NEA Report Shows Declining Attendance...
|

Have you been noticing a growing number of empty seats at classical
concerts in recent years? Have you attended a recent gallery opening
where there was actually enough Champagne and hors d'oeuvres to go
around -- and perhaps even some to take home?
If so, your imagination isn't playing tricks on you.
A new report released by the National Endowment for the Arts said
that the number of American adults attending arts and cultural events
has sunk to its lowest level since 1982, which was when the NEA began
conducting the poll.
The study, which was organized in partnership with the Census
Bureau, noted that the downward trend was at least partially due to the
deteriorating economic conditions of the last two years, including the
rise in the price of gasoline and an overall drop in consumer spending. Read More: HERE

SDRACC- The Advocacy Arm of SDPAL

Dear Arts and Culture Colleagues, Join for
2010!
You know that
arts and culture matter. Time and time again, our community has made the case to
local leaders that an investment in arts and culture is important for a strong
San Diego. Last year, the Coalition's volunteer members worked diligently to
save arts and culture funding from drastic budget cuts, and we came together
against the elimination of the Visual Arts and Performing Arts programs in the
San Diego Unified School District. Your membership in the Coalition is more
important than ever with ongoing budget cuts at all levels of local government
and the upcoming 2010 elections. Today we are asking that all arts and culture
organizations and supporters come together again to renew their commitment to
advocacy.
The Coalition
make it easy for you to take part in the advocacy by sending you email action
alerts, news, updates and more. The Coalition website will also launch this year
as your newest resource. Collectively, we are a strong voice and your voice is
needed today. Renew your membership or become a first time member online or mail in a check. Thank you for
your past support and I look forward to working with you to ensure arts and
culture remain a top priority in San Diego. Make a difference and sign up HERE

Victoria Hamilton Named Among National Arts Sector's 25 Most Influential Leaders

"As a society, we like to list things very much, though it almost
seems out of place to list the most powerful leaders in the nonprofit

Which Way is Arts Participation Headed?
|
 By Jim Tune
The trend lines of the new National Endowment for the Arts Survey of Public Participation
in the Arts are not encouraging. Although 35 percent of all U.S. adults
- some 78 million Americans - attended an art museum or live arts
performance in the 12 months ending May 2008, those numbers, the report
says, are relatively lower than in previous years. The survey also
reports that arts audiences are generally older.
Two questions came to mind when reading this report: 1) is this
something we need to worry about here in the Central Puget Sound region
and 2) what can we do to prevent or reverse a decline? Read More: HERE

San Diego Theatre Critics Circle UPDATE
|

San Diego critics honor top
theatrical achievements of 2009
Old Globe's "Cyrano," Playhouse's "Bonnie
& Clyde," "Creditors" among top honorees
SAN DIEGO ----
Productions by the Old Globe Theatre and La Jolla Playhouse dominated as the
San Diego Theatre Critics Circle on Jan. 25, 2010, presented the eighth annual
Craig Noel Awards for Theatrical Excellence, honoring the best stage work of
2009.
The ceremony was dedicated to Noel,
the 94-year-old founding director of the Old Globe. He's in frail health and,
for the first time since the awards were renamed in his honor in 2002, was
unable to attend his namesake awards. They were given out at the Museum of
Contemporary Art, San Diego, in La Jolla, at a ceremony attended by about 470
members of the theater community and their supporters.
"Although the troubled
economy affected some of the programming choices local theaters made in 2009,
critics association members were pleased to see risk-taking plays and several
new musicals produced at San Diego theaters, both large and small," said
Pam Kragen, president of the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle.
Nine
San Diego County professional and semi-professional theater companies took home
a total of 37 awards, given in 27 categories, including a new one: Outstanding
Young Artist. Also, the critics presented three special awards. Topping the
winners' list was the Playhouse's world premiere of "Bonnie & Clyde," which
took five awards in the musical categories: new musical, direction, musical
direction, female lead performance and female featured performance.

The San Diego
Performing Arts League
Announces New CEO
San
Diego, CA.--The Board of Directors of the San Diego
Performing Arts League has named Kevin Chaisson as Chief Executive Officer.
Kevin has served on the Board of Directors since 2004. For the
past 2 years he has been Board President and acting Executive Director. During
this time Kevin reorganized the finances and services of the organization
balancing the budget for the first time in over 8 years. Along with a dedicated
board, he was able to retire over $160K of debt and bring the payables up to
date avoiding closure of the League. In June of 2009, Mr. Chaisson would be
'termed out' and the League Board felt that action must be taken in order to
continue the work of the San Diego Performing Arts League.
Carmen DeBello former Executive Director of Camarada and current
Arts Promoter and Manager was voted Board President. She leads a board of 6:
Jeff Bushnell, businessman, Barbara Maisel, founding member of ACT San Diego,
Alex Scollon, Managing Director - New Village Arts, Judy Berman Silbert,
ArtWalk San Diego, and Ron Tov,
Architect.
Ms DeBello said, "Kevin has worked endless hours to rejuvenate The
League and bring to it services that the community desperately needs. A new
What's Playing guide, web site, ticketing services and cooperative marketing
program are all under way with his leadership and direction. The Board felt
that this work needed to continue as we are very close to building a
sustainable fiscal model for the League"
Alex Scollon was impressed with Kevin's vision for a 'county wide'
League with service branches in North
& East County.
"All too often the League has centered its focus in the City of San Diego and there is tremendous growth in the arts in North County
particularly. Focusing on this growth will help participation in the arts
everywhere!"
Mr Chaisson expressed an interest in seeing that the League be
seen as a service provider and conduit for collaboration among arts groups. "We
can benefit from great economies of scale by centralizing services like: box
office, accounting, web development and hosting, cooperative ad sales, group mailings,
printing and insurance services. Every 501c3 has to use these services and pay
for them. The League can facilitate a better deal for everyone. And with
shrinking donation dollars we must consolidate operating expenses."
There will be a meeting on the membership announced soon and Mr
Chaisson along with the Board will outline a 5 year plan.
For more information contact The San Diego Performing Arts League
at sdpal@sdpal.com
or call Mr Chaisson at 619-602-9333 or Ms DeBello at 619-210-5629.

A Response to "The Best Plays of 2009"
|
 Publication: Gay Lesbian Times
Author: Jean Lowerison
Publish Date: Dec 31, 2009

Response: Tony Robin Dear
Editor,
The end of year "best
of" lists are always a treat and good fodder for water cooler (or in this era-
Facebook or Twitter) bantering. As an arts lover, supporter and advocate, I pay
special attention to theater, music and dance wrap-ups. With great respect and
gratitude to the talent and enthusiasm of theater critic Jean Lowerison (thanks
for everything Jean!), I was disappointed to see that three of her top ten picks
were shows from Los Angeles. San Diego is a strong and growing theater town and
local productions with extraordinary talent are presented by theater artists and
playwrights every week. To say that 30% of the best shows were seen in LA just
adds to the perception that San Diego is not first rate. This is just not
true!
The work on San Diego
stages this year has been truly extraordinary and kudos to all who continue to
produce and present work that inspires, entertains and engages.
Personally, I'd have
a hard time narrowing my favorites to just 10. But if you want to see them, I
just might post them on Facebook!
Curtain up and keep
the arts coverage coming!
Thanks.
