WOTFActivitiesWeek of the Family at Encinal and Laurel - Jan. 23-27

During the week of January 23, Encinal and Laurel schools will celebrate the Week of the Family to honor the vital role that families play in supporting the growth and education of children.  Traditional homework will not be assigned during this week, although students should continue to engage in nightly reading and fact practice.

Strong family connections along with adequate sleep and abundant opportunities to engage in free play are some of the most critical building blocks for a child's success. This week provides an opportunity for families to enjoy a slower pace in the evenings, reserve some time for simple fun, enjoy a warm meal together or ask our children how they would like to spend this time together.

The PTO has organized an Encinal Family Ice Skate (above, click here), and has also researched some family activities in the community. Click here for our community section for a listing of other activities you might enjoy during Week of the Family.

Su Hong Dining and Su Hong To-Go have generously offered to donate 20% of your bill to the Encinal PTO. Please be sure to mention you are with Encinal. For address, menu and other information, go to www.suhong.com. Gung hay fat choy!
CADVictoriaCultural Arts Day Mon., Jan. 30 - Volunteers Needed Now

We still need many volunteers.  Please volunteer by contacting your HRP or sign up here.  Please sign up right now so we can get you slotted into the right spot for the big event in two weeks.

The excitement is building for Cultural Arts Day on Monday, January 30th. Our African children dancers ("Spirit of Uganda") have arrived in the country. A local Ugandan, Francis, is visiting every classroom this week to play the Adungu, drums, and tube fiddle.  Francis was a performer with the "Spirit of Uganda" when he was younger. Teachers are sharing East African folktales and videos. The 4th and 5th grade students have made paper bead necklaces for the younger classes. All we need are more parent volunteers.

What will happen during Cultural Arts Day 2012?

We have a whole day of events including East African crafts, food, another musical performance by singer/diva Omega, drums, and videos. Please join your Encinal community for a profoundly moving experience that the children will remember for the rest of their lives  -- volunteer (click here).

We need "good clean trash" for a creative student activity

We need egg cartons and "good clean trash." What is "good clean trash?" Nothing sharp, no food, nothing icky, nothing hazardous, no glass. Yes to paper towel rolls, wine corks, washed food packaging, packing material, cardboard, etc. We need a minimum of 8 bags of "good clean trash" and 4 egg cartons for each classroom.  Please turn in to your child's classroom.

"Spirit of Uganda" part of "Empower African Children"
Spirit of UgandaThis tour group of Ugandan children will perform during the morning of Cultural Arts Day.  If you would like to see their full show, you can see them at the Performing Arts Center at Menlo-Atherton High School at 6pm on Sunday, January 29th.  This is a show you don't want miss.  Check out a (boisterous!) preview here. Click here for tickets.

"Young, proud, and marvelously spiritied musicians and dancers. Whatever these performers do, in whatever different bright attire, they do with discipline, fervor, and joy.... The pounding feet and agile bodies, the drums and vibrant human voices all send a message - one of courange and hope."
- Village Voice

"Dynamic dancers and singers galvanize an audience into dancing in its seats" - Financial Times

PerseveranceLife Skill for January: Perseverance
from School Counselor Nicole Scott

Happy New Year! Our January Life Skill is Perseverance. All students will be reading about Michael Jordan.

In K-2 the students will read "Salt in His Shoes". This story was written by Michael Jordan's mom and his sister, Deloris Jordan and Rosyln M. Jordan. The mere mention of the name conjures up visions of basketball played at its absolute best. But as a child, Michael almost gave up on his hoop dreams because he feared he'd never grow tall enough to play the game that would one day make him famous. That's when his mother and father stepped in and shared the invaluable lesson of what really goes into the making of a champion -- patience, determination, and hard work. (Amazon Description)

In 3-5th grades the students will be reading "Jump! From the Life of Michael Jordan" by Floyd Cooper. Michael Jordan was once just an ordinary little boy growing up in a North Carolina suburb, trying to keep up with his older brother Larry. Michael was always good at sports, but it seemed like Larry was always going to be bigger, quicker and luckier. Michael never gave up, and his practicing began to pay off. Then one summer day during a backyard game of one-on-one, Larry Jordan's "little" brother took him--and the whole family--by surprise! (Amazon Description)

Perseverance is about having a growth mindset (I highly recommend "Mindset" by Carol Dweck!). Seeing a challenge and not giving up. Students that have a growth mindset believe that they can learn anything if they work at it. How do you foster this attitude? By praising effort rather than outcomes. When your child brings home an art project, a spelling test, or a written project, praise the work that went into that project, not the results. For example: "I love how you used the different colors to create this picture!" rather than, "This is the best picture I have ever seen!" Don't tell your child, "You are so smart." Say, "You work hard." Smart is something that you do; not something that you are.

Recognizing the People Who Make Encinal Excellent

Welcome back to Kat Wright! Returning to her desk in the Encinal office after family leave, Kat is a familiar face we are all happy to see again! We send thanks to the outgoing temporary replacement, Cecilia Harrison, and hope she enjoys success in the future.

Many thanks to newsletter editor Mary Hower for drafting the newsletter every week. Her creative abilities make it a much better read! (We can carve out a small role for new volunteers - click here.)

Retirements Announced:
Hillview principal Mike Melton has announced that he will retire on June 30 this year, after almost four decades in education. In an email message to parents, Mike said that his years at Hillview were some of the best in his career.

After 36 years as a teacher and administrator, Jo Mitchell, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, has also announced her retirement, effective at the end of this school year.

We wish both Jo and Mike a wonderful, relaxing retirement, and thank them for their many years of service to public education. Stay tuned for news on the district's plans to farewell and honor them both.
