Webmail vs. Outlook - Time to Change?
What are the differences between using
webmail (email accessed via an Internet Browser) and Outlook (email
application)?
Where is your inbox, sent and user created email folders located?
- Webmail: On the Internet Service Provider's mail server.
- Outlook: On your computer.
If your email is on your computer, you can back it up. If it is on a web server, your email probably is not backed up.
Where are your address book (contacts) and appointments (calendar) located?
- Webmail: On the Internet Service Provider's web server.
- Outlook: On your computer.
You're in the same situation as you are with your email.
Will my Smart Phone (iPhone, Blackberry, Palm) synchronize with my email application?
- Webmail: No.
- Outlook: Yes.
If you use Outlook, your backup can restore all your contacts and appointments to your new phone.
Must I use my own computer to access my email?
- Webmail: No.
- Outlook: Yes.
In
general, you must use the computer that Outlook is set up on to access Outlook.
This is not true with webmail. Any computer that can access the Internet can access your webmail since all the email is stored on the Internet Service Provider's mail
server. |
Time to Get Rid of Your AOL Software?
Are you using AOL Software to access your email?
Put
your computer on a diet by getting rid of all the AOL Software. Instead, use an Internet Browser to access your webmail, or receive your AOL
email through an email application such as Microsoft Outlook (part of
the Microsoft Office Suite).
Why get rid of AOL Software? How do you uninstall the AOL Software?
On the Windows Operating System, look for Add/Remove or Programs and Features and select AOL Software. Indicate that you wish to remove the software and you are done.
On an Apple Computer, go the Applications Folder and select the AOL Folder. Drag the folder to the trash can.
