Savor Farm Fresh Taste All Winter Long
Want to know how to make your purchases last into the winter? Ask your favorite vendor or the BRFM volunteers for storage and preserving tips.
For example, did you know you can freeze cider for up to one year? Simply pour cider into containers (plastic milk cartons that have been washed in warm soapy water and rinsed well, for example). Allow ample head space since the cider will expand as it freezes. Seal, label and freeze.

Market Trivia
This week's question:
When does BRFM kick off its 2011 season?
a) the first Saturday in May
b) Saturday, May 7th, 2011
c) both are correct.
Answer to last week's question:
False. Although pumpkin and squash may have been served at the first Thanksgiving, early Americans did not have the ability or means to make pie crust at that time.

Recipe: Desserts with a Twist
If you're stuck in a dessert rut, try one of these twists on tradition favorites! Experienced bakers will love the decadence (yet simplicity) of Sweet Potato Tart Tatin and Pecan Pie Truffles. Those looking to make new desserts or looking for recipes that kids can make should try our simple Ginger Ice Box Cake or Cranberry Granita.
Featured Recipe: Cranberry Granita
Show: Good Eats Episode: Cran Opening
Perfect for dessert when you've had a little too much turkey dinner, this light and tasty creation by celebrity chef Alton Brown is super simple and can be made well in advance. Plus, you don't need any special equipment to make it, just a couple of pans, a blender or food processor, a strainer, and a fork.
Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 5 1/2 ounces cranberries, approximately 1 1/2 cups, washed and sorted
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon lime zest
Directions Place the water, cranberries, and sugar into a small saucepan, set over medium-high heat, and simmer until the berries begin to pop, approximately 7 minutes. Remove from the heat. Puree with a blender or food processor for 1 minute. Pass the mixture through a fine mesh strainer directly into a metal 13 by 9-inch pan. Do not press on the skins. Simply allow the juice to drip through the strainer. Add the zest and stir to combine. Place in the freezer until set, at least 6 hours and up to overnight.
Once frozen completely, scrape the mixture with a fork to create a shaved ice texture. Serve immediately.
