Use Twitter to Hold a Conversation, Not Sell
|
by Marc Mandt
As a fan of social media and new media, I subscribe to a number of blogs and follow a bunch of people on Twitter so I can learn more. One of the persons that I follow is a guy named Chris Brogan. A few days ago, Chris had a great post regarding social media such as blogging and Twitter titled The Goal is the Interaction. In this post, Chris talks about using tools such as Twitter to encourage interaction with your audience, instead of just promoting your products or services. As I have been studying and working in social media over the last 18 months, I have seen many examples of rookie mistakes. One classic one is getting a Twitter account and then doing nothing on it but promoting your own products or services in a one-way conversation. Long term, this will not work. In the age of Web 2.0, social media, etc. think about how you can have a conversation with your readers. People have grown tired of being told what to do, what to buy, what to think, and so on. Give them a reason to come to your blog or follow you on Twitter by providing relevant information and encouraging interaction. By engaging them in a conversation, you can not only develop a loyal following, but also reach a new group of customers that feel a real connection with your company or brand. Marc
