To the Point:

In terms of barriers to change, there is not a single rural community that wouldn't benefit from a few timely deaths.
 - Jim Krile, the Blandin Foundation

We've long believed that when the rate of change inside an institution becomes slower than the rate of change outside, the end is in sight. The only question is when.
 - Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric

The ultimate curse is to be a passenger on a large ship, to know that the ship is going to sink, to know precisely what to do to prevent it, and to realize that no one will listen.
 - Myron Tribus, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Without a clear vision and an explicit set of goals, all decisions are  based on politics.
 - Pete Ranstad, Toro

The New Nominating Committee
by John Cress, Lead Pastor, Denver First Adventist Church

Traditionally Adventist churches use the nominating committee process to recruit volunteers for the church's ministries. Others may have a ministry committee that recruits all year long.

At Denver First, we have developed several ways of recruiting volunteers for church and community ministries.

First, I empower leaders to recruit volunteers without having to go through a committee. If I trust leaders to lead, then I should trust them to make good decisions about who they want on their team.

discovery centerSecond, I've created the Discovery Center. The Discovery Center is an open room right off the lobby with walls of slat material so plastic holders and signs can be displayed easily. It's designed to give potential volunteers the direction they need to be part of Denver First's mission to "Share Christ and Create Disciples."

In the Discovery Center are things to encourage volunteers to get involved, such as:
  • Descriptions of current ministry opportunities in the church and community - external and internal - with contact information so an interested person can contact the leader of the ministry directly.
  • A Job Description Notebook for all ministry positions in the church.
  • Spiritual gifts discovery inventories for those who would like some help identifying their gifts.
  • Literature to assist those who wish to share Christ and create disciples.
  • CDs of past sermons (for a suggested donation).
  • Information on events or training opportunities at Denver First and other places.
Discovery Center volunteers keep material up-to-date, staff it on Sabbath morning and other designated times, answer questions, help in recruitment, and guide people to relevant information.

The Discovery Center is the ministry hub of Denver First. It reminds people every time they walk through the church lobby that this is an active church, one in which ministry to others is the reason for our existence.

Reading for Pastors
by Best Practices Editor, Loren Seibold

The president-elect and the faithful:
From Time: Where will he go to church, and why?
From Newsweek: Why are some Christians calling him the Antichrist?

Another major motion picture with a Christian theme,
The Christmas Cottage, starring Peter O'Toole and (of all people) Chris Elliott. It's directed by painter Thomas Kinkade, and is slightly autobiographical. Here's a review of it from Christianity Today.

On the explosion of high-quality, Hollywood produced Christian movies:
Can Jesus Save Hollywood?

While we're at it, a movie concordance, for finding that perfect, relevant, contemporary sermon illustration and a source of illustrative movie clips.

The right foods can cure.
Resources, Ideas and Events

  • From the NAD year-end meetings, important information about your salary: Based on the CPI back in June, NAD treasurers had proposed a 5% cost-of-living adjustment, effective July 2009.  As the economic conditioned worsened, the proposal was backed off to 2.5%. When presented to the NAD committee at the year-end meetings, though, the 2.5% increase was overwhelmingly defeated. Reasons included the current economic situation, the tithe expectations in most conferences, the impact of an increase on church schools, and the notion of showing solidarity with the many people in our churches who have lost jobs, houses, etc. An alternative proposal for a 1.25% adjustment was floated, but in the end the committee voted to give us no COL increase in 2009. It passed by a vote of 100 to 66.
  • The website for the Andrews University Worship & Music Conference has been updated for the 2009 event. As I mentioned a while back, it is one of the conferences for pastors I won't miss - excellent. It's $95 per person, but it goes down if you bring a group or if you're a student. It's worth it.
  • For those of you on the West Coast, an option: Vervent is joining with the Southern California Conference in sponsoring the West Coast Worship Conference, March 5-7, 2009 at the Adventist Media Center in Simi Valley, CA.  All the information and registration can be found at www.westcoastworshipconference.com.  This is a West Coast version of the Andrews Worship Conference.
  • Health Summit Orlando, 2009 will be bigger than ever.  Several new seminars will be offered.  This annual health certification training program will be held January 30 - February 7, 2009 and will present featured speakers Jose Rojas, and Samuel DeShay.  A special "Festival of Health" evening program will feature Pastor Derek Morris and a heath expert speaking each evening.  Register now to save your space. Go to www.nadhealthsummit.com for more information.
