Negotiations

 

If I were to offer you $10 for the shoes you wore today, you would probably smile and say "No thanks." If I upped the offer to say, $200, you might take me up on it. If I offered you $1000 for everything in your freezer right now, you would probably take that too. Perhaps you would accept $30K for your car. On the other hand, you might hold out for say, $100K for it.

My point is that generally speaking, there is a price for everything. There is probably very little that you own that you would not negotiate on. Right?

Now, how about if I offer you $100k for your eyesight? No? Maybe $500K? Still no huh? Maybe you would accept $50K for your ability to walk or talk or hear. No? Goodness, you are so quick to negotiate with me on the things you own but not on your health. Why? Is there any price that you would accept to give up your health?

What you may not realize is that by constantly eating high sugar, high fat foods you are doing just that; negotiating with your health. Over time, high saturated fat foods allow blood lipids to collect in your arteries. High sugar foods begin to tax your pancreatic system ultimately leading to diabetes and perhaps even blindness.

I want you to think about this the next time you are tempted to go overboard with bad food choices. By doing so, you are slowly negotiating away the very health aspects that you just said had no price on them and all it took me was a cookie or a few slices of bacon to get you to the bargaining table.

Don't get me wrong, there is a time and a place for everything and we certainly need to enjoy a good cheat meal every so often. What I am asking you to do is to not enjoy these unhealthy foods all the time. Unfortunately, so many people do negotiate away their health day by day, year after year until it is too late. Blood pressure goes up, heart disease sets in and many other avoidable conditions take over. Just look around you. Most people are losing the battle for their health. Now go look in the mirror. How are you doing?

81 Pounds Lost So Far

Ultimate Body Taco Bowls

8 low carb tortillas

1 lb lean ground beef (Laura's)

1 cup of your favorite salsa

2 cups baby spinach 

1 cup chopped tomatoes
 
1/4 cup low fat cheese

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and while the oven is warming up make sure your flour tortillas are soft (microwave for 30 sec. if needed).  Place each flour tortilla into cups of a medium muffin pan.  This forms the bowl for the taco.  Next fold the edges of the tortillas back allowing room for the fillings and bake for 10 min. Adjust time as needed.

While the flour tortillas are baking brown your lean hamburger meat over medium heat, drain.  Next add your salsa and bring mixture to boil.  Then reduce heat and simmer for 10 min.  Scoop beef mixture into your bowls.

Add your spinach, cheese, and tomatoes.

Yield:  4 servings (2 UB bowls each).

Success Story
 
11 year old Amanda    
 
Being the owner of Ultimate Body Studios, I have to maintain a certain level of knowledge. I constantly read books, magazine articles and gain knowledge about my craft wherever I can. As such, I generally feel like in the studios, I am the teacher and the client is the student. I apply what I know to help the student achieve their goals and in the end, they learn more than they knew in the beginning.
 
Recently, I was asked by one of our former Body Transformers whether or not I could help her daughter lose some weight and get ready for the 6th grade. It seems that this little girl "Amanda" was overweight and had been struggling with a way to lose it. Amanda had tried tennis and some other athletics and sports, but nothing seemed to be a perfect match for her.
 
I agreed to train Amanda over the summer break. Having trained other kids in the past, I felt confident that we could have some level of success with Amanda. Keep in mind that training kids, especially at eleven years old, is no easy task. Their bodies are different, diet concerns are very different and in the end, the training has to be fun. Talk about a challenge!
 
The day Amanda walked into the studio, I was met by a very cute, yet very shy little girl. After talking with her for a few minutes, I started thinking that this might just be a bigger challenge than I had imagined. You see, Amanda was so quiet and so shy that I began to wonder whether I would be able to get any real effort out of her. Weight lifting in a gym with a bunch of adults is tough. How in the world would this quiet, shy little eleven year old make it?
 
Amanda showed up day after day and went through the workouts I had for her. Sessions were spent jumping rope, lifting weights and running on a treadmill. I can't remember a single time that she complained about anything I asked her to do. Then, one day, I needed to incorporate something different into her workouts. My choice was some mixed martial arts and boxing training. What in the world was I thinking? When I asked Amanda's mom about incorporating martial arts in her training, she kind of smiled and gave me a look that seemed to say I would have had better luck trying to get Amanda to dye her hair purple than to do this.
 
