I hope that you are
well on
your way to living a healthy, fit and happy
life. January
always
brings many new faces to the Ultimate
Body Studios
and this January was no different. If you are
one of the
newbies that have started my program,
congratulations. I hope that you find your
Ultimate
Body experience is truly life changing and
one that you will never
forget. You can count on your
transformation to be tough and at times, it
will push you to the edge. But, I know that in
the end, you will be very pleased with the
results and the new life you will have.
If you are one of my former Body
Transformers, I
would like to say thank you for using
Ultimate Body to
change your life. There are so many of you
that are
living proof to the rest of the world that
seemingly impossible things can be
accomplished, if you want it badly enough.
I appreciate you and your hard work
very much! You who have graduated
always tell me that it is the Ultimate Body
program which is responsible for your
changes, but the reality is that you are the
one who should get credit for your
transformation. You found this
program, joined it, made the time to show
up for classes and saw it through to it's
end. I consider it my honor to have had you
in my
program. You see, I realize that there are
hundreds of programs
and trainers out there, but you chose mine
and I am forever grateful for that.
Please help us by passing this newsletter
on to at
least one other
person and remember that a new cycle of
the
Ultimate Body Transformation starts
Monday January 29th. If you are interested
in joining us, please call us asap. The
longer you delay, the longer it takes to
realize your dreams.
We will discuss so many things this month
from breaking through fitness plateaus to
taking steps to change many aspects of
your life. Joseph gives us some of his
sage advice and there is some new
information about Ultimate Fit Club and a
Business Networking Coffee we are
having. To top it all off, there is even a
Super Bowl watching party planned. Enjoy!

| Breaking Through Fitness Plateaus |
 |
|
Over the last year, I have been approached
at times by UB members inquiring as to
why
they have not been losing any more scale
pounds beyond what they lost during the
initial months in the program. These
people claim to do everything that they are
supposed to do; they attend every class,
exercise to the best of their abilities, and
eat very healthy, so why, they ask, are they
gridlocked in this unwanted temporary
weight-maintenance mode, or "plateau,"
for several days or sometimes weeks? In
other words, since they have been
successful up to a point in losing fat using
a certain way, why doesn’t it work
anymore?
Note that fat loss occurs only when you
expend more calories than you consume,
creating a caloric deficit. Gaining fat
involves expending less calories than you
consume, and finally, burning and eating
equal caloric amounts create a constant
state of dynamic equilibrium, neither
gaining nor losing fat. Furthermore, your
body constantly strives to burn the least
amount of calories to accomplish a task,
making the body an extremely energy-
efficient organism. With this in mind, when
you start an intense exercise program,
since you are unaccustomed to using
muscles in the ways required, you must
expend a tremendous caloric amount to
accomplish tasks. In other words, because
your muscles have not adapted to handle
the new workload yet, you have to expend
a greater amount of energy, or calories, to
exercise.
During this initial workout phase, or
adaptation phase, your body works
inefficiently, burning more calories than
consumed, engendering fat loss. As time
elapses, your body, still striving to adapt
but at a progressively slower rate, expends
less and less calories than used initially.
This continues until your body finally
realizes a plateau state, meaning you have
completely adapted to your new exercise
and eating lifestyles. In this state, your
body expends the least amount of calories,
becoming very energy saving and,
therefore, losing the desired caloric deficit
needed to lose fat. Considering this, how
do you maintain a caloric deficit, staying
ahead of your body’s ability to adapt to its
new exercise workload so that you can
continue toward your fat-loss goal?
Understand that one of the quickest ways
to reach a fitness plateau is to exercise the
same number of times per week with the
same intensity for the same length of time
each time, doing the same kind of
exercises in the same order. On the other
hand, I have had and continue to have
great success in keeping clients in a
constant state of adaptation and, hence,
fat loss, using the FITT principle. "FITT"
stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time and
Type. This is a powerful way to avoid
plateaus by increasing caloric expenditure
beyond caloric consumption. The following
expounds on each of these acute variables:
Frequency
This refers to how often you exercise in a
given time period. If your goal is fat loss,
work out more often.
Intensity
This involves how hard your cardiovascular
system works. Remember that
cardiovascular work enlists two systems:
your heart and lungs. If your goal is fat loss,
raise your cardio demands by exercising
more vigorously within reason.
Time
This is associated with how long you
exercise. Simply extending your workout
times translates into increasing your
caloric expenditure.
Type
As an example, if your body is conditioned
to stationary cycling, try a different exercise
mode, like stair climbing, swimming, fast
walking, jogging, aerobic-kickboxing, or
high-intensity stepping. Another way to
shatter a plateau is employing interval
training, alternating between states of very
high and very low cardio intensities. Stated
differently, shock your body into getting it to
adapt to a new way of using its muscles at
the appropriate intensity levels.
The key to overcoming a plateau is being
consistent in your efforts to break it.
Sometimes, having a lock on your
progress and not understanding why can
discourage you from believing that you can
beat it. Never accept that you cannot lose
anymore fat. In fact, there is no limit to fat
loss; you can lose so much fat that you can
die of having too little of it in your body!
Therefore, please seek the advice of a
fitness or healthcare professional when
choosing your fat-loss goals. Remember
that there is a new cycle of Ultimate Body
starting January 29th. Contact us today so
that we can help you get started on your
new body!

