It's Not Too Late For A Great Summer!
Featured in "All About Frisco" June, 2006
Did you notice that everyone was starring at you
when you were at the pool last weekend? How do
you like those comments you keep getting from your
friends? You know, the ones that keep telling you
how hot you look with your new body? School is out
and life is great right? You started a great fitness
program back in January just for this time of year and
that you have succeeded in reaching your goals. Am
I right? No, you say. Then, I have to ask, why not?
Surely, you remember having all those great
intentions. Do you remember that special set of goals
you had? This time, unlike all the other times, you
were going to reach those goals. Then life happened.
That which started out as an idea of getting fit soon
degraded into a few efforts at eating right and
exercising. Maybe you even bought a new piece of
equipment or joined a gym.
Regardless of how far you went, chances are, you did
not go far enough. Therefore, here you are facing
time at the pool and the kids are home from school,
which means that there is more bad food choices
that can be made now. Realize, not only are there
bad food choices available to you, but to your
children as well.
It appears that some of us may be in a bit of a
predicament. You did not reach your goals to get
more fit by summer and now that the kiddos are out
of school, they are sure to eat as most kids do and
end up going back to school larger than they should,
or at the very least, less healthy.
It might surprise you to know that I would disagree
that all is lost just yet. The truth of the matter is
that you really can still have a great, fit summer. On
top of that, you can help your children learn some
great eating and fitness habits that will be very
beneficial for them as they go through life. What a
great opportunity!
Start by making a pact with the family that this
summer is going to be different. Agree that this year,
there will be less fast food and more wholesome,
healthy choices made. It is important to get
everyone onboard for this effort, as each person will
need the support of the other family members to
make this effort a success and without a doubt, kids
will rely on their parents for support. It is important
not to let them down.
Whether you have kids or not, the next step is to
find some type of fitness program to embark on.
There are so many options available in Frisco. We
have more gyms now than we ever have from the big
ones to the smaller personal training studios like
mine. There are even several places to go to
purchase home workout equipment if that is your
desire. What is important is finding something that
suits you and will provide the results you want.
If you do have children, consider making fitness a
daily part of their life too. Anything from dedicating
special "walking" time through your neighborhood to
riding bikes together and everything in between are
great options. Remember too that there is a real need
to instill healthy eating habits in your kids while they
are young.
I personally believe that it is important to carefully
consider what you are feeding not only yourself, but
your kids as well. A diet of hamburgers, chicken
nuggets and soft drinks will only create problems for
them when they get older. Many books and other
resources are available on the subject of nutrition
and you can find helpful information on the Internet
as well. Learn what you can and make the right
choices.
My fastest growing concern is trying to pull kids (and
some adults) away from the current trend in gaming.
With all of the advances in current computer and
video technology, the appeal of sitting in front of a
screen and playing games all day is very appealing to
kids. Unfortunately, one of the leading contributors to
failing health is a sedentary lifestyle and the
improvements in gaming are not helping in that area.
Remember, it is not just kids who sit in front of a
screen playing games all day; adults can be just as
sedentary by watching TV or spending too much time
sitting around as well. It is critically important that
this summer we all get up, get out and get involved.
By limiting time in front of a screen, playing games
and sitting around, we are taking steps towards great
health. Add to that a serious effort at eating healthy
and you have a winning combination. Try to get the
whole family involved. The payoff is worth the effort.
The next cycle of the Body Transformation
program is Monday, June 19th. Contact us now to
get started.
June 21st is the first official day of summer. You still
have time to make this a great and healthy summer.
Moreover, with a little effort, you can help make this
a great, healthy summer for all of your family as well.
Who knows, the trend you start may just carry on
past this summer and into you and your
children's future. See ya at the pool!