At first, Amanda stood kind of awkwardly in from of the 70 pound bag, barely hitting it and usually looking back at me as if she wondered if the last punch was what I wanted. Time after time we repeated this routine. I explained the technique for a punch or a strike and Amanda would reluctantly try it. Each time striking the bag with very little enthusiasm and minimal power or force.
 
Then it happened. Instead of just explaining the technique and slow motion demonstrating it to Amanda, I actually struck full force on the bag with a potent one-two combo. With each strike a loud pop echoed through the gym. Amazingly, as soon as I finished my combo I saw this blur followed by the same exact "pop-pop" sound.
 
In wide eyed amazement I realized that this quiet, demure little eleven year old had just rapped the bag with a stunning one two combo with power and speed that I have not seen in a child. Needless to say, I fired off quite a few more strikes and each time Amanda followed my lead.  
 
Over the course of the following weeks, Amanda's progress with martial arts, weight training and nutrition was amazing to me. Her martial arts skills are beyond those of anyone her age I have ever worked with. I sincerely believe that she has natural talent that isn't seen too often. This little girl was able to drop 24 pounds and more importantly, gain the respect and admiration of the entire class.
 
On her last day, Amanda didn't thank me for helping her lose weight. She didn't thank me for helping her develop martial arts skills. Instead, Amanda made a point to come up to me and say "Thank you for being my trainer." I found myself standing there once again in amazement at this incredible little girl. For the first time in my career as a trainer, someone thanked me for being me, not for what she got from the training but quite literally for being me, a trainer,or, more specifically, her trainer.
 
Congratulations Amanda and thank you. Thank you for teaching this "teacher" that success is available to anyone who is willing to work for it. Thank you for trusting me to help you accomplish your goals and for following my instructions every day without complaint. It was a true joy to have you to train and you made my summer one to remember!

His name is Dennis Sheldon and he comes to us with years of experience in owning several large Health Clubs and more recently a trio of tanning salons known as The Sun Shops. My Experience as a UB Trainer

A weightlifting, cardio and abs trainer, a food advisor, a very firm yet fair authoritarian, a friendly facilitator and motivator, a salesperson and a maintenance person, a UB group trainer must play many different roles.  In addition, throw into the mix upwards of 250 different body-transformer personalities and physical abilities along with intricate group dynamics for each class, and a UB instructor has a demanding task to accomplish everyday; he or she must keep everyone safe, happy and on track toward his or her goals in an environment that is similar to a boot camp.  This can be a daunting position for people fresh out of trainer school; it is simply not as easy as it looks.  This month, without trying to be egocentric, I decided to share what my experience as a trainer has been at UB.
 
Back in December 2005, when I saw a job ad on Monster.com asking for a trainer for the old Frisco facility, I applied for it online.  Since I was not having any interview call backs on the other jobs for which I had applied, I did not think that I had much of a chance of being interviewed, so I really was not expecting a response from the UB owner.  As an Aubrey resident, I had never heard of Ultimate Body Transformations.  When I showed up for the interview on a Saturday morning, I couldn't believe how small and cramped the old Frisco location was.  It was the size of a small office space.  In fact, it was probably half the size of the current Frisco gym weight room and about one-fourth the size of the Plano gym.  As I walked toward the front door of the old place, I seriously doubted that it was actually the right address.  I literally stood just outside of the front doorway, saw "Ron Lyons Ultimate Body Transformations" on the front window, read the address, which obviously matched the one in the ad, but since the place was so small, I furrowed my eyebrows for what seemed to be the longest time, thinking that the whole asking-for-a-new-trainer ad must have been some kind of joke...
 
I hope that you found what you needed here. If you are ready to change your life, I will do everything within my power to help you achieve that change. It all starts with believing in the impossible then taking that first step. But, it's not over once you achieve it. When you have made it, you still have one thing to do. Enjoy it!
