Traffic Safety Update from Vice Principal Joan von der Linden

Welcome back to school, Encinal Eagles! Happy 2012!
Dennis Hatfield, Director of Maintenance and Operations for the Menlo Park City School District, and Lieutenant Joe Wade of the Atherton Police Department met recently to discuss how the City of Atherton and Encinal School can team up to provide additional safety support structures during our high traffic times at Encinal, specifically morning drop off and afternoon dismissal. Beginning the week of January 9th, the Atherton Police Department will assign a traffic officer to Encinal School two mornings and two afternoons per week to help support our ongoing commitment to traffic safety around Encinal during the drop off and pick up hours. We are hopeful this presence will help maintain proper safety practices of drivers, bikers and pedestrians utilizing the roads adjacent to campus.
Along with our collaboration with the Town of Atherton, Encinal School and the Menlo Park City School District are eager to continue to review and improve traffic safety for Encinal as well as all sites. Superintendent Ghysels, Ahmad Sheikholeslami, Dennis Hatfield and I have formed a traffic safety committee and a team of us will be meeting with the City of Menlo Park this week to discuss opportunities for continued improvement. Stay tuned for more information surrounding this.
What Can We Do?
The Encinal Community continuously impresses me with our commitment to traffic safety. Great examples of this commitment include our well developed carpool system designed by the PTO, bike and traffic safety education for students including the Safe Moves Assembly and Fall Bike Rodeo, monthly raffles for students who walk, bike, bus or carpool to school, and the implementation of professional crossing guards before and after school. Great strides have been made, and as we continue to work to improve safety, please strongly consider the following requests to help assist with traffic reduction:
- As the weather begins to change and walking and biking are not always options, consider setting up carpools with families in your neighborhood. Currently, we have an average of 270 cars pulling up to Encinal each morning and each afternoon for a total of 540 car trips.
- Please drop off/pick up your child(ren) in the designated drop off/pick up zone located in front of the school. Drop off and pick up outside this zone is not deemed safe for students and can cause traffic congestion and possible accidents. For example, dropping off students on Middlefield Road both north and south of the school in the morning is not safe due to the amount of school and morning rush time traffic.
- Consider having your child(ren) ride the SamTrans or District school buses to and from school. Information for both of these programs can be found on our District website. Go to http://district.mpcsd.org and scroll down to Encinal School and then go to School Information on the left hand menu. The information will be under Transportation. There are currently spaces available on the K-2 and K-3 District routes as well as the Sam Trans routes.
As we continue to work to improve safety for our school community, we all must do our part. Thank you for making the safety of our students a priority.

Cultural Arts Day Celebrating Eastern Africa - Mon., Jan. 30
This year, Encinal's Cultural Arts Day will explore some of the rich and diverse cultures of the region of East Africa. What can we learn about the people, crafts, dance music and food of the maintains and savannas surrounding Africa's Lake Victoria? There are lots of ways for parents to help the PTO make this a wonderful experience: - Have some East African artifacts we can borrow for the day?
- Want to help on event day 1/30/2012?
- Want to help get everything ready?
We are thrilled that an inspiring children's dancing and drumming group from East Africa, organized by the non-profit Empower African Children, will be performing at Encinal for Cultural Arts Day. If you are interested in seeing one of their full performances with your family, there will a show at the Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 6pm. Tickets are available online, click here. Click here for more details on how you can get involved. Back to Top |

Life Skill for January: Perseverance from School Counselor Nicole Scott
Happy New Year! Our January Life Skill is Perseverance. All students will be reading about Michael Jordan.
In K-2 the students will read "Salt in His Shoes". This story was written by Michael Jordan's mom and his sister, Deloris Jordan and Rosyln M. Jordan. The mere mention of the name conjures up visions of basketball played at its absolute best. But as a child, Michael almost gave up on his hoop dreams because he feared he'd never grow tall enough to play the game that would one day make him famous. That's when his mother and father stepped in and shared the invaluable lesson of what really goes into the making of a champion -- patience, determination, and hard work. (Amazon Description) In 3-5th grades the students will be reading "Jump! From the Life of Michael Jordan" by Floyd Cooper. Michael Jordan was once just an ordinary little boy growing up in a North Carolina suburb, trying to keep up with his older brother Larry. Michael was always good at sports, but it seemed like Larry was always going to be bigger, quicker and luckier. Michael never gave up, and his practicing began to pay off. Then one summer day during a backyard game of one-on-one, Larry Jordan's "little" brother took him--and the whole family--by surprise! (Amazon Description) Perseverance is about having a growth mindset (I highly recommend Mindset by Carol Dweck!). Seeing a challenge and not giving up. Students that have a growth mindset believe that they can learn anything if they work at it. How do you foster this attitude? By praising effort rather than outcomes. When your child brings home an art project, a spelling test, or a written project, praise the work that went into that project, not the results. For example: "I love how you used the different colors to create this picture!" rather than, "This is the best picture I have ever seen!" Don't tell your child, "You are so smart." Say, "You work hard". Smart is something that you do; not something that you are. |

Recognizing the People Who Make Encinal Excellent
The PTO would like to say thanks very much to John Ashfield for leading the Encinal Winter Sing! It was a wonderful seasonal musical happening and everyone emerged with a smile. We would also like to recognize the help of Emily Chiet, the 5th grade team, Allison Liner, Joan von der Linden and Jo Mitchell.
Thanks also to Stephanie Noon our art specialist teacher for letting the kids work on making decorations and thank you to Lauren Calhoon for getting a team together to hang them up. It looked very festive. The kids enjoyed seeing their Winter creations on display!
And finally, all of us would like to thank the generous contributors to the MPAEF for making possible the music program at Encinal and the other three district schools. |

Volunteers & East African Artifacts Needed for Encinal's 4th Annual Cultural Arts Day click here
Encinal School is hosting its fourth Cultural Arts Day featuring East Africa on Monday, January 30th. This is an all-day event organized for the entire school by the PTO and our committee is planning wonderful experiences for everyone. Parent volunteers are needed to prepare and lead the students through various activities. To make this event successful, we need many volunteers who can come for the whole day. There are also roles for part of the day and ahead of time prep. - Have some East African artifacts we can borrow for the day?
- Want to pick out some Kenyan coffee for staff and volunteers?
- Or figure out where to get plantains?
- Or help our children dancers on event day?
- Or eat a roasted grasshopper in front of Encinal students?
Click here to volunteer. We also plan to have two adult volunteers per classroom throughout the day, in addition to the teachers, to lead activities and chaperon the kids to activities outside the classroom. Talk to your HRP to volunteer for this.
