Heard On The Street
IF WE HAD TO characterize the mood of the industry in anticipation of this year's upcoming "busy season", we would choose the word "apprehensive".......Talking with hundreds of you each week normally provides us with a pretty good read as to what's happening out there and what the realistic expecations are. This year, however, we're still getting MIXED SIGNALS.......
In our conversations with you all, we have been getting some pretty gloomy forecasts. We ran a survey on our website as to whether the industry was forecasting an UP or DOWN year...THE RESULTS WERE SURPRISING.....for those results and an opporutnity to participate in our next survey, go to the "Weekly Survey" page of our new website at www.MoverRecruiter.com .........
Yes, as we hinted last issue, HILLDRUP UNITED has purchased the metro Atlanta operation of HOLMAN UNITED........
SPEAKING OF ATLANTA, A.C. WHITE will soon move from it's decades-old location near downtown Atlanta and move to the suburbs.......they will take up residence in the former CATHCART ALLIED facility (who we reported as closing last issue)........
CONGRATS to GEORGE DAVENPORT of MCCOLLISTERS TRANSPORTATION. George just received a surprise award for Excellence in Operations at the recent Unigroup Learning Conference........
Ever growing and already established in Baton Rouge, ARMSTRONG RELOCATION has opened another LA location, this time in NEW ORLEANS.......
In anticipation of a down year on the private transferee/COD side of the business, we're hearing that a MAJOR ALLIED VAN LINES AGENT will be helping their system's COD sales reps by subsidizing or "buying down" whatever discounts the salespeople have to offer in order to generate business.........
People we speak to in the GRAEBEL organization are pretty hyped up and optimistic about that company's future plans subsequent to the recent Leadership Conference held at Graebel's Denver-area headquarters........
The ARPIN GROUP, INC. has recently announced the promotion of BOB SULLIVAN as Senior VP-Commercial; and MARK DEARBORN as VP of Quality Assurance.....
WHEATON WORLD WIDE MOVING has named DAVID WITZERMAN as Executive VP and MARK KIRSCHNER as COO...
JOHN TAYLOR has been promoted to VP of Customer Service by ATLAS VAN LINES....MARK SPIEHLER was named VP of Financial Services and MONICA WEISS, a 17 year ATLAS employee, was promoted to VP of Finance......Finally, RYAN McCONNELL was announced as the new Sr. Director of Sales Development......
SPEAKING OF ATLAS VAN LINES, they just signed on MILLER MOVING & STORAGE, of Salinas, CA, as a new agent..
TARIFF TROUBLES......we are starting to hear some grumbling and trepidation about the implementation of Tariff 400-N and it's supposed price simplification proposals...One source tells us that "not only will the way pricing be marketed to the consumer be changed, but the overall impact associated with the revenue distribution will require some MAJOR alterations in IT systems, and, more importantly, driver education.." This source says that because there is not much time for these scheduled changes to be implemented (by 1/2/08), there isn't much time to prepare and educate all the involved parties....MORE TO COME on this important issue....
PHIL PASCHE has been hired as the new GM for AMERICAN MAYFLOWER (Mohawk United) in Dallas TX.....
FINALLY....a little bird has told us that a major van line may be closing two of it's New England offices in the near future and plans to consolidate those operations into one new location, to be determined...
LET US HEAR FROM YOU. This column is only as good as the information you, our readership, provides. EMail your contributions, news or "heard on the street" mumblings to us at markgray@MoverRecruiter.com . Of course, all correspondence will be kept in the strictest of confidence.

Helpful Headhunter's Hints
One of the most popular and well-received pages on our new website at www.MoverRecruiter.com has been our "Frequently Asked Questions". We felt that it would be appropriate and helpful to reprint that page under this column in our Newsletter. We hope that this information will help you all to better understand what it is that we do in the business of recruiting for the moving and storage industry........
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: WHO PAYS YOUR FEES?
A: Our fees are paid by our client companies for whom we recruit the best possible candidates.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FEES?
A: Most recruiters don't want to answer this question on their website. The reason? They generally charge anywhere frojm 20 to 30% of the candidate's first-year salary. As a specialized recruiting firm serving the HHG industry exclusively, we know that the moving business traditionally has slim margins of profitability. Understanding this, our goal and focus is to develop a long term relationship with our clients...not gouge them for one or two mega-fee placements. We are a smaller, specialized firm with substantially lower overhead. As such, we are able to charge a fee that is both compensatory to us while at the same time being more reasonable to the moving industry. Our fee is 15% of the candidate's first-year salary. Further, we don't think that it is fair to charge a percentage fee for sales candidates--After all, it is a lot to ask a hiring authority to pay a substantial up front fee for a sales candidate who may take up to 3 or 4 years to pay for themselves. This is especially true when you factor in salary, draw, PLUS the recruiter's fee. To address this issue, Movers Search Group feels that it is more reasonable to charge a FLAT FEE of $6,750 for a sales candidate. Further, for coordinator candidates, we feel that it is fair to charge a flat fee of $5,250.
Our competition belittles our fee structure by claiming that "you get what you pay for"....We don't agree. As former movers ourselves, we want to provide a SERVICE to the industry---not fleece it.
Q: DO YOU PROVIDE YOUR CLIENTS WITH ANY TYPE OF CANDIDATE GUARANTEE?
A: We do, and it's the most competitive candidate guarantee in the industry: 90 Days, Money Back. Period. No confusing 30,60 or prorated 90 day guarantees here. If our candidate does not remain employed for 90 days from their start date, we refund your ENTIRE fee IN FULL. We don't keep a percentage of the fee if they make it for only 30 or 60 days...If the candidate walks or is terminated on the 89th day, our refund to you is the same as if they left after the first week: THE FULL FEE!
Q: WHAT COMPANIES DO YOU RECRUIT FROM?
A: Any company that is NOT already a client of Movers Search Group. While our primary focus is upon finding the best available talent from within the moving business, don't be surprised if we recruit from companies OUTSIDE of the HHG industry. Further, we don't call upon your competitors with whom you have a "gentlemen's agreement" to not solicit each other's employees. If you prefer, we don't recruit from other agents within your van line system.
We are discreet and professional in the conduct of the search on your behalf. Unlike larger recruiting firms professing to serve the moving industry, we don't assign 2 to 3 recruiters on a search---this results in a duplication of efforts and often leads to a backlash against you from your competitors who are tired of these firms making overlapping calls to their employees. REMEMBER, our recruiting is done ONLY by former moving industry professionals who know your business. We don't employ rookie recruiters who come from other fields.
Q: WHAT IF I AM A CANDIDATE WHO CURRENTLY WORKS FOR ONE OF YOUR CLIENTS?
A: We will advise you that we must decline your request for placement assistance. However, you may rest assured that your inquiry will remain confidential.
Q: WILL YOU WORK WITH ME IF I AM ALREADY USING OTHER RECRUITERS FOR MY JOB SEARCH?
A: Yes. While we would prefer the opportunity to work with you exclusively at first to show you what we can do, we understand that even as the country's most recognized name in HHG staffing and recruitment, even we don't have access to or knowledge of every available opportunity in the industry. Some recruiters refuse to work with you if you are working with another recruiter---We feel that this is a disservice to you, the candidate. If you work with recruiters under this condition, you may be limiting yourself to opportunities only known to that firm, thus limiting your options overall.
