Join Us For "Mental Illness Awareness:
Becoming a Welcoming Community"

ICS presents this Lunch and Learn series on Thursday, October 11 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Grace St. Paul's Episcopal Church to help faith communities build on the information presented at last spring's "Faith Communities & Mental Illness: Tools for Response and Care."

Mental illness"Mental Illness Awareness: Becoming a Welcoming Community" will feature speaker UA President Emeritus Dr. Peter Likins, who will discuss what his family experienced in dealing with the stigma of mental illness and the misunderstanding that surrounds it. Dr. Likins' talk will be followed by a panel discussion with members of local faith communities and an open discussion to allow participants to make the most of the session.

Clergy, pastoral care volunteers, lay leaders, and anyone with an interest in this issue are invited to attend. Registration is $10 per person and includes lunch. To register or for more information contact Terry Alexander at 297-2738 ext. 233 or talexander@icstucson.org. Thanks to The David C. and Lura M. Lovell Foundation for making the Lunch and Learn series possible!

"Mental Illness Awareness: Becoming a Welcoming Community," will take place during national Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 7-13, 2012), which promotes awareness, education and advocacy.

ICS Offering Free Mental Illness Resource Kits to Faith Communities

Faith communities are often the first places where individuals and families turn to seek assistance with mental health issues. To help congregations be more knowledgeable and better able to respond, ICS has compiled a special resource kit for faith communities with useful information on mental illness topics, listings of local care resources, and ways to get involved to help reduce stigma and encourage those in need to seek help. The kits are available free of charge. For a copy call ICS at 297-2738 ext. 233.

"Gifts of Love" Helps Over 400 Students
Go Back to School with Tools to Succeed

Gifts of Love School SuppliesAs of press time, ICS has helped over 400 children from low-income families with school supplies for the 2012-2013 academic year. Through your generosity, we surpassed our goal to have enough supplies for 250-300 students. ICS will continue to distribute supplies through August. Thank you for helping so many students go back to school with the supplies they need to learn and grow this year!

Edward Jones Bag-A-Thon Kicks Off Oct. 3

Get ready: the 6th annual Edward Jones "Bag-A-Thon" food drive for the ICS Food Bank runs October 3 to November 3! The Bag-A-Thon is ICS's single largest food collection event of the year and it is essential to ensure ICS can meet the need for food during the holiday season. Last year ICS provided nearly 2,000 holiday food bags to households in need and we expect that number to increase this year.

The 2011 Bag-A-Thon gathered an impressive 42,088 pounds of food, but organizer and ICS board member Ken Blanchard wants to top that result by collecting at least 50,000 pounds this year. You can help--mobilize your group and get involved! A complete list of Bag-A-Thon drop-off locations and needed items will be posted in September on the ICS website.
Local Talent Beautifies ICS

The ICS campus at our northwest location is looking a little more inviting thanks to the generous efforts of some of our supporters.

LandscapingLesley Mansur, a landscape designer, offered to put her skills to work by landscaping the area around the new food bank building and the ICS main office. Lesley and her crew donated over 50 hours of their time to plan and implement the landscaping, which beautified our campus and saved ICS hundreds of dollars. "I personally feel that I'm blessed, and one way I can say thank you for the blessing is to 'give back,'" Lesley said. "This was a gift I could do with my talents."

Food bank muralSarah Gabbert Schmerl added wonderful splashes of color to the ICS Food Bank with food-themed murals in the client area and at the exit. Sarah's art brightens the interior and creates a welcoming place for recipients. Her idea for the mural was to give our youngest ICS Food Bank visitors a sense of where the food they are receiving comes from. Sarah has painted several public murals around town, including at St. Joseph's and St. Mary's hospitals. Thanks to Sarah for her art, and also to Bruce and Karen Bittmann for their help with the supplies.
Free "Critical Conversations" Workshops
Tani Bahti, an R.N. and executive director of Passages, is offering her informative and compassionate classes that address end-of-life issues and concerns.

The free two-hour seminar covers two topics. "My Life, My Choice: Navigating the Challenges of End of Life Decision-Making" addresses some of the legal, ethical, and emotional issues surrounding this topic and helps participants identify resources and methods to overcome barriers. "From Touchy to Touching: Talking About the Dying" promotes communication and closure by discussing the natural changes the body goes through near the end of life and how to manage those changes.

The classes will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the ICS conference room at 2820 W. Ina Road on the following dates:
  • Thursday, September 13, 2012
  • Thursday, November 15, 2012
  • Friday, January 11, 2013
Register at www.passageseduation.org or by calling 520-400-0274. Additional information is also available on the ICS website.
