To Those Who Served, We Salute You

Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, is a day to honor and remember the men and women who have worn the uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces. The observance dates to 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, marking the signing of the agreement that ended World War I. This armistice went into effect on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" in 1918. Throughout the years, Americans have celebrated Nov. 11 in a number of ways. On this Veteran's Day, the Navy SEAL Foundation acknowledges all Veterans and their families for their sacrifices to make us safe. We are especially thankful for those that came before us in the Naval Special Warfare community, beginning with the forces who served in World War II up to the present day. We salute you and remember your contributions.

Birdies for the Brave

Birdies for the Brave Golf Tournament Series in Full Swing

Keeping your golf swing in shape while providing peace of mind to a military family; does it get any better than that for a lover of the links?

When PGA TOUR Player Phil Mickelson, and his wife Amy, developed the concept for Birdies for the Brave, a national golf tournament fundraising series, that combination of sportsmanship and philanthropy was born.

According to PGA TOUR spokesman Marc Raiken, the golfing organization was working on a program raising funds for military families back in 2004. Pro golfers Jerry Kelly, Vijay Singh and Frank Lickliter II, came to them asking that the Navy SEAL Foundation be a focus of the PGA TOUR's fundraising efforts. They brought the Navy SEAL Foundation into the program, according to Raiken.

And Birdies for the Brave, as a benefit for the Navy SEAL Foundation, was born.

Throughout the year, tournaments are open to golfers of all skill and ranking at PGA TOUR-owned courses around the country, providing an opportunity to play and support the families of Navy SEALs and their support units.

Focus on Education, One of the Foundation's Core Areas of Support

When Navy SEALs are forward-deployed to some of the most austere, often hostile lands imaginable, they-and their spouses-may rest a little easier knowing there is an organization at home dedicated to supporting their families. The Navy SEAL Foundation provides assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community in ways that really make a difference.

In addition to supporting families in times of achievement and adversity, or providing funding for legacy projects that memorialize fallen operators, the foundation also promotes educational programs for active-duty Naval Special Warfare personnel, their spouses and their children through educational assistance and scholarship programs.

Amanda Justus, a SEAL spouse, is the recipient of just such a foundation scholarship. Three years ago, the Azusa Pacific University business graduate relocated from San Diego to Virginia Beach for a job. She wasn't expecting marriage and a career switch, but that's what happened when she met her husband, a Navy SEAL stationed in the area. It was Amanda's work as a gym manager and CrossFit fitness trainer that spiked the newlywed's desire to enter the medical field last spring.

"Working in the CrossFit environment has completely changed my view on health, making me not just interested in fixing those that are sick, but preventing health problems and improving my clients overall wellbeing," said Amanda. "I thought, 'Why am I not working in the medical field?'"

Thanks to a $5,000 Navy SEAL Foundation scholarship, Amanda is completing her prerequisite studies toward a physicians' assistant degree and will apply to medical school next year.

"The scholarship has been a huge help, and the foundation provides a good support system," she said.

That's what foundation leaders like to hear.

Whether it's a time of adversity or achievement, the Foundation is here to help. It's as simple as that.
