March 25, 2008 Update:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Simple elegance. Perhaps the best way to describe the first AAR Eagle Grand Prix car to carry the powerful Weslake V-12 engine. Chassis 102 brought All American Racers (Anglo American Racers) their first Formula One victory at Brands Hatch on March 12, 1967 - less than a year after the marque's debut race in Belgium - with team leader Dan Gurney at the controls. |
|
Back in the Glory Days, several non-championship Formula One races were held each year, serving as tune-ups for private entrants and factory teams alike. One of the most famous was the Race of Champions, held at Brands Hatch and sponsored by the Daily Mail newspaper. In the 1967 race, Dan Gurney (in Eagle chassis 102) won both 10 lap heats and the 40 lap feature race ahead of Lorenzo Bandini's Scuderia Ferrari entry and the Cooper Maseratis of Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodreguez. Teammate Richie Ginther (in chassis 103's debut) made it an Eagle 1-2 in heat number 2 but dropped back in the final due to brake problems (race research courtesy of John Zimmermann's great book 'Dan Gurney's Eagle Racing Cars' - which just happens to be in-stock at The Motorsport Collector). Carousel 1 has followed up their much sought after 1/18 scale Spa and Nurburgring versions of Chassis 104 - the Titanium Eagle - with this beautifully crafted 1/18 scale replica of 102 in its victorious Brands Hatch Race of Champions livery. Without the vents and louvers incorporated later that season, this Brands Hatch 'snapshot' of the Formula One Eagle is perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing. In stock now. Less than 1000 produced. $159.95 plus shipping. Click HERE to order.
The Brands Hatch Eagle wasn't the only
classic to arrive at TMC
this week:Stunning replicas of the top three finishers in the 1962 24 Hours of LeMans have been released by Redline Models.
A 1/24 scale replica of the 1962 LeMans
winning 4 litre Ferrari
330 LM TRI driven by Phil Hill and Olivier
Gendebien has been
produced by Redline in a Limited Edition
run of
1000 individually numbered models
($195.00).
The second and third
overall (first and second in GT) finishers at
LeMans in 1962 were the
Ferrari 250 GTOs of Jean
Guichet/Pierre Noblet (#19
at right) and
the #22
of Leon Dernier/Jean Blaton ('Beurlys').
These cars have been released by
Redline in 1/43 scale Limited Editions of
500 individually numbered models for just
for $104.95 each. You can check out larger photos on our New Diecast Page or place an order by clicking HERE or on their respective car numbers.
We'll fast-forward 29 years at LeMans for the
latest release from Spark: a 1/43 scale
replica of
the #4
Silk Cut Jaguar XJR 14 in its purple 1991
LeMans livery ($46.95). The #4 car was
assigned to Derek Warwick and Andy Wallace
but used just for testing since the new 3.5
litre Formula One engined cars built
to FIA Group C1 Catagory 1 specs were given
little, if any chance to finish the 24 Hours.
Still, Tom Walkinshaw's Silk Cut Jaguars
would take the 1991 Sportscar World
Championship (and Teo Fabi the Drivers
Championship) with the nimble and quick XJR14.
