We're Having a Heat Wave!
Right now, all 92 Indiana counties are experiencing drought. Farmers, including our Market vendors, are scrambling to water, irrigate, and protect their crops from the heat and scorching sun. Although the storms last Friday and showers on Saturday were welcome (excepting the damage and power outages), they did not bring nearly enough relief and no more rain is expected any time soon. Climatologists say to expect most of July to be warmer and drier than average.
So, what does that mean for the Market? - Although many crops are coming to Market early this year, we may see some vendors unable to bring certain items. The early warm-up and subsequent frost took a toll on the apple orchards in some parts of the state and current conditions may take a toll on other produce.
- When you come to the Market, make sure you protect yourself from the sun by wearing hats and using sun screen on yourself, and on your little ones.
- Stay hydrated!!! That goes for dogs and children especially! Three Dog Bakery has a water bowl they keep filled for pets, and numerous vendors have bottled water, or other cold refreshing beverages for sale like lemonade, iced tea, iced coffee, bottled juice, water kefir, etc.
- Bring a cooler if you are planning to purchase items that need to stay cold. Thermal bags with ice packs are a good option too.
- And let the vendors know you appreciate all they are doing out in their fields and hoop houses to bring you the best produce possible at the Market every week. They are our agricultural heroes!!!

Vote for the BRFM at Indy A-List!
It's that time of year again -- time to vote on the Indy A-List nominees. There are eighteen different markets in the Farmers Market category, which is a big leap from only eight just two years ago! That seems to say something about the level of healthy interest in eating local, chemical-free foods, and that is all to the good. We hope you appreciate all the wonderful things our Market has to offer, and will take a moment to go to Indy A-List and vote for the Broad Ripple Farmers Market as the best in Indy. Let's try to make it a three-peat! |

Vendor Profile: Nicey Treat
Last Saturday we welcomed a new vendor to the Market, and they were an instant hit! On these hot, steamy, summer Saturdays, what could be better than an all-natural, gourmet, frozen treat? Nicey Treat to the rescue with a variety of delicious flavors!
Several years ago, Jeff Patrick was vacationing in Mexico and tried a local poolside frozen fruit paleta that immediately transported him back to the days of his youth. He remembered visiting his dairyman grandfather and rushing straight to the freezer for a frozen popsicle. Back in the U.S., he and his wife Stacey couldn't find anything to compare with those wonderful Mexican paletas, so they decided to make their own!
Stacey and Jeff took some time doing their research and in February of this year, they started the business. Working out of the kitchens at Duos, they create their frozen treats using the best natural ingredients they can find, organic when possible, natural sweeteners, and no preservatives. When they use dairy, it is local grass-fed milk from Traders Point Creamery, and they have lots of lactose-free options as well.
The lineup of fabulous flavors includes the Nice Dream, a fresh-squeezed orange juice coating over vanilla cream, and the Arnie P., iced tea and lemonade. They also make an Asian version with green tea. Last week at the Market, they had Mango Ginger, Pineapple Basil, Pink Lemonade, Not-So-Hot Chocolate, Calleta (slow-roasted carmel), and Key Lime Pie! Jeff says they have just made a limited special batch of Peaches & Cream pops for the Market this week using Pete's Peaches!
In addition to making a quality product, they believe in being nice, "because nice matters. Be nice to people and be nice to our planet!" is their motto. They use compostable popsicle sticks and are members of 1% for the planet, giving to charities and non-profit organizations. You can follow Nicey Treat on facebook and twitter, or go to their website for more information about what they are making and where to find them. Of course now you can find them on Saturday mornings at the Market!

Focus On: Corn, Glorious Corn!
Growing up in Indiana, I surely had my fair share of corn in the summertime. I thought I had tried corn every way you could fix it, but here is a sweet and spicy recipe that will amaze your tastebuds! (Charm City, by the way, is a nickname for Baltimore.)
Charm City Corn
recipe courtesy Food Network Magazine
Directions:
Bring 2 cups water, 1 cup milk and a pinch of salt to a boil in a pot. Cut 4 ears corn into thirds; add to the pot and cook until crisp-tender, 5 minutes, then drain. In the same pot, melt 4 tablespoons butter with 2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning, a dash of green hot sauce and some salt. Toss the corn in the spicy butter.
