Wednesday May 11 is Flower Day at Encinal Send a flower to school with your student
 On May 11 the PTO is once again organizing Encinal's Flower Day to show appreciation to our teachers. Please send your student to school with one flower to contribute to a bouquet from all the students in class as a gift to their teacher. PTO volunteers will gather every student's flower to create a bouquet and deliver it to the classroom. |
Encinal 2011 Open House in the Evening of Thurs., May 12
 Encinal's 2011 Open House takes place in evening of Thursday May 12. Classrooms for grades K to 3 will welcome parents and families starting at 5:30 and ending at 6:30. Grades 4 to 5 will have their classrooms open from 7pm to 8pm.
Open House is an opportunity to see many of the projects your child has working on during this school year. Please consider walking, biking, or carpooling to this popular event.

Encinal Art Festival During Open House 6pm to 8pm Visit the Art Festival in the multipurpose room
 While you are on campus for your student's Open House, please visit the Encinal Art Festival, featuring the wonderful artwork of all Encinal students. The Art Festival runs from 6pm to 8pm in the multipurpose room.

Classes will run Tues/Fri for both K-2 and 3-5. Registration is open now. More information here. 6-week Golf session starts this Thursday, May 5. Hot Lunch: Order Early for the New Month
Lunch Served Through June 14 from the PTO Hot Lunch Committee
The PTO Hot Lunch Committee would like to remind participating families to order lunch for the new month ahead of time. We have a limited number of "emergency lunches" for children without an order but would hate to run out! Please place online orders 3 days ahead of time.
We are happy to announce that hot lunch will be served on Wednesday, June 14, which is the next to last day of school.

Read-A-Thon Results: $20,000 & 228,014 Reading Minutes Top readers and classrooms announced
 Congratulations and thank you to the Encinal community for overwhelming support of Read-A-Thon! School-wide, students read 228,014 minutes during March! And the fundraising efforts of students and donors got us to our $20,000 goal for the Encinal Library. Good work everyone! Every participant will receive a bookmark.
The classroom with the most reading minutes was: Room 32, Mrs. Getchel's 5th grade class
The classroom with the highest participation rate was: Room 12, Mrs. Sullivan's 1st grade class
Those two classes won pizza parties. Well done!
The student who read the most minutes in each classroom won a gift certificate from Kepler's Books.  Here is a great opportunity to be involved at Encinal next school year! We depend on parent volunteers (like you!) to run all of our amazing PTO programs that support Encinal. We hope you will consider stepping into one of these important committee chair positions. No prior experience is required and training from the outgoing chairs will be provided. Some positions require time on campus and others can be done remotely. Openings include: Staff Appreciation, Business Alliance Coordinators, and After School Programs Coordinators, among others. Volunteer Now for Cultural Arts Day Volunteer now to work beforehand and/or on the day of the event.

Encinal School is hosting its third Cultural Arts Day featuring Polynesian Islands on Friday, June 10th! This is an all day event for the entire school and our committee is planning wonderful experiences for everyone.
A core group of parents is needed throughout the day to help lead the students through the various activities. To make this event successful, we need MANY volunteers who can come for the whole day. Please let us know how you can help!

Giants Game Update Have you heard the Hillview Band? If not, here's your chance as well as seeing the World Champion SF Giants take on the Washington Nationals at AT&T Park. The Hillview Band will be performing the National Anthem on Monday, June 6. All musicians are invited to join the group on the field if you play a band instrument and can memorize your part! If interested in joining us, please contact Mr. Vaughan directly.
Tickets are on sale NOW for the game. For a Ticket & Raffle form, please go to the Band page on the Hillview PTO website located under Academies/Electives. The form can be printed as a pdf. See you at the game!

Kindergarten Playgroup for Incoming Kinders  A small group of parents for 2011-2012 kindergarten students are organizing summer get-togethers. These casual, informal play groups will help families and students get to know one another in advance of starting school. Anyone interested in participating can let the organizers know by joining their Google Group (you can set up a Google account if you don't have one).  The Encinal PTO has assembled information from summer camps that sent announcements for our newsletter. It is on the Encinal web site and you can visit it by clicking here.
Of particular interest to Encinal families is Camp Galileo, which for the first time is on the Encinal campus this summer! Here is some information on that program:
Camp Galileo (Pre-K - rising 5th graders): Campers engage in hands-on art, science and outdoor activities every day, plus have tons of fun with camp traditions like dress up days, water day and the rubber chicken cheer. Visit our web site to learn about our brand-new themes for 2011.
Galileo Summer Quest (rising 5th- 8th graders): Campers try their hand at the things they love, experiencing one Major and two exciting Minors every day during their two-week session, with options like Go-Kart Makers, Fashion Design, Video Game Design and Chefology.
The Tech Summer Camps (4 th-8 th graders): Hands-on science and technology classes for aspiring scientists and engineers at the Tech Museum in San Jose.

5/11: Cub Scout Pack 565 Open House May 11 6:30pm at Laurel Let's launch rockets! Are you and your son looking for a fun activity that strengthens the bonds of family, builds self esteem, forges friendships and reinforces lifelong values? The Cub Scouts offer all this and more! Any boy entering grades 1-5 is invited to join Cub Scouts. Find out more at the Pack 565 Open House and Informational Meeting at 6:30 on Wednesday May 11th in the Laurel Multipurpose Room. We'll have a general information session, slide show, air rocket building, and the opportunity to meet Cub Scout families. 5/11: Registration for Hillview Girls Softball Fall 2011 Attention 5th grade girls: softball at Hillview! Coming Fall 2011, Hillview 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Girls will have the opportunity to play softball for their school. Practice will be every Friday at Nealon Park from the first week of school to mid-October, with games against other local middle schools on week days. Note that the softball season overlaps with the volleyball season. All levels are welcome. Registration opens online on 5/11/11. Email Celine Sanie for more information. Register early, space is limited.
5/11: Kepler's Youth Event with Author Jeanne Birdsall 7pm at Keplers. Author Jeanne Birdsall will discuss and sign her latest book, The Penderwicks at Point Mouette. 5/16: Miss Suzannah, a visitor from the 1850s, is coming to the Menlo Park Library! Monday, May 16 at 7:00PM. Calling all 3rd & 4th graders - Listen to her stories as she recounts her journey by covered wagon from Missouri to California. You'll be amazed by these funny, frightening, and sometimes revolting tales of life on the Overland Trail, in San Francisco in the 1850s, and in the rowdy mining camps of the Gold Rush. Be on Time for the 7:00 pm surprise! The Menlo Park Library is located at 800 Alma Street in Menlo Park. This event is FREE and is made possible by the Friends of the Menlo Park Library.
