10 Health Benefits of Apples

 

basket of applesWe're told that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what exactly are the health benefits of apples? Here are ten reasons to heed the advice of that old proverb.

 

1. Bone Protection:  A flavonoid found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density.  

2. Asthma Help:  A study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice daily suffered less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once a month.  

3. Alzheimer's Prevention:  A study at Cornell University found that quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer's .

4. Lower Cholesterol:  The pectin in apples lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

5. Lung Cancer Prevention:  According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50% lower risk of developing lung cancer.  

6. Breast Cancer Prevention:  A Cornell University study found that rats that ate 1 apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17%. Rats fed 3 apples per day reduced their risk by 39%, and those fed 6 apples per day reduced their risk by 44%.

7. Colon Cancer Prevention:  One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43% lower risk of colon cancer.  

8. Liver Cancer Prevention:  Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57% lower risk of liver cancer.

9. Diabetes Management:  The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.

10. Weight Loss:  A Brazilian study found that women who ate three apples or pears per day lost more weight while dieting than women who did not eat fruit while dieting.

What are your favorite things about the Market(s)?

I love the variety - all the people from all walks of life, the vendors, the produce and the products! I really enjoy the atmosphere. And I love all the friendly dogs!

How did you become a BRFM volunteer?

I was looking for ways to spend my time, other than sitting in my apartment, since I don't have much money to spend. I stopped in at the Wednesday Market to sign up for the e-newsletter and found out about volunteering.

What do you do when you are not at the Market(s)?

I work for Franklin University of Ohio at 82nd and Allisonville,   where I do a lot of explaining that it is different from Franklin College. I also do freelance writing -- web and marketing articles and music reviews, that kind of thing. I play the guitar,  I am a bit of a foodie, and I also like craft beers.

What would you tell someone who is thinking of volunteering at the BRFM?

You'll have a fantastic time! You'll get to talk to a lot of interesting people, learn more about food, and eat lots of good stuff!

Focus On: Pears

 

Pears are underrated in my opinion. They always play second fiddle to their popular and patriotic cousins, the apples. Nobody says, "A pear a day keeps the doctor away," or "as American as pear pie." But for me, pears are a little bit of heaven!

 

A ripe pear and a piece of good cheese is a snack that cannot be beat. Pears sliced or diced in a salad with gorgonzola crumbles, red onion, and walnut pieces is a divine accompaniment to a fine cut of meat. And one of my favorite desserts is simply a pear cut into bite-size pieces with a couple of spoonfuls of ricotta, a handful of chopped walnuts and a drizzle of Nocello (walnut liqueur).

 

Pears can be grilled, carmelized, roasted, poached, pureed or dipped in chocolate. The subtly sweet, soft texture of a pear is truly a beautiful thing. Here is a favorite of mine that makes a simple, but satisfying, meal paired with a soup or salad. 

 

Grilled Cheese with Pear  

 

This recipe is a combination of three similar ones from Giada De Laurentiis, Rachael Ray, and Martha Stewart. I don't have a panini maker, so I use a grill pan. They each use a different type of cheese, but I am partial to the Fontina. Martha uses butter, where Giada and Rachael use olive oil. Giada adds fresh arugula or spinach and Rachael adds fresh sage which are all wonderful. I also like to include her carmelized onions if I am not in too big a hurry.  Martha includes ham in her recipe (and so do I), but the other two chefs don't find it necessary.

Ingredients:

 

8 slices of ciabatta or other good bread

butter or olive oil to spread on bread 

2 ripe pears, thinly sliced

1 lb. of Fontina, Gruyère, or other melting cheese  

1 lb. of deli sliced ham (optional) 

3 oz. arugula or spinach (optional) 

or 2 oz. chopped fresh sage (optional)

carmelized onions (optional)   

 

Directions: 

  1. Layer 4 slices of bread with 8 ounces cheese, 1 thinly sliced pear; the optional  sliced ham, arugula or spinach, sage, onions; top each with bread.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Spread outside of both bread slices with butter or oil. Cook sandwiches in batches, if necessary, until golden and cheese is melted, flipping once, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Cut sandwiches in half and serve hot. Enjoy with soup or salad!

This sampling of pear recipes makes use of a variety of techniques and runs the gamut from sweet to savory for a full array of pear deliciousness!
