Nine text formatting tips you can use today
The devil is in the details, making a pronounced difference between a professional-looking marketing piece and an amateurish piece destined for the round file. Here are some of our favorite tips you can easily implement when formatting your next document.
- Use soft returns to keep names and dates together rather than splitting across two lines.
- Avoid long lines of small type that scroll all the way across the page. They are are hard on the eyes and really slow down the reader. Turn those long lines into columns.
- But also avoid short lines of large type which inevitably have excessive hyphenation. Both cases decrease readability.
- Limit headlines to no more than three lines.
- Eliminate all hyphens in headlines.
- Eliminate excess space in lists by reducing the distance between bullets (or numbers) and the text they introduce.
- Avoid subheads appearing by themselves at the bottom of a column or page. Make sure at least two sentences of the paragraph follow subheads.
- Never indent the first line of a paragraph following a headline or subhead.
and finally,
- Break the habit of typing two spaces after periods - that went out with the typewriter. Thanks to the computer, only one space is necessary after a period.
