What's with all the purple? No, the Companion wasn't overtaken by a purple people-eater of the one-eyed and one-horned variety.  Instead, the season of Lent will soon be upon us, and . . . you guessed it . . . purple 'tis the color of the season.  Read on to learn more about opportunities to deepen your relationship with Christ this Lent.

Ash Wednesday Services

This Wednesday, February 22nd is Ash Wednesday, a day that marks the beginning of Lent.  It is a day fasting and abstaining from meat in the Catholic Church and also includes the tradition of receving ashes on one's forehead.  There will be three masses in the Mabee Chapel on Ash Wednesday:

4:30pm

10:10pm

The Miller Service Scholarship provides an opportunity to do service for five weeks over summer break and, in return, to receive a scholarship that would be added to your financial aid package. You can do the service in your hometown or wherever you will be during break.  For more information or an application contact Maureen Henderson at (816) 501-4869. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 23.

Is your Rosary Broken?

SFX Parisonher, Mr. Bob Cuttingham, has generously offered his services to repair broken rosaries.  In return, he simply asks for your prayers, not monetary compensation.

If you have a broken rosary, place it in an envelope marked with your name and phone number, and drop it off at the St. Francis Xavier parish rectory.

The More You Know . . .

In developing countries, sweatshops subject their workers to poor working conditions, long hours, and extremely low wages. On the other hand, buying "sweat free" clothing allows workers to join unions, enforce their own rights, and earn a living wage. Supporting sweat free labor provides workers with the rights they deserve and hope for a better future.

Alta Gracia is a new brand of t-shirts and other apparel that is sold primarily on college campuses. This company pays workers a living wage - one that is enough to provide adequate food, clean water, clothing, shelter, health and child care, and education - for them and their family. Contrary to popular belief, Alta Gracia clothing does not cost more than the apparel already sold in college bookstores. The Rockhurst bookstore is a proud supporter of the extraordinary work that Alta Gracia is doing, and currently sells a variety of their products.
