Williston Road Complete Street is Permanent!
On August 20, the South Burlington City Council took the courageous step of unanimously approving the 3-lane complete street design for a 1.5 mile stretch of Williston Road!
After a two-month trial on Williston Road between Hinesburg Road and Kennedy Drive, South Burlington residents, the Public Works Director and the City Council all praised the process and collectively took a bold step forward -- not only to make this complete street trial permanent -- but the Council also voted to extend the complete street eastward to near Earl's Cyclery!
Former South Burlington City Councilor Meaghan Emery, who had previously expressed concern about the complete street demonstration, said it well. Read more ...

VT Crushes Other States in the Bike Challenge!
This summer, 1,277 Vermont cyclists signed up to log the times they biked as well as their distance to create a friendly competition encouraging all of us to bike more. The VT contingent pedaled 415,020 miles -- enough to circle the earth over 16 times! This motivated and diverse mix of mountain bikers, roadies, commuters and kids absolutely stunned the rest of the country by trouncing other better known cycling states. Our decisive first place finish in the National Bike Challenge earns us some serious bragging rights: While we competed in this national contest, simultaneously Local Motion, Earl's Cyclery, Sojourn Bicycle Tours, and the VT Bike/Pedestrian Coalition hosted a statewide Vermont Bike Challenge so that bike riders of all stripes had a more local and inspiring way to compete -- for themselves, their team, their employer and their community. Find out what Kiel Alarcon, AllEarth Renewables, and the University of Vermont have in common! Read more ...

VTrans Preserves Rec Path Funding
While the new MAP-21 federal transportation bill allowed states to opt out of funding walking, biking and trails, Governor Shumlin and VTrans have committed to maintaining funding for Vermont's Rec Trails Program.
This is a critcal funding source for improvements to trails managed by the State, towns, and non-profits across the state. Many advocacy organizations around the country have had to mobilize their members to save walk/bike funding. In Vermont, it was much easier. Read more ...

Of Riding and Reveries
by Peter Burns
When I ride, many different things flow through my mind. Sometimes a song fragment goes round and round in my head: "Got a wife in Chino babe and one in Cherokee. First one says she's got my child but it don't look like me."
On a ride that makes me happy, I sing "I am the light of this world, as long as I am in this world, I am the light of this world." That is something Jesus says in the bible as well as a song by Little Feat.
Some rides are devoted to thinking about a problem. Read more ...
