peach dahliasMarket Shopping for Mother's Day

The modern holiday was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1907, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. She then began a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the US, and she was successful in 1914. The holiday was adopted by other countries and it's now celebrated all over the world.

This Mother's Day you can do all your gift shopping at the Market! There are beautiful flowers, and hanging baskets to please the eye. If she has a green thumb, garden and bedding plants are available. Maybe some artisan chocolates or aromatic soaps and balms made with honey would delight her. Of course you can always buy fresh produce, grass-fed meats, artisan cheeses and breads, and prepare a delicious meal you can all share. And don't forget to pick up some hand-made ice cream for dessert!

Changes at the Market and Vendor Schedules

Many of you asked us last Saturday about Your Neighbor's Garden. After the untimely passing of Ross Faris, his widow has decided to close the business, so they will not be back at the Market this season.

Capriole Farmstead Goat Cheeses was notably absent on opening day.  They were only with us for a few markets last year. Business has been so good that they don't have enough cheese. Currently they are working on increasing production to rebuild inventory and then reevaluate their ability to supply and staff farmers markets.

We also had questions about the Wednesday Market. Due to difficulties with the venue at the Park, we will not have a mid-week market this season.

Hidden Pond Farm will alternate Saturdays with Raw Gourmet Delights who will have Natural Born Juicers drinks available for sale at their booth.

The following vendors will be at the market once a month:

Rosies' Riblets will be at the market the first Saturday of the month.
ARPO will be present on the 2nd Saturday (except this month it will be the 4th).
Second Helpings will come to the market on the 3rd Saturday.
Nujac Farms will have the 4th Saturday (although they were with us last week).

Focus On: Something Special for Mom

As a mom myself, I am hoping someone will make a special breakfast for me this Sunday morning. My ideal breakfast would be served to me in bed with a bunch of fresh lavender in a vase, my favorite coffee with creamer, and the Sunday paper. Then arrange a cat or two on my feet to keep them warm and put some Andrea Boccelli on the CD player and I'll be happy.

Here are some great breakfast ideas to treat the special mom in your life. I would be thrilled to find any of these on my breakfast tray!

Heart-Shaped Pancakes

from Martha Stewart Living

Ingredients:heart shaped pancakes

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 large egg, lightly beaten

1 cup milk

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

plus 1 tablespoon for griddle

Directions:

Preheat griddle to 375 degrees, or heat griddle pan over medium-high heat. Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in medium bowl. Add egg, milk, and 2 tablespoons melted butter; whisk to combine.

Preheat oven to 175 degrees. Test griddle by sprinkling with a few drops of water. If water bounces and spatters, it is hot enough. With paper towel, brush 1/2 teaspoon butter onto griddle. Wipe off excess.

Fill a pastry bag fitted with a 1/4-inch plain round tip with batter; twist end of bag, and secure with rubber band. Working in batches, pipe heart shapes, drawing V of batter in center of hearts to fill, on heated griddle. When pancakes have bubbles on top and are slightly dry around the edges, about 2 minutes, flip over. Cook until golden on the bottom, about 1 minute.

Repeat with remaining batter, using 1/2 teaspoon butter on griddle for each batch, keeping finished pancakes on a heat-proof plate in the oven until ready to serve.

Top with fresh fruit (maybe a compote of rhubarb from the Market).

Makes twelve 4-inch pancakes.
