Using copyrights and trademarks right!
A professional speaker client recently provided us with text for the design of a new one-sheet and included copyright (©) symbols in various places. Our previous experience using copyrights caused red flags to go up since we knew that titles, individual words, names of companies and seminar names could not be "copyrighted" as was requested.
To be sure we provided the proper advice on the correct usage of copyrights vs. trademarks, and so the client's one sheet was in sync with the laws, we did some additional research to validate what we knew was correct. Here is what we found:
- COPYRIGHTS ©: In the world of print media, a copyright covers works of authorship including photos, graphic designs, illustrations, books, publications and other written works. (songs, movies, etc. are also included here.)
- TRADEMARKS ™: To protect words, phrases and logos used to identify the source of goods and/or services, a trademark is the way to go.
