Boston Globe, New York Times Revenue Plumments 20%+
|
Advertising revenue for the New York Times Co.'s New England Media Group, which includes the Boston Globe and the Worcester Telegram-Gazette, plummeted 23.3 percent in November, reflecting falling demand for print ads from beleaguered retailers.
The media company (NYSE: NYT) said Wednesday the Globe and Telegram-Gazette generated just $25.9 million in ad revenue last month, down from $33.7 million in 2007. Year to date, ad revenue is down 18 percent to $296.1 million from $361 million last year.
In a statement, the company noted retail revenue declined because of lower department store, mass market and fashion/jewelry advertising. National advertising revenue was down due to decreases in automotive, live entertainment, financial services and travel advertising.
Classified advertising also fell due to softness in real estate, automotive and help-wanted advertising.
The New York Times itself did only marginally better, with advertising revenue declines of 21.2 percent, citing similar national advertising concerns.
The singular bright spot for New England Media Group was circulation revenue, which was up an undisclosed amount over 2007. But the figures could reflect additional revenue from newsstand price hikes that went into effect in February.
The Business Journal reported last month that the Globe had told its unions this summer that the paper was losing nearly $1 million a week.
