After last month's dire predictions of "gloom and doom" for the moving industry, we have been encouraged by a scattering of reports from around the country that business isn't as bad as many believe it to be.  Sure, we continue to receive news of company closings (see our Heard On The Street Column) and layoffs, but many of you are reporting a good last quarter for 2007 and yes, some optimism for the first quarter of 2008....We will continue to listen and report.
 
We've got lots of stuff this month, so let's get to it.....

After 102 years in business, CONTINENTAL MOVING & STORAGE of Birmingham, AL has closed their doors......This leaves the city of Birmingham without any NorthAmerican Van Lines representation.......
 
BEKINS VAN LINES, Hillside, IL, recently announced a round of layoffs.....
 
Congratulations to ANTHONY LOCATELLI on being named the COO of S&M UNITED.........
 
SAN DIEGO CLOSINGS:  REPUBLIC VAN LINES and CREWS MOVING SYSTEMS, both long-time San Diego movers, have shut down operations......
 
ALEXANDERS MOBILITY SERVICES has completed their move into their beautiful new facility in Baltimore....(Again, I've always said that it's good for movers to go through a move of their own once in a while).......
 
PHOENIX HAPPENINGS:  Our little birdies are telling us that BERGER ALLIED is buying ABC ALLIED.......VALDEZ TRANSFER, the former BEKINS agent in Phoenix, has changed it's name to PCT DISTRIBUTION and is now an agent for HOME DIRECT USA.........
 
RUMOR HAS IT that yours truly, MOVERS SEARCH GROUP, will be opening a CHICAGO office....NOT TRUE.....HOWEVER, we CAN tell you that there is a NEW HHG recruiter who has opened shop in IL...more on this later in this column......
 
MOST UNUSUAL MOVE OF THE YEAR (so far):  Go to the MAYFLOWER TRANSIT website ( www.mayflower.com ) and click on their "Newsroom" page....There you will find the details on HIDDEN VALLEY MAYFLOWER'S "Grand" move......It's a neat story where Hidden Valley used a helicopter to move U.S. Coast Guard Captain Dr. Richard Caldwell and his possessions from the floor of the GRAND CANYON!.....Dr. Caldwell was assigned to provide medical care to the Havasupai Tribe of Indians who reside in the Canyon......
 
DAVID MOTHERWELL has been appointed President of ALTAIR GLOBAL RELOCATION of Dallas, TX......
 
MATTHEW DICKERSON has been named chief innovation officer of MOBILITY SERVICES INTERNATIONAL.....
 
PRIMACY RELOCATION has named JIM EDWARDS as VP of Supply Chain Management...........

DALE EHMKE.....Dale's doing great!  I had a chance to speak with him late last month and he is enjoying life after having moved to the beautiful Arizona desert......JULIE SMITH (my best competitor in the headhunter business)....Julie has herself left her association with an Atlanta-area recruiter and has formed her own practice:  WESTBROOK CONSULTING SERVICES........
 
RUMOR CONTROL CENTRAL:  DON'T believe the latest rumor circling the industry that NATIONAL VAN LINES has been sold...We have been asked by the good folks at National to set the record straight.....What HAS transpired at National is the fact that JEFF PINK, formerly of PINK TRNASFER in Monrovia, CA, will be assuming the role as Executive VP of the van line....
 
INDIANA NATIVE takes over helm at ATLAS WORLD GROUP:  JIM STAMM has ascended to the position of CHAIRMAN and CEO of Atlas World Group........
 
E.E. WARD MOVING & STORAGE CO. LLC has become an agent for NORTHAMERICAN VL....Significant about E. E. Ward is the fact that the company has been in operation for more than 125 years and is recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and the Congressional Record as one of the oldest African-American owned businesses in the country....The company is co-owned and managed by BRIAN BROOKS and OTTO BEATTY, III........
 
GOOD NEWS FOR "GOOD GUY" MOVERS:  The U.S. Dept. of Justice announced the indictment of 14 moving industry employees in CA and FL for committing extortion and fraud upon consumers in residential moves...for a copy of the press release on this matter, go to www.usdoj.gov/usao/can. .........
 
ON A PERSONAL NOTE:  Thanks to RANDY BROWNING, newly-elected Chairman of the FLORIDA MOVERS & WAREHOUSMEN'S ASSN and all of the FL members for a truly wonderful convention in Orlando, FL......I had the pleasure of attending and sponsoring a portion of the event  and truly enjoyed the opportunity to meet some fine industry folks.....Also got a chance to see ED KATZ in action, having attended his entertaining and informational OFFICE MOVING SEMINAR......Take a look at some of the festivities and get a chance to see for yourself why I keep my ugly mug hidden behind a phone most of the time....view pictures of attendees (and yours truly) at the following links:

CORRECTION:  Last month we reported that an Atlanta-based company had purchased Clearwater, FL based PODS....well, we were a little off geographically.....It appears that the owners are based in BAHRAIN!.....Isn't Bahrain an Atlanta suburb?!?!?!?!
