Information to Know

DevelopmentalAssetsSurveySurvey for 4th & 5th Grade Students: "Me and My World"
from Nicole Scott, School Counselor for Encinal & Oak Knoll

Encinal School and Hillview are partnering with Project Cornerstone, a collaborative of schools and organizations in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, to conduct a survey of our 4th and 5th grade students called "Me and My World." This survey was developed by the Search Institute located in Minneapolis.

The survey will provide our school and community with a wide range of information, such as how students spend their time; their perceptions of school, family and community life; and their participation in thriving behaviors as well as risky behaviors. Most important, the survey will tell us the extent to which our students are experiencing developmental assets.

Developmental assets are the "building blocks" of positive relationships, opportunities, skills and values that children need to grow into healthy, caring, and responsible adults. The survey results will help all of us as we seek to address the developmental needs of our youth. Last year, Project Cornerstone administered a survey to 40,000 students and found that many young people were in need of some basic building blocks for healthy development.

Parents of 4th and 5th graders, you will be getting a permission slip in your student's green homework folders on April 30th to ask permission for your student to take the "Me and My World" survey. In order for your child to participate in the study, we must receive your signed consent. The form on the back of this page allows you to say yes or no to your child's participation. Please give serious consideration to this request. The value of a study of this kind depends upon the participation of every student. If no consent form is received from you, your child cannot participate in the study.

If you have any questions, please email Nicole Scott, School Counselor, or call her at 326-5164 ext. 1903

TShirtsFor5K4th-5th Grade Advisory Project: Walk/Run & T Shirts
from Maggie Sanchez, 4th-5th Grade "Fly Like an Eagle 5K" Advisory

The 4th-5th Grade Advisory program consists of teams of students who pick a theme and work to improve Encinal. Mrs. Sanchez's Advisory team named themselves "Fly Like an Eagle 5K" and are promoting active and healthy lifestyles. The students are organizing a run/walk within the Encinal campus for 4th and 5th grade students during the school day on Tuesday, May 22 after lunch. It is a student project that is not a fund raiser and participation is free.  Interested parents are also welcome.  To participate, please sign and return the permission slip that was sent home with all 4th and 5th grade students.

The "Fly Like an Eagle 5K" Advisory students created a t-shirt, and are selling the t-shirts at cost to anyone who would like one. One of the students designed the t-shirt artwork you see to the right.  If you are interested in having one of the T shirts, please order by this Wednesday, May 1.  If you need another permission slip, click here to download it or to get an order form for a T-shirt.  To order a T-shirt online, click here and scroll to the bottom of the Advisory Page.

Questions? Email Maggie Sanchez, 4th grade teacher and "Fly Like an Eagle" Advisory teacher.
