'Right Turn Only' Begins and Upcoming Parent Survey
Dear Encinal Families,
On Monday, our month long "right turn only" pilot began. This "right turn only" plan during drop off and pick up hours aims to create a more efficient traffic flow in order to:
- Improve safety at the Encinal/Middlefield crosswalk for bikers and walkers
- Allow buses to enter the bus zones safely and on time
- Assist parents and students in getting in and out of the Encinal loop in a safe and timely manner
Trained guards are present at the crosswalks. As you approach the crosswalks, please keep the following in mind:
- Guards will cross only groups of people
- Wait for the guard to call your group before crossing
- Cross only in the crosswalk
- Walk bikes across
- Guards do not direct motor vehicle traffic
- Adults serve as important role models for children who are learning how to cross
- Motor vehicles must not block the crosswalk at any time
To support our students in learning skills for bike safety, we will offer a Bike Rodeo at this Friday's Fall Family Picnic. In October, we also will welcome the Safe Moves assembly back to Encinal to review important safety tips for pedestrians and cyclists.
Last spring, the District collaborated with the City of Menlo Park, the Town of Atherton and the Atherton Police Department to conduct a study of the impacts of a "right turn only" plan. Observational data indicated that routing all exiting traffic south on Encinal Avenue could increase efficiency and improve safety for students. During this pilot period, I ask for your patience and cooperation as we assess impacts and attempt to mitigate challenges.

Parent Survey:
During the week of September 26, Encinal School will conduct a parent survey. If you have feedback or questions prior to the survey, please send your thoughts to mot@mpcsd.org and you will receive a response from our team within 24 hours.
