HEARD ON THE STREET
The entire HHG industry mourns the recent passing of two California industry veterans, DAVID MENNE and RON ROTHERHAM....both gentlemen were highly respected and will be missed.......
ANOTHER NAME CHANGE DEPT.: Expect an announcement soon from a MAJOR multii-location van line agent (Hint: They have more than 15 locations) that they will be changing their name.....NOT their van line affiliation, but their name.....more to follow....
DANIEL'S MOVING AND STORAGE, an ATLAS agent headquartered in Phoenix, has opened a new office in Tucson, AZ......A+ MOVING & STORAGE, another ATLAS agent, is also expanding: They have announced their new office in NW GA, serving the Chattanooga, TN area.....
MAUREEN BEAL, CEO of NATIONAL VAN LINES, has been inducted into the Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame...........
More layoffs within the ALLIED VAN LINES/SIRVA system.....word is that close to 60 corporate employees recently received pink slips........
ASSOCIATED ALLIED, Birmingham, AL, has closed their doors........
The HHG Industry is a buzz about the May 7th decision of the government's Surface Transportation Board (STB) that effectively ends antitrust immunity for collective ratemaking for the moving industry.......The STB has set a September 4th deadline to eliminate the 70 year old practice of a common tariff for the HHG Industry. Of course, this means that individual carriers will need to develop new tariffs, consider new shipment and accounting software, amended customer contracts, revise sales brochures and set up new arrangements with contractors. NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME FOR YOU TO JOIN BOTH YOUR STATE MOVERS' ASSOCIATIONS AND THE AMSA IN AN EFFORT TO BAND TOGETHER AS A UNITED INDUSTRY TO HELP EASE THE IMPACT OF THESE CHALLENGES TO YOUR BUSINESS..........
We're hearing some complaints about a certain company that rents moving boxes (permanent boxes, not cardboard).....Seems that this company, for years a supplier to the HHG industry, is now hiring it's own labor force and is in fact competing against the movers in certain locations.......
Congrats to MINIMOVES, INC...having experienced tremendous growth during the last two quarters, the company will be opening 20+ new locations this summer......For those of you who don't know, MINIMOVES is a national full service moving company dedicated to small shipments. The company has been in business for over 15 years........
NetMOVE, a progressive and innovative moving company in the metropolitan Atlanta area, has just signed on with WHEATON VAN LINES. Congrats to industry veteran JOHN KRYSAK on the growth of his business......
Seems that an issue of our Newsletter always contains news of DAVID CARUSO and his growth as the largest multi-location Bekins VL agent in the country....He has announced that PINNACLE WORLDWIDE RELOCATIONS, his latest acquisition located in metro Chicago, will join his BEKINS A-1 family of BVL agencies.......
BEKINS' other mega-agent, TRUE VAN LINES, has announced new full-service BVL agencies in Tulsa, OK, Birmingham, AL and Milwaukee, WI.......
Three other agents have recently joined the BEKINS' family: WORLDWIDE RELOCATIONS (Raleigh, NC); SPS MOVING of Ft. Myers, FL and HOLIDAY M&S in El Paso, TX............

| Dear HHG and Relocation Professionals:
READY. SET. GO?....Supposedly, this year's "Busy Season" is upon us. Unfortunately, early reports indicate that this may be the worst year, business volume-wise, since the year following 9/11.
There is some good news: As we go to press today, the word is that things ARE picking up in many parts of the country. Here's wishing everyone a big boost in activity and, most importantly, a profitable summer season.
Now, on to this month's Newsletter.....
