2010 is Good.

Greetings Friends of Emergence
Pictures!
2010 is turning into quite the year for Emergence Pictures and our clients! In just the last month, we have so much to celebrate including:
Beyond these developments, we have continued our work with NAMI Minnesota, HIRED, Aeon, ED Design, LCNA, WellShare International (still picture above from our shoot in December, Dawn Mikkelson & DP Matt Ehling), and the MN Council of Nonprofits, plus developed new connections with the Sundance Family Foundation. More about these projects in future updates!
Overall, this year has been one of both personal and professional growth for me and I am honored to be connected with such amazing clients and colleagues. As time passes, my dedication to telling stories that change the way audiences see the world becomes stronger. I'm continually inspired by those both in front of and behind the lens of the camera; from individuals struggling with mental illness to teenagers starting their own businesses to the amazing organizations that quietly support the work of healing and strengthening our communities.
Thank you all for including me and Emergence Pictures in your stories and storytelling. I look forward to sharing more stories in the months and years to come.
Peace,
Dawn Mikkelson

CRF Wins $500K from Sam's Club!
|
|
This Spring Emergence Pictures joined its client Community Reinvestment Fund, USA (CRF USA) and Haberman in the creation of the official contest video and highlight videos to build support for their campaign to win Sam's Club's Giving Made Simple contest.
On May 4, CRF USA a nonprofit that helps U.S. communities thrive by supporting small businesses and job creation, announced it has won a $500,000 "Giving Made Simple" grant from Sam's Club, a division of Walmart.
Beginning April 8, Sam's Club members and associates voted online for one of eight finalist organizations, including CRF USA. Out of more than 125,000 votes cast as part of the Giving Made Simple campaign, CRF USA received the second-highest vote total in the "entrepreneurship" category to win the half million-dollar prize.
Founded in 1988, CRF USA helps create jobs and business opportunities in low- and middle-income neighborhoods around the country. For the past 22 years, CRF USA and its partners, including local banks, nonprofit organizations and major financial institutions, have helped secure nearly 45,000 American jobs in underserved communities.
The $500,000 Sam's Club grant will help attract other funds to drive an additional $90 million in loans and approximately 4,500 jobs. The impact will reach far beyond the businesses themselves, empowering workers, vendors and neighbors whose lives depend on small business success.
Congratulations CRF USA!!!!

2010 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Filmmaking
|
|
IFP Minnesota and The McKnight Foundation award two $25,000 fellowships to mid-career Minnesota filmmakers each year. This year I am honored to have been selected as one of these lucky folks!
The Fellows are selected by a panel of jurors who are film artists and professionals from outside Minnesota. Jurors look for consistent artistic excellence and merit, clarity and uniqueness of vision, professional quality in the technical aspects of production, and for demonstrable, sustained growth in the artist's career. Additionally, jurors consider the artist's ability to present his/her application for the fellowship in an articulate and professional manner.

Wanna Make Your Own Documentary???
|
|
Join us at IFP Minnesota
This summer I will be teaching two sessions of Documentary Nuts and Bolts at
IFP Minnesota. IFP
Minnesota is the Center for Media Arts that
supports and promotes the work of artists who
create screenplays, film, video, and
photography in the Midwest. From novice to
experienced media artists, IFP MN provides
ongoing programs and services to ensure that
your voice is seen and heard.
The first session (coming up this weekend!) is closed for registration, but there's another one on July 31-Aug 1!
Documentary Nuts & Bolts
How do you make a documentary film, let alone one that people will line up to see (besides your family)? Documentary Nuts & Bolts covers all the basics, plus you'll receive insider tips for creating a compelling documentary. This workshop will cover:
· Getting started even if you don't have funding
· Storytelling techniques
· Identifying documentary styles and developing your own
· Shot lists, b-roll, and "flat art" options
· Strategies for getting a compelling interview
· Hands-on experience with camera and lighting equipment, including a lighting demonstration by cinematographer Jon Springer
· Final Cut Pro editing demonstration
· Research (content, stock music and footage)
· Overcoming the biggest hurdle every project faces (hint: it's not funding!)
· Connecting with the local documentary filmmaking community
If you are new to documentary filmmaking, this is the workshop for you, especially if you plan on submitting a film to the Minnesota Historical Society's 1968 Project documentary film competition (www.1968project.com).
