Welcome Back to the Market!

Welcome back! Those of us who volunteer at the Market are very excited to see our vendors and our customers again!

Our 2011 season ended on a very sad note with the unexpected loss of one of our anchor vendors, Ross Faris from Your Neighbor's Garden. Ross was a mentor for me, and I will miss him sending me newsletters from other Markets he visited around the country. And I'll miss his regular suggestions and advice on improving the Market. I guess that makes me (and the whole BRFM volunteer team) part of his legacy - his mentoring has meant that we are always looking for new ways to make the Market better serve its customers and its vendors.

We have several new vendors this year - some to fill the void left by Your Neighbor's Garden and some to help round out our product offering. We'll look forward to your feedback as the season rolls out.

A Reminder About Dog Manners at the Market

We have some simple rules to make dog visits to the Market a pleasant and safe experience for everyone.
  • Dog visitors must be kept on a short lead and by their owner's side.
  • Dog visitors must be friendly to other dogs and children.
  • Dog visitors must not put their paws on vendor tables.
  • Dog visitors must not sniff displayed produce, plants, or food.
  • Dog visitors must not pee on plants, flowers, table or tent legs, etc.
  • Dog owners should come prepared to clean up after an "accident".

Owners may be reminded about the rules. Owners who choose not to follow the rules may be asked to leave the Market.

Thanks for your help in keeping the Broad Ripple Farmers Market dog-friendly!

Musical Guest: Brearton and Hughes

Brearton and HugesDon't forget to stop by the entertainment booth and catch Brearton and Hughes playing a mix of covers and original music that could be classified as easy listening in the traditional folk music style.

As always, the entertainment is provided at no cost to the BRFM. If you like what you hear, please consider purchasing a CD and/or leaving a tip.

Focus On: Good-for-You Greens

Researchers have found that consuming generous amounts of fruit and raw vegetables modify a gene that is the strongest marker for heart disease. So using wonderful spring greens in heart-healthy dishes is not only a delicious idea, it could lead to many more years of life for you and your family! Try this wonderful juice recipe with lots of greens to start your day. Then take a look at some more fresh ideas for using the seasonal offerings you find at the Market to "green up" your spring table.

All-Green Juice

Ingredients: green juice
  • Handful of romaine hearts
  • Handful of kale or collard leaves, stemmed
  • Handful of spinach leaves
  • 2 handfuls fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves
  • 2 or 3 celery stalks
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
Directions:

Wash the romaine, kale, spinach, parsley, celery and ginger well, then cut them up as needed to fit through the chute of your juicer. Juice the ingredients (except the lemon juice) in the order listed. Stir in the lemon juice and serve immediately. Serves 1.
