Five and a Half Years: A Look Back at Growing a Mediation Practice

My own experience is to follow your passion, don't take rejection personally, develop a nitch market, empower those who are in need of your services, enrich their lives, and educate and practice your craft.

As Gregorio Billikopf says in his book Party-Directed Mediation. The role of the mediator is to help parties empty the large reservoirs of emotion, anger, stress, frustration, and other negative feelings until each is able to think and see more clearly.

Each of us will follow our own path and I thank those who have given me a chance in developing my mediation practice and those who have assisted me in my own personal development.

Book Review and Recommendation

Upon the recommendation of Anna Spain, an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Law School who has over 17 years of mediation experience during a recent seminar on Mediating Race, Culture and Ethnicity, I picked up a copy of Donna Hicks' book "Dignity: The Essential Role It Plays In Resolving Conflict"

I highly recommend it as  personal development tool and also as a tool to use in dealing with cultural issues in mediation.

Synopsis

The desire for dignity is universal and powerful. It is a motivating force behind all human interaction-in families, in communities, in the business world, and in relationships at the international level. When dignity is violated, the response is likely to involve aggression, even violence, hatred, and vengeance. On the other hand, when people treat one another with dignity, they become more connected and are able to create more meaningful relationships. Surprisingly, most people have little understanding of dignity, observes Donna Hicks in this important book. She examines the reasons for this gap and offers a new set of strategies for becoming aware of dignity's vital role in our lives and learning to put dignity into practice in everyday life.

Drawing on her extensive experience in international conflict resolution and on insights from evolutionary biology, psychology, and neuroscience, Hicks explains what the elements of dignity are, how to recognize dignity violations, how to respond when we are not treated with dignity, how dignity can restore a broken relationship, why leaders must understand the concept of dignity, and more. Hicks shows that by choosing dignity as a way of life, we open the way to greater peace within ourselves and to a safer and more humane world for all.

   Giuseppe Leone.

The goal of Virtual Mediation Lab is to help new and experienced mediators around the world practice and improve their mediation skills by participating - with other mediators - in online mediation simulations with Skype. VML's underlying idea is quite simple. The more mistakes mediators make (or observe) during mediation simulations, the better - the faster they learn.

Conceived by mediator Giuseppe Leone and sponsored by the Association for Conflict Resolution - Hawaii Chapter, VML started as a pilot project on November 7, 2011 and ended successfully on June 1, 2012.

Results of the Pilot Project Virtual Mediation Lab

Read and and watch the results of the pilot project VML after 50 online mediation simulations with Skype - run with 62 mediators from 22 countries.
