Gain More Confidence on Your Bike

Become a more confident bicyclist -- whether on city streets or the rural roads of Vermont! Traffic Skills 101 -- taught by David Jacobowitz and Robert Schermer --  will teach you the solid basics that will keep you comfortable on the road: bike maintenance; cycling equipment and clothing; avoiding crashes and hazards; and riding etiquette and enjoyment.

The four-part class begins on Tuesday evening, May 1st at South Burlington High School, for ages 14 and above. Read more ...

We're excited to launch our 2012 Travel Talk Series with a presentation by Paul
Demers -- an active Pedals for Progress participant and avid bicycle traveler.

Paul will take us on a 1000km tour of the mountains and beaches of northern Chile. The event -- which is free and open to the public -- will be held at Maglianero on Thursday, April 12th at 5:30. Come join us!

Bike Round-Up at EMS Club Days

Attention all bike-wranglers: Bike Recycle Vermont needs your help!

On Friday, April 13th and Saturday, April 14th, we'll be rounding up bikes at EMS Club Days, in support of our low-cost bike program.  If you have an unused bike to donate, you can bring it to the EMS Dorset Street location - where we'll round it up for refurbishing and redistrubution to low- and no-income Vermonters. The record lake flooding of 2011 caused extensive damage to the Burlington Bike Path, the Colchester Causeway Park and the Allen Point Access Area in South Hero.  Since then, trail managers have been working hard to repair and reopen the 13-mile trail -- something that's near and dear to our hearts.

In partnership with Local Motion and other stakeholders, these trail managers have set up Friends of the Island Line Trail to coordinate private fundraising, public education and planning activities.

During the 2012 season, sections of the Island Line Trail will be closed for repairs. Read more for details on closures...

Walk & Roll to School on May 2nd!

Join us in celebrating Vermont's inaugural Walk and Roll to School Day! This day -- which complements International Walk to School Day, held
ever y October -- is a great way to encourage positive changes in community culture, and to create environments that are more inviting for everyone, young and old.

Families, this is a great way to support your children in becoming more active; and helping their school to encourage walking and biking.

Schools, click here to participate in this fun event.

Parents, DPW team up for kids' safety

Dismayed by recent - and frightening - accidents at the corner of North Union and Pearl Streets in Burlington, parent Meghan O'Rourke decided to act.

Despite the axoim that "you can't fight City Hall," Meghan found nothing but cooperative spirit when she approached Burlington's Department of Public Works with a special request. Read more ...

2012 Walk/Bike Summit a Success!

On Saturday, March 31, we had the pleasure of co-hosting the 2012 Walk/Bike Summit with the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC).

From all accounts, the event was a successful one, with approximately 120 attendees on a warm, sunny spring morning.

Jeff Olson, from Alta Planning + Design -- a premier bicycle/pedestrian planning and engineering firm -- was an excellent keynote speaker who warmed to local issues and his audiences beautifully. We also had the pleasure of  hosting Kartik Sribarra, from Rails to Trails Conservancy, who presented a workshop about funding and politics at the national level. Read more...

FAHC Seeks Input on Community Health

One of the many reasons we advocate for better walking and biking facilities is because of the positive effects they have on personal and public health -- something Fletcher Allen and other community health partners are also concerned about.

To that end, Fletcher Allen is conducting a Community Health Assessment -- and this is your chance to share your thoughts. Participating in this survey should only take 10 minutes, and is much appreciated!
