Since 2008, St. Anthony Family Practice residents have participated in a required rotation through our clinic. Rotation through Eden Clinic is meant to enhance their rotation in obstetrics and community medicine. St. Anthony is one of two Christian family residency programs in Oklahoma.
On at least two Thursday mornings per month, residents train under me (pictured above) in STI clinic and learn how to do obstetrical ultrasound. My focus is always to educate them on what crisis pregnancy work is about, the truth about abortion, and to encourage them to use their power of influence as a Christian doctor for good. Many residents report that they feel invigorated after a visit to our clinic; it reminds them of the reasons they went into medicine in the first place!
There is a stronger need than ever for pro-life doctors to be engaged in crisis pregnancy ministry. More centers are turning "medical" and physicians can provide valuable insight into current standards of practice and lend credibility to its service as a medical clinic to the community. Participating physicians need to be well-versed in what abortion is and what it does to those who have been affected by it. Unfortunately, most medical students, residents and practicing physicians do not know simple facts about abortion because it is such a "red button" topic that it is scarcely talked about in medical education. Eden Clinic is filling in the gap by training new generations of doctors to engage in pro-life work in their communities.
Most physicians are ethically pro-life, but there is a strong push by pro-choice organizations to force our medical students and residents into training to do abortion. The reason for this is twofold: 1) The pro-choice community knows abortionists are not well-respected by their peers and this makes it hard to recruit them to do abortions, and 2) They know that the current number of practicing physicians who do abortion is dwindling at a rapid pace. We know unplanned pregnancy is not going away. Now is the time to build up physicians and give them opportunity to join in the fight for life. Clinics like Eden give residents and medical students that chance.
Please pray for these young physicians who spend time at the Eden Clinic. Pray for God to motivate them to be a part of a crisis pregnancy center wherever they end up in practice. Pray for them to be bold in speaking truth into the lives of their patients and to point always to Christ, the Great Physician.
