Volunteer Profile: Jinny Sauer Bastianelli
What are your favorite things about the market? It's hard to choose my favorites. I love just about everything from the produce to the baked goods to the meats and the condiments -- I love it all because it's local. Buying local is good for the community and the planet. Who wouldn't love that?

How did you become a BRFM volunteer?
Some friends introduced my husband and me to the Market several years ago. Last season I signed up for the newsletter. When I found out they needed someone to take over the newsletter duties, I jumped at the chance to get involved.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at BRFM?
This has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I am learning more every day about the Market and the local farmers and businesses who sell their products here. With two Markets now, there are even more opportunities. I say, "Do it!"
What do you do when you are not at the market? I am a freelance graphic designer, as well as an aspiring artist and writer. As a wife and mom, I take care of our home and our two cats and occasionally get to cook for our grown-up sons -- when they show up at dinner time. I love to make healthy meals, and cable cooking programs are my guilty pleasure.
For more information about volunteering at the market, send an e-mail to elizabeth@broadripplefarmersmarket.org.

Eat With the Seasons
One recommendation for adding more vegetables to your diet is to "eat with the seasons; hit up the Farmers Market and try a new veggie each week." We think that's a great idea! Click to see 10 ways to add more vegetables to your diet.

Focus On: Burgers It's a fact that guys love to grill. So for Father's Day, why not honor dear old dad with some healthy and delicious variations on a great American classic?
Burger Basics The Market is the perfect place to find alternatives to ground beef. Locally raised bison, lamb, pork, chicken and turkey are all good lean options to try. And what better place to find ingredients for a great veggie burger? The secret to grilling a leaner burger is to replace the fat with something to add flavor and keep the meat moist. For example, adding a little oil, zucchini, salsa and fresh herbs gives flavor as well as added moisture in the Southwest Chicken Burgers below. Check out all these great recipes or create one of your own!
Smoky Buffalo Burgers Basil and Garlic Pork Burgers Spanish Pork Burgers Goat Cheese Stuffed Lamb Burgers Terrific Turkey Burgers Southwest Chicken Burgers Veggie Burgers Plus the Trimmings Switch to a whole wheat or multi-grain bun, focaccia, flatbread, or even pitas or wraps. Toppings can be much more than just a slab of processed cheese. Go for an ultra-flavorful artisan cheese instead. Try adding cooked onions, mushrooms, sliced avocado, roasted peppers or squash, fresh tomato and cucumber slices, fresh spinach, arugula or sautéed greens with garlic. For a unique spread, what about an herb butter, spicy yogurt, hummus or pesto to complement your creation. Then have dad sit back and take a big bite of the good life! Happy Father's Day! |

Musical Guests: Wednesday Market - The Michaels
Saturday Market - Paul Matthew Lauck
 | |
Paul Matthew Lauck |
Don't forget to stop by the entertainment booth at either market and catch our musical guest of the day.
The Michaels is an artistic partnership of Brett Wiscons and Jon Shoulders, two veterans of the Indianapolis and Bloomington live music scenes.
Paul Matthew Lauck has been hailed as "one of the great finds of the downtown music scene" by local music guru Tim Brickley.
As always, the entertainment is provided at no cost to the
BRFM. If you like what you hear, please consider purchasing a CD and/or leaving a tip.
