Encinal After School Program Class Descriptions

 

Chess - Gr. K-5, Thu.- An invaluable educational aide that teaches children analytical skills applicable to many other intellectual pursuits. Classes taught in a fun environment to develop mental skills for students at all levels.  

 

Chorus - Gr. 3-5, Thu.- Learn the basics of singing individually and as part of a vocal group, within a fun learning environment where students will explore the basics of rhythm and melody.  The class uses traditional songs, chants and singing games in a systematic way to teach children the basic building blocks of music:  the ability to hear, to feel and reproduce rhythm and melody, to understand dynamics and tempo, to sing in tune.  Students will begin the basics of reading and writing basic musical notation.     

 

Flag Football - Gr. 2-5, Thu.- Boys and girls will learn the proper fundamentals of Flag Football through drills, skills and games. Students will learn passing, catching, flag pulling and game strategies.      

 

Girls on the Run - Gr. 3-5 girls, Mon. & Wed. - The power of running prepares girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.  Coaches engage the girls in fun games and running-based workouts.  The curriculum covers making healthy choices, the importance of community, media awareness regarding body image, and self-respect.   

 

Hi-Five Sports Club - Gr. 3-5, Wed.- Sports will include football, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, dodgeball, kickball, relay races, golf, volleyball, and more.  Coaches will help the kids learn fundamentals and inspire the kids to fall in love with playing the games, just for the sake of playing the games.      

 

Hip Hop Dance - Gr. K-5, Thu.- Increase your strength, flexibility and self-esteem in fun dance classes with real dance steps, fun and games. Students will be encouraged to do their best - regardless of ability level - and to be proud of themselves and their accomplishments.     

 

Intro to Sports - Gr. K-1, Tue.- Positive coaching in rudimentary movements through all sports such as, baseball, basketball, soccer, football, badminton, volleyball, kickball, etc.      

 

Living Spanish - Gr. K-3, Fri. - Spanish Immersion students will enhance their Spanish language skills and gain confidence by using Spanish through many fun and unique activities as drama workshop, singing, choreography, team games, Spanish cuisine, and more. Native Spanish speaking instructors will teach, participate, and play along with students in each class.  

 

Mad Science - Gr. K-2, Tue.- Fun science that is educational, entertaining with hands-on activities. Exciting, interactive activities instills a clearer understanding of how science affects the world around them. Students will touch, see, hear, smell and taste what science is really all about.    

 

Mandarin Chinese - Gr. K-2, Wed. - Introduction to Mandarin Chinese through a fun, engaging atmosphere of song, games and working together. Students will learn to read simple Chinese characters, build conversational skills and vocabulary and learn Hanyu Pinyin.

 

One-on-One Basketball - Gr. K-2, Fri. & Gr. 3-5, Thu. - A great introduction to basic basketball skills, where student have fun learning how to be a better basketball player in a well organized program.      

 

Pacific Art League - Gr. K-5, Thu. - Paint, draw & sculpt your way through Art History. Paint Claude Monet's water lilies! Discover the wacky art of the Dada Artists. Sculpt a Cezanne Still Life out of paper mache! Learn about Impressionism, Modernism, Pop Art and more! Let's create art!

 

Pre-Engineering with LEGO - Gr. K-2, Thu. - Let your imagination run wild with over 100,000 pieces of LEGOŽ! Build engineer- designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes, and motorized cars. Explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGOŽ building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor.

 

Spanish by Berlitz - Gr. K-2, Tue. & Gr. 3-5, Wed. - Berlitz's proven-effective method of instruction embraces your child in a new language and makes learning fast and easy.

 

ThinkMath - Gr. K-5, Mon. & Fri. - provides extra practice learning math in a fun and challenging way while building confidence. Small groups of 3-6 children are created based on what they know and need to learn next.

 

Wizbots - Gr. 3-5, Tue. & Fri. - uses laptops, LEGO NXT robotics equipment, arts and crafts and unique building supplies to design, build and program robots from their own imagination. Develop team work, increase knowledge of math, science and design; practice brainstorming and critical thinking.

 

Yoga - Gr. K-5, Mon. - while increasing children's flexibility, strength, balance and coordination, as well as concentration and calming one's own body and mind. Yoga is a fun, non-competitive activity that quickly builds self-confidence and self-respect. Classes will provide time for warm-up, yoga poses, games, breathing exercises and relaxation.

 

Young Rembrandts - Gr. K-5, Tue. - art enrichment program that uses a step by step method that assures every student is a creative success.  Uses technical drawing skills; breaks down complex objects to familiar shapes; then use problem solving skills, innovation, and imagination to put them all together into eye-popping masterpieces.
