Meet the BRFM Market Master

Barbara Wilder
Barbara Wilder is beginning her second season as the BRFM Market Master. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Broad Ripple Village Association. Below are a few other things you might not know about Barbara.

Barbara works as the Chief Quality Officer for MDwise, a not-for-profit managed care organization founded by the Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County and Clarian Health Partners, to help vulnerable populations needing health coverage in Indiana.

As much as she loves the products offered at the BRFM, Barbara says the people are her favorite part.

Given all the menus in the world, Barbara's favorite meal is whatever the chefs create for the BRFM's annual Dinner in the Garden.

If she had a booth at the BRFM, Barbara would sell wild game (however, she's not entirely sure how she would acquire it, so her backup plan would be to sell flowers from her garden at home).

Barbara started coming to the market before it relocated to Broad Ripple Magnet High School. A delicious basket of pears from Lee's Orchard hooked her as a customer. Getting involved started when she asked for a yard sign and shared some ideas about promoting the market with Ross Faris of Your Neighbor's Garden.

Featured Recipe: Orange Caramel Sauce

This recipe was a successful merging of many recipes and techniques, in an effort to create a delicious seasonal but light sauce for bread pudding. It would also be great on cheesecake, ice cream, paired with chocolate or, dare we suggest it, drizzled on your morning oatmeal.  For a more decadent, but not so light sauce, replace the evaporated milk with heavy cream.

(Click on bread pudding or cheesecake for recipes from the Food Network.  Or share your tips and secrets on the BRFM Facebook page.)

IngredientsOranges

  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 2 Cups freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 Cup evaporated milk - skim or 2% works fine, but not sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 Cup granulated sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Grand Marnier or other orange liqueur (optional)

 Directions

  1. Bring the juice to a simmer over medium-high heat in a medium saucepan, then reduce to 1/4 cup, about 10 minutes.  Watch carefully to be sure the juice does not scorch.

  2. Strain through a fine sieve into a bowl, add evaporated milk, stir and set aside.

  3. In another saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add sugar and continue to cook, stirring frequently until sugar is lightly caramelized, about 3 minutes, stirring lightly to prevent burning. Sugar should resemble light brown sugar when it's properly cooked.

  4. Add the orange juice mixture, stirring constantly. Careful, the mixture may bubble and swell extensively.  Simmer for 5 minutes, while continuing to stir constantly.

  5. Strain through a fine sieve into a heat proof container, stir in zest and liqueur if using.   Allow to cool slightly and serve as desired.

  6. Store any unused sauce in the refrigerator for up to one week.

 Countdown to opening weekend . . . 15 weeks and 2 days!
