THE LATEST FROM THE AMSA
Our sincere thanks to JOHN BISNEY, Dir. of Public Relations for the AMSA.  John provided us with the following pertinent information:

" We have a lot happening here AMSA, so I thought I'd pass on a few items in case they might be of interest to you.

First, of course, the countdown to ProMover continues with the official start of the program still set for January 1.  This landmark consumer protection initiative, undertaken voluntarily by the industry, will go a long way to put so-called rogue operators out of business. We have been busy over the summer, screening all of our current members to make sure they meet the new standards to receive the ProMover designation.  Unfortunately, we found a substantial number were not qualified going forward.  Although some were able to correct the deficiencies to our satisfaction, others were not.  They are no longer AMSA members!  And as word spreads through the industry that the ProMover designation will give AMSA members a competitive edge, we are seeing more and more movers contact us, wanting to join and get on board before the ship sails (before the van rolls?)  We will be hosting the National ProMover Summit here in the DC area Nov. 12-13.

We have on-line registration now open for our 2009 Annual Conference & Expo, set for Feb. 8-11 in Dallas.  We will again have the GSA Household Goods Freight Forum as our guest.  But the big news for movers is that AMSA, seeing the downturn in the industry coming, selected a downtown hotel and not a resort property as we have in the past, to be able to offer lower room rates to attendees.  And this year, the price of the banquet, auction and entertainment are all included in the conference registration fee -- a savings of $100 from our last conference.  Finally, we're making it easier for attendees to bring a colleague - they'll get $100 off the registration for every additional attendee from their location.  So we are very much in tune with the economic challenges the country faces - and our conference theme is "New Frontiers, New Opportunities," meaning many of our sessions are devoted to finding new revenue streams during this downturn.

In September, we had a record turn-out for this years' "Moving Day on Capitol Hill," with 65 AMSA members visiting with 35 Senate and House offices.  And they were armed with new facts and statistics thanks to a new report from the Moving & Storage Institute which is the first comprehensive study of the economics of the U.S. moving and storage industry.  It revealed details of this diverse $16.5 billion sector, which provides 122,600 jobs distributed through all 50 states, with local small businesses comprising 96% of the industry's establishments.

But we're not content to stop there!  AMSA is now overhauling our Registered International Mover certification program, with changes aimed both at making it both affordable but also more substantive as we see the international market holding its own even in these challenging economic times."
