Principal's Message

Dear Encinal Families,

A big thank you to the entire Encinal Community for supporting our areyouineagle1 PTO and the Foundation during this year's "Are You In?" campaign. It was wonderful to see the Eagle Pride from students and parents during last Thursday's "Are You In?" Day.

The PTO has been able to reach 94% of their membership dollar goal. So, the great news is that most of the great PTO sponsored programs and activities will continue for this year.

Again, thank you for your ongoing support of Encinal through the time you invest in the classrooms, your involvement in the Encinal community, and your financial contributions.  The teachers, staff, and I will all be working to inspire deeper learning and help every student make significant educational progress this year.

Sincerely,

Principal Burns

JOINT
Thank You for Supporting Our School

A huge THANK YOU from the Encinal PTO and the Foundation to our families and teachers who have come together during the past four weeks to support Encinal. Your donations to the Encinal PTO and the Foundation make a real difference in the education that Encinal provides to our children.

Encinal PTO Update

Here's is where we are: 75% of Encinal families participated and we achieved 94% of our dollar goal to date. We greatly appreciate the generosity of those who gave more than the $200 budgeted per student.  We are approximately $8,000 short of our goal, so we will continue to accept donations to help reach 100% of our dollar goal.  If you haven't had a chance to donate yet, please donate now. This will ensure we can fund all programs the teachers and Principal have planned for this year.  What is next?  Please save the date for the Oct 9, 8:45 a.m. PTO General Meeting in the TERC, where we will vote on the PTO budget for this year.  All members are encouraged to attend!

MPAEF Update
THANK YOU to the many families and teachers who donated or pledged to the Foundation during the joint campaign.  The gifts from 24% of our District families, as well as teachers and community members, total $889,818.  This is a great first step in reaching our goals of meeting the District's $4 million need and raising participation to 80% of District families.

MPAEF 30th logoIf you haven't yet pledged or donated to the Foundation, please join us in supporting Laurel, Encinal, Oak Knoll, and Hillview.  Pledging is a great option for families who want to spread out their giving.  You can enter your donation amount and select a date by which you can fulfill the pledge.  Or you can choose convenient monthly installments. And don't forget about Corporate Matching - local companies like Adobe, Apple, Electronic Arts, and many more can help extend your donation.

Click here to plan your giving today.  If you have any questions, please contact us at any time. We look forward to working with all of our families and teachers to support our schools!

Information to Know

walk
cartoon crossing guard with children
Oct 3 is International Walk to School Day! All schools in the district will be celebrating with parades and music on the way to school and prizes for walkers and bikers as they arrive! If you can't walk all the way to school, pick a spot where you can safely park and walk the last half mile or so. Get some exercise and reduce traffic around school!

Volunteer Opportunity
The Transportation Safety committee is looking for volunteers to lead walking groups, staff prize tables and help promote Walk to School Day.

Want to volunteer?  Questions? Please contact Kathy Schrenk, Transportation Safety Coordinator.

pickupCarpool Reminder for 3rd-5th Grade Parents:

There have been some traffic issues on Encinal Avenue before the 3 p.m. pickup. Due to the volume of cars arriving early, traffic turning left into the school pickup lane backs up onto Encinal Avenue and blocks through traffic.
car red

We ask that you please wait until 3 p.m. to arrive and pick up your child. This way traffic will keep moving and prevent through drivers from attempting unsafe maneuvers to go around waiting cars. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students, parents, staff and neighborhood safe!

Questions? Please contact Kathy Schrenk, Transportation Safety Coordinator.

Encinal Students = Good Composters & Recyclers!

Thank you Eagles for doing an amazing job sorting your lunch waste kidscomposting this year!  Clear waste liners are for compostable pieces such as food scraps and containers from the Hot Lunch program.  Black waste liners are for trash.  We have a blue bin for cardboard lunch containers and a blue bin for plastic water bottles. Discarded water goes into a water can and students recycle the unused water on our plants.  We highly encourage students to take home any uneaten food and/or water so that parents can adjust portion sizes as needed when packing a lunch.

All in all, our students are taking an active role in recycling their lunch waste. Mr. C, our lunch time custodian, is very proud of the kids' efforts!

Kids Art Fundraiser:

It's Kids Art Fundraiser time again! Students are having fun creating beautiful drawings with the help of teachers and parent volunteers, and soon you'll have the opportunity to purchase high-quality items like mugs, water bottles, magnets, ornaments, note cards, tiles, sketchpads, and much more, personalized with your child's artwork. They make wonderful gifts and special keepsakes, and kids love having their artwork immortalized on things that they and their families use every day.

If you'd like to have your Encinal student or sibling(s) create additional artwork at home, just stop by the office and look for the "Extras" folder in the Kids Art bin under the front counter. You'll find paper, instructions, and order forms (each drawing submitted to Original Works must be accompanied by its own order form).

Order packets will be coming home this week and next, so be sure to look for one in your child's green folder. Unless noted otherwise, family orders are due back to school by Monday, October 8.

To see examples of the products available for ordering, go to www.originalworks.com

Thank you for your support of this longtime favorite fundraiser!

Volunteers Needed: Encinal Harvest Festival
Friday, October 5th

coloniallife It's Harvest time again! Encinal School's 3rd annual Harvest Festival will feature Colonial America and the garden of Thomas Jefferson. Each 4th and 5th grade classroom will have about an hour in the garden to visit stations where they can taste food grown in the garden, harvest food and get a taste of daily life in the colonial era.  It's a fun and educational way to get the kids excited about starting the garden curriculum.

Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered to help with the event.  We need a few more volunteers to work a morning (8:30-noon) or afternoon (12:30-3) shift. Volunteers are needed for the Harvest station, Food station, Daily Life station, and Colonial Artifacts station. Please sign-up online through Sign-Up Genius here.

If you are not available to help at the Festival, please consider donating food or equipment.  Volunteers are also needed on Thursday, October 4th, from 11:30 to 1:30 to prep food, and from 3:00 to 4:00 after the festival for clean up.  To get more information or to sign up visit the Sign Up site.
