| Vendor Profile: Whipker Azalia Farm Market |
| Grandpa Elmer Whipker, Sr., started the family farm in Azalia, Indiana. In 1954, Bennie (Keith's dad) got in the business, and now Keith is continuing the tradition. They have been a part of the BRFM since the days of the Broad Ripple Brewpub location. Keith followed up on an idea to build on their roadside stand (originally located on SR 7 before US 37 was put in - then moved to US 37) by checking out farmers markets. It was Keith's idea to try the BRFM. His mom and dad weren't too sure about it, but after one market when Keith couldn't be there, they were the ones who did every market from then on out.
Due to his parent's health issues, Keith is keeping Whipker Farm a part of our market. Family friend, Martha Tavel, helps out and does the kettle corn. Whipkers offers tomatoes, sweet corn, watermelon, eggplant, zucchini, potatoes, onions, peppers in season now. The fall will bring pumpkins and gourds. |
Tomato, Watermelon and Basil Skewers
|
| This simply recipe is perfect for a hot summer evening. For a picnic friendly alternative, simply skip the skewers and gently toss the ingredients together before packing in reusable containers.
Ingredients1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup sugar 1 (4 to 5 pound) watermelon, cut into 32 (1 1/2-inch cubes 32 small basil leaves (or torn larger leaves) 16 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt Special equipment: 16 (6-inch) skewers Directions
Combine the balsamic vinegar and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved. Turn off the heat and set aside to cool. Starting with the watermelon squares, push the watermelon to the very tip of the skewer. Then skewer a basil leaf, then a tomato half. Continue with another watermelon, basil leaf, and tomato half. Place the skewer on a serving platter so it stands upright, using the lowest watermelon square as a base. Continue with the remaining skewers. Recipe from The Food Network |
