The Perfect Gift

Have you ever received, or perhaps given a gift that didn't cost anything at all but that was worth everything in the world? To me, that's what Christmas time is all about and just last year, I received this "perfect" gift myself.

Don't get me wrong, I know that sometimes this time of year can really get to you. The combination of fighting for a parking space, navigating through the huge crowds and then standing in line after line tends to wear a person down and we quickly forget what Christmas is all about. There seems to be no end to the frustrations either as you search store after store for that perfect gift for each person on your list, only to discover that they have been sold out of what you want for weeks. It's easy to allow all of the negative parts of the holiday season to take over.

Last year I searched for the non-existent parking places, trudged through the crowds and stood in forever long lines just like most people did. But, that's not how I remember last Christmas. What I remember is feeling the energy of thousands of people searching for a gift at the same time. I remember the Christmas music and the bold scent of cinnamon and spices in the air. And lets not forget Santa with scores of kids eagerly waiting to tell him what they wanted on Christmas morning.

But, last Christmas was so much more than just the sights and sounds for me. What I remember most is the time spent with someone I love deeply. For me, that made it an incredible Christmas,  just spending time together taking in the sights and sounds. Perhaps that's the idea of Christmas after all. Love. At Christmas, love seems so fitting. It is, after all,  the perfect gift. It costs nothing but it's worth everything.

This year, I hope that you enjoy the music, the scents and even Santa, but most importantly, I hope you give and receive the gift that Christmas is really all about. In fact, I intend to give it again this year and something tells me that I'll be getting it again too!

Survive the Holidays
by Angie Campbell, Fitness Specialist

The Holidays are always a busy time of the year.  We have shopping to do, cards to send, trees to trim, parties to attend and the list goes on.  Without the proper planning, the holiday season can easily become a "fall off the wagon" time of year.  If you have been good this year - eating right and working out - you have an extra incentive to keep your holidays healthy.  Planning ahead for this glorious season and all the many events that come with it can keep those extra seasonal pounds from landing on your hips, or thighs, or belly.

Continue to schedule your workouts and stick to them.  If you don't schedule your workouts into your day then all the extra holiday stuff can find a way to crowd you right out of your cardio time.  Not only planning for the time to workout, but actually planning what your workout will be can be very time efficient.  Just taking the time to jot a few notes in your journal about which muscle groups you will be working and what exercises you want to do can streamline your workout saving precious time for shopping, or wrapping or decorating.

During the holiday season many of us have at least one party to attend.  Again, planning ahead can keep you on track for not adding unwanted "fluffiness".  One way to prepare for holiday gatherings is to calculate your cheat meals in advance so you are "allowed" to indulge on an occasion or two.  Another way to make the most out of your party is to bring some fun healthy party food.  It does exist! Some easy examples would be: shrimp cocktail, fresh fruit tray, lean deli meat tray with olives & pickles, grilled chicken skewers, even a veggie tray with some bright colored bell peppers, celery, carrots, and even jicima.  Below you will see a couple of fancier appetizer recipes you might want to try.

Keep your goals in mind as you enter this busy season.  Plan ahead, workout as scheduled, and eat healthy and you will be one more step closer to a happier, healthier Christmas!

Hormonal Metabolism 101
Wayne Kaya, Lead Trainer
wayne

In the weight room, if you expect to sculpt your muscles into lean, striking pieces of "art," you must meet certain high levels of intensities.  Weightlifting should involve reaching intensities that feel unbearable at some point for each body part.  Doing this entails picking the correct weight settings that will allow you to recruit all of the proper muscle fibers during each set.  How do you know that your weight settings are correct anyway?  Well, a measure of reaching the proper weightlifting strength levels is the intense "burning" sensation that you should experience as you work each body part.  In conjunction with proper cardiovascular exercise and nourishment, the end result for experiencing this burning is a higher metabolism.  In short, your muscles become major fat burning units.  At the microscopic level, how does the burning come about, and how does a great deal of it translate into an equally matched boost in metabolism and, thus, fat burning?

As you lift and lower a dumbbell, for instance, a certain number of times, your muscles are doing work, contracting and relaxing in a constant rhythmic pattern.  At the microscopic level, chemical reactions drive your muscles to do this work.  Under specific conditions of relatively short rests between sets, the reaction waste product lactic acid ("lactate" for you fellow life science people) builds up in your working muscle.  As you probably already know, this is the source of the burning.  After the workout, during your muscle recovery period, your body repairs your muscles, making them stronger.  More significantly, however, regarding metabolism, your muscles adapt to your new level of workout intensity by enhancing levels of certain hormones.  This is key because simply put, the more of these hormones that you have, the higher your metabolism will be.  Consequently, an elevated metabolism means that your body burns a greater degree of fat calories.

Maximally intense muscle burning means a huge boost in your body's ability to burn fat.  To this end, you must strive to choose weight settings that empower you to construct as much of these metabolic hormones as possible.  In other words-and this includes ladies, too-you must feel like you are lifting heavy weights!  If you do not realize this feeling, you must "up" your weight settings at once until you reach maximum burning.  Only then will you chisel your body into the human masterpiece that you seek.

If you yearn for transforming your body in a short matter of weeks, you have got to focus on, among other things, lifting the appropriate amount of weight each time.  If you struggle in choosing the correct weight settings, please seek out the assistance of a trainer.  He or she is capable of helping you arrive at the suitable intensity levels and lending a hand in achieving the body of your dreams.

Time Management Tips
Joseph Scott, GM RLUBS, Inc.

Do you feel that time flies and you can never accomplish all that you need to do? It is said that by managing your time more wisely, you can minimize stress. You probably know that effective time management will help you get more done each day. It has important health benefits, too. By managing your time more wisely, you can minimize stress and improve your quality of life.

I have perused several paper articles and some internet articles to find what I believe to be more practical steps that we all can commit to doing on a regular basis. Try a few of these tips out for a few weeks I bet you will find that you do have more time in a day.

Evaluate how you're spending your time. Keep a diary of everything you do for two days to determine how you're spending your time. Look for time that can be used more wisely. For example, could you take a bus or train to work and use the commute to catch up on reading? If so, you could free up some time to exercise or spend with family or friends.

Prioritize your tasks. Like many people, you may be spending the majority of your time on a small percentage of your tasks. Prioritizing will ensure you spend your time and energy on those that are truly important to you.

Break large tasks into smaller tasks. Work on them a few minutes at a time until you get them all done.

Take the time you need to do a quality job. Doing work right the first time may take more time upfront, but errors usually result in time spent making corrections, which takes more time overall.

Practice the 10-minute rule. Work on a dreaded task for 10 minutes each day. Once you get started, you may find you can finish it.

Get plenty of sleep and exercise. Improved focus and concentration will help improve your efficiency so that you can complete your work in less time.

Take a break when needed. Too much stress can derail your attempts at getting organized. When you need a break, take one. Take a walk. Do some quick stretches at your workstation. Take a day of vacation.

Say no to nonessential tasks. Consider your goals and schedule before agreeing to take on additional work.

Do it now. People will often say "Call me next week, and we'll book an appointment then." Respond by saying, "Let's save ourselves a call and do it now."