| The Art of Life by Joseph Scott |
 |
|
A lot of people have asked why my articles
are named the “The Art of Life.” The art of
life in my opinion is having the ability to
accept life for what it is and live it. The art
of life is the ability to adapt to whatever
happens to you and to maintain your
peace. It is appreciating the small, tiny
things in life and not taking anything for
granted.
I think the art of life is the balance between
living life TO THE FULLEST, and living life
ACCORDING TO STANDARDS--yours
and the environment you live in. It's full of
contrasts that way.
The Art of Life is to be able to enter this
world and touch the lives of others. I also
believe that it is to become a role model,
someone who others can learn from,
someone who can sets the example to live
by. Be faithful to your church and let God
use your hands to do the work that the Lord
gives you. Find joy in working with others.
Help others believe in themselves and give
hope to those who feel a heavy burden. Lift
up others even when you are feeling down
and never let others lose hope when they
need encouragement. Be that beacon of
light that shines in the darkness, someone
that people can go to when they're lost or
need help.
This is the Art of Life!

Don't Settle |
|
|
|
It seems to me that many people tend to
live their life in a manner that leads them to
general unhappiness and a feeling of
being unfulfilled. There are others,
however, that have decided to take charge
of their life and make it into something
special, something that gives them years
of happiness and a real, honest sense of
fulfillment.
Sadly, many people tend to settle for
what
they "have" instead of working for what
they "could have." This is the part that I
struggle with. It seems so very clear to me
that
one of the greatest abilities we have as
human beings is that of "choice." We can
choose to have our life on our terms or to
settle and live on someone elses. I try to
live life my way and have for years,
although I am still a work in progress. I first
started
doing this when I noticed that so many
people around me were living a life where
something was obviously missing. These
people
made it by day to day, never really
reaching
for what they could have had. I personally
decided to never live like that and for the
most part, I don't. There are areas of my
life that I am still working on, but within
time, I will also accomplish those as well.
If we have a zest for life, we should live
that
life to our fullest. That means living happy
and fulfilled. If there is some area in your
life that is keeping you from being as
happy as you could be, then perhaps it is
time to change.
I know, it's not that easy, right? Wrong. The
most difficult thing we can do is to "settle"
with
our
current situation and live our life at a level
less than our greatest potential. By doing
this and being unhappy, we
effect those around us, particularly our
kids. Perhaps it
is time for you to evaluate your own life.
How is your job, your home life, your body?
Is it time for change?
After being completely honest with
yourself, determine what changes you want
to make and simply get started making
them. Will it be hard to do? Yes. Will it
be a struggle? You can count on it. But will
it be worth it in
the end? Absolutely, Yes!. Welcome to life.
It is what
you choose to make of it, be that good or
bad.
If you are sick of your job, start taking steps
to change it. If your home life is not what
you want it to be, get out of unfulfilling
relationships. If you want a different body
and a better level of personal health,
change it. It's all up to you! Sure, all of
these types of
changes are challenging, but all of them
are worth it once they are made. It is up to
you,
settle for "unfulfilled and unhappy" or
decide today to change
and live a better life, very happy and very
fulfilled!
Ultimate Body can help with the
physical changes and physical changes
can help you gain the confidence you need
to make other changes. Contact us if you
are ready to take the first step. Don't find
yourself five years from now sitting on your
couch, watching a re-run of Grey's
Anatomy feeling unhappy and unfulfilled
and regretting not taking action when
the time was right.
"Destiny is a matter of choice, not of
chance. It is a thing to be achieved, not
waited for." W. J. Bryan
