According to Florida, the world's economy is centered on Mega-Regions and MSAs (versus countries and cities) that have only 17% of the world's population but generate 2/3 of its GDP and nearly 85% of new patents and research findings. Certain regions fit certain life stages. Certain regions are also monsters at attracting the highly productive, highly successful 'creative class' that is driving the modern economy.
 
According to Florida, choosing your city is as important as choosing your career or mate. His advice? Cities have distinct personalities and individuals (as well as companies, no doubt) should use a checklist (provided) to look for a 'match' between their needs and what a region has to offer. Stay in Touch To Stay On Top ....

Is your company the first one that comes to mind when one of your customers or prospects is ready to buy? Will your community make the short list when a business is searching for a site to expand or relocate to in your region?

 
Are you doing enough to keep your organization on the radar of its existing and potential customers? Being Visible gets you on their lists, but Communicating with them is what keeps you there.
 
Stay in touch to stay on top. Communicate regularly with your contacts to create and maintain top-of-mind awareness for your offering. Electronic newsletters that provide relevant, useful information are an effective communicating tool. Use them to stay in touch ...  to teach and to tell ... not to sell.
 
These strategies will also help you stand out in a crowded marketplace:

- Never miss an opportunity to refer business to a customer or prospect. There is no higher compliment that you can give;

- Use 'snail mail' and other low-tech strategies to your advantage. Send hand-written notes that thank or congratulate your best contacts as appropriate;

- When you see a contact mentioned in the news, send them a link to the item or an actual clipping. They will appreciate the attention and consideration;

- Be interested, not just interesting when you talk with people. Be the listener who lets the speaker steal the show -- always.

We all know that it can cost up to 10 times more to go after a new customer than it does to obtain additional business from an existing account. Yet too often we focus on prospecting and selling to strangers, instead of communicating with the people who already know us: our customers and contacts.
