Do you want the causeway repaired? Do you want the Bike Ferry back? We're 80% there, but now we need your help!
This past Saturday, June 30th, the Town of Colchester and Local Motion announced The Big Fix -- a fundraising campaign to repair eroded sections of the Island Line, and to relaunch expanded Bike Ferry service. Our fundraising goal is $1.5M -- of which we've already raised $1.2M! Now, we need your help to raise the final $285,000.

Heads Up: Police are Stepping Up Walk/Bike Enforcement If you operate on the assumption that the rules of the road only apply if you're behind the wheel: Beware!
Over the next couple of months, the Burlington Police and other area police departments will be stepping up enforcement of all traffic laws for walkers and bicyclists who aren't riding by the rules.
If you're on your bike, you could get a ticket if you:
- Go through a red light or stop sign
- Travel the wrong way on a one-way street
- Ride at night without lights (front & back)
- Fail to yield to a pedestrian
If you're walking, you could get a ticket if you:
- Cross against the light
- Cross through traffic mid-block
The police are also stepping up enforcement for motorists, with a focus on dangerous behaviors such as speeding, running red lights, and failing to yield to bicyclists. Read more ...

Summer Bike Club @ Bike Recycle Vermont
Bike Recycle Vermont is hitting the road for a summer of fun-filled riding!
Thanks to generous funding from the Vermont Community Foundation -- and in collaboration with Diversity Rocks, a Burlington-area youth group for New Americans -- BRV is happy to announce its first-ever summer bike club.
The club comprises 15 members and convenes every other Monday to explore the greater Burlington area by bicycle. Each Bike Club member has access to a refurbished bike, helmet and lock, which they may keep following full participation in the summer-long bike club. Read more ...

Snow in Summer? Only at Local Motion!
Glorious sunshine, with a nice breeze, greeted the first attendees of our Family Fun Challenge Ride. We converged at the picnic table outside Local Motion to introduce ourselves. A few participants decorated their helmets or bikes with stickers while we waited to begin.
Once we set up, we immediately detoured due to unforeseen circumstances -- but it was an adventurous group. We rode single-track back to the path, and the clue sheets came out! Read more ...

How to Get to Montreal in 3 Days: Notes from a Bike Ride
by Robbie Stanley
Earlier this summer, I participated in Local Motion's VerMontreal Tour. I started cycling a few years ago and have enjoyed riding around Charlotte, but this was my first tour. In the cold, dark days of winter, I signed up for the more strenuous four-day tour option with an old friend, Lea Coggio, who has cycled extensively for years. We began the ride on a beautiful morning on May 31 at Snow Farm Vineyard in South Hero and from there rode on back roads through the Champlain Islands, crossed the border at Alburgh and stopped at St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, for the first night. The second day took us to Granby and the third to Montreal. What follows is adapted from notes I made at the end of days 2-4. Read more ... |
Statewide Bike Map Available - for FREE!
Thanks to many hours of hard work by volunteer project coordinator Lou Bresee, graphic design skills contributed by students from Champlain College, and the cooperation of the state's Department of Tourism & Marketing, a long-awaited statewide bicycle map is now reality!
The map, entitled "Vermont Bikeways: The Vermont State Roads & Trails Bike Map," is available for free.
You can download an electronic version of the map, and you can order bulk printed copies by emailling Greg Gerdel.
The Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition, who coordinated this massive project, invites your feedback on this first-edition map. After reviewing the map, you may record your usage notes and feedback here -- and your suggestions will help shape the next edition.

The Richness of Multi-Modal Travel
by Peter Burns
In June, I taught a Vermont Humanities class at a prison in Rutland. Instead of driving, I took the bus from Burlington to Middlebury, rode my bike from Middlebury to Rutland, then rode back to Middlebury where I caught the Burlington bus. The journey took me though a variety of physical and mental landscapes. Read more ...
