Average Technician wage
Managers must understand the work mix of your
shop. This ratio is important when placing a
development plan. Let’s say your shop has a work mix
of 60% repairs and 40% maintenance. To maximize
gross profit as a percentage of sales the Technician
skill levels will match the work mix. Why pay a high
skilled Technician large dollar amount to perform
maintenance sold at the desk? When your shop
matches technician staffing to work load your
average technician wage will drop increasing the
company’s gross profit.

Greetings!
Finding high skilled Technicians is challenging today
and will be even more so in the future. Many
managers feel they need only high skilled Technicians
and never bother developing people. This makes it
easy for management in day to day operations yet
carries a huge cost for the dealership. Let’s look at
ways to manage the Technician shortage and at the
same time improve gross profit.

Looking for Technicians to develop

Finding low to mid skill Technicians can be a real
challenge. A few places to look are Midas muffler, and
independent repair shops. Quick lubes and local
college programs are a few other sources to review.
Finding these technicians with the needed tools is
next to impossible. I have used tool truck venders to
finance these technicians with payroll deductions to
get them set up properly. Just be sure the Technician
signs an authorization for the deduction.

Individual Training plans

Every Technician needs to be involved with
management to develop a training plan to develop
the needed courses to completion. It is best to
complete courses by category and have the vision for
the end result. Plan your transmission Technician of
the future and train them with the same vision.
Develop staff before the need and your shop will
benefit from your efforts now and in the future.
