake, participate in the carnival, see a bike anti-gravity show, get a smoothie blended by pedal power, be active, learn about safety and wellness, and more.  This event was a great day of family fun last year, and promises to be even better this year!  Each NUSD school is encouraged to participate with an activity or game booth at the carnival.  There will be a meeting on January 16th at 7:00 in room 107 of the NUSD administration building for school representatives.  If you would like to help with this healthy and fun event, or for more information, please contact June Haugen (thehaugens@verizon.net or 898-4497).

    The Novato History Museum is looking for docents to
    participate in the annual spring tours for ""Our Novato Third Graders."

    If you love history and are interested in learning about the town that you live in, please consider donating a small portion of your time to share with the children of Novato.....Novato history is part of NUSD's third grade curriculum.

    Some of you may even have accompanied your child on this field trip when they were in the third grade. The beauty of this program for docents is that NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED. You will be trained with materials and by shadowing one of our "seasoned docents" and you will docent only when YOU feel comfortable.

    The Third Grade program takes place from March until the week before school closes for the year in June.

    Please attend a Docent Orientation Meeting to be held on Tuesday, March 4th at 10am. at Druid's Hall.

    INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS

     

    What is a Law of Life?  Can you think about a time in your life when a difficulty or a challenge taught you an important lesson?  Will that lesson help you to avoid that same problem in the future?  The lesson you learned is sometimes referred to as a "Law of Life."  Laws of Life are expressed in common sayings such as: "Honesty is the best policy," or "Haste makes waste," or "Lost time is never found again."  Laws of Life may often become the central themes of books or movies.  Laws of Life become important because they can help you to avoid future mistakes and problems.

     

    For this year's contest, you are asked to think and write about some adult who has experienced a Law of Life.  What problem did that adult face, and how did he or she overcome it.  The adult could be a personal acquaintance such as your teacher, your parent or guardian, a neighbor, and so forth.  The adult could also be a famous person whom you have never met but about whom you have read.  Can you summarize that Law of Life in a short saying?  How did that adult's Law of Life affect you?  When other people read your essay, could it help them to lead better lives? 

     

    Before submitting your essay to your English teacher, print it on standard size paper.  The essay should be about 500 words and 1-1/2 pages in length.  Staple a contest Entry Form to your essay before you give it to your teacher.  Be sure to have your parent's or guardian's signature on it.  An Entry Form is on the reverse side of this page.  You have about one month for this essay.  Your English teacher will tell you when to submit it..

     

    Winners will be chosen to receive cash prizes of $300 for 1st Place, $200 for 2nd Place, and $100 for 3rd Place.  Middle School students' essays will be judged separately from High School students' essays.  Watch for more information about an Awards Ceremony scheduled for the evening of April 24 to which the winners, their teachers, parents, and friends will be invited.
